Still one of the best comedic dialogue scenes in any movie. It makes no sense, characters interrupt each other all the time, but yet it flows so seamlessly.
John Goodman demonstrates such great acting skills here. You see him take in the verbal noise and regain himself, keep his aggression under control, fail at it, etc… so good.
Like another poster said - A whole stretch of time grinds to a hilarious halt just so the point can eventually be made after much confusion. It's a feeling.
I was thinking the same thing. This scene would be so frustrating in the hands of lesser talent - both the actors and the Coen brothers absolutely nail this scene in a way that few others could.
The funny thing is the Chinese actually refer to them self in a literal translation as a man or women from China we also refer to many other people this way Englishman Frenchman etc but PC says its wrong
It's such genius writing. Donny is confused and behind for the entire movie just because he was bowling in this scene and missed the exposition. I love it so much.
You could know nothing about this film and hear a character like Walter use the term "preferred nomenclature" and instantly know it's a Coen Brothers film. Love their dialogue. It really ties their films together.
0:00-1:18 . A minute and 18 seconds where the movie grinds to a halt; no plot, no exposition, Just pure character and it’s 3 of the best film characters ever.
This is the scene that blows the "Donnie was a figment of Walter's imagination" conspiracy out of the water. The answers Donnie's question, twice. "My rug."
Who the hell thinks that? I realize a lot gets read into this movie (I have a copy of the Abide Guide), but that's a really weird thing for some people to think.
I remember hearing that theory, and then I watched the movie for the first time two weeks ago. When I got to this scene all I could think is “Wow people are dumb”
The dialogue is so well constructed, Donnie struggling to get the full picture, Walter hatching a plan while getting frustrated with Donnie, and the Dude tying it all together... Like the rug.
this is one of those sequences of dialogue that by the end almost no new information has been introduced and any screenwriter will tell you how that's a cardinal sin but somehow the fluff is the comedic element and adds something in itself
Erm, this scene is where the Dude decides he should go to confront the big Lebowski. We also learn the correct nomenclature for an Asian-American, and we realize that Donny is out of his element.
"The Big Lebowski" is almost entirely a character-driven movie. The plot is a farce--totally unimportant. The only thing that matters is these little character moments.
As many times, as I’ve seen this movie and quoted almost daily, I just realized that later on in the movie, Walter wanders into the theater during dudes landlord‘s dance recital. So many reoccurring jokes, and phrases in this movie such a classic. Used the “not the preferred nomenclature” line in a high school science presentation 12 years ago and only my friends were dying laughing. This movie is the master class of comedy period.
The fact that Walter tells the dude not to use the term “Chinaman” and then a minute later uses it himself cracks me up. Every time I watch this movie there are new things that jump out at me
Donny you're out of your element! I tell my son this when he wanders in on a true crime story at the end and has no clue what's going on. Then he will try to ask 500 questions.
This dialogue is so perfect that everybody is quoting different lines in the comments and they are all gold. And perfectly delivered by 3 masters. I wonder how the Coens felt filming exactly this scene.
For some reason, the very last reiteration by Walter is one of my favorite lines in the entire movie. It kind of puts the nail in the coffin as to the events that spiral out of control throughout the rest of the movie
Here you have a Vietnam Vet who has probably killed a "Chinaman" or two, yet he takes the time to point out to the Dude the "preferred nomenclature" to show how he's up to date with the times. Classic. LOL.
This scene really ties the film together

It's an amazing scene--very chaotic. The conversation veers wildly all over the place.
This scene being immediately followed with Big Lebowski saying “some chinaman took my legs in Korea” is hilarious
Well, China was also in the Korean war (on North Korea's side, obviously), so it was not like he was being obtuse or incorrect about the nationality.
@@leenpels7646 it’s their funny dialogue about how chinaman is an offensive term and his use of it that makes it funny

The person who took his legs in Vietnam wouldn’t be Asian American. He would have been a man born in China.
"I didn't blame anyone for the loss of my legs. Some CHINAMAN took them from me in Korea."
