  • In this video Im on the Big Island of Hawaii and I take you scrambling through the tide pools and jetties to pick a delicious Hawaiian treat-Opihi, or the Hawaiian limpet.
    I cook them up in 3 different ways right there on the beach, and my dad joins in for a taste test.
    Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy this little taste of Hawaii.

    While not as large, we have some pretty good limpets on the mainland too. I have eaten them raw right off the rocks and they are delicious! Your dad's reaction said it all.

      I figured the mainland has to have some decent ones! I will definitely give them a go if I come across them!

    I am glad to find this video, jealous watching you guys eating Opihi. I live on Oahu, never eat Opihi long time. In 1976, I went on a military mission on Kahoolawe, got plenty Opihi all over, I guess because not too many people go there. The waters around Kahoolawe is so clear and abundant with plenty fish, lobsters and dolphins.

    • @BackcountryWahine
      @BackcountryWahine  2 роки тому

      Wow youve been to Kahoolawe?! What a treat! Im sure its amazing there!
      And Im from Oahu too so I feel the same! I hadnt had it in so long! Or I guess you can always go Tamashiro if you like shell out one arm and one leg 😆 Mahalo for watching and commenting!

      @@BackcountryWahine Nice to hear from you. Yes, I was on Kahoolawe one day, we had orders to pick up Walter Ritte and others (trespassing). Kahoolawe is so beautiful because not trampled on by man Got plenty Opihi (big kind), water clear with curious dolphin, and lots of fish and lobster. My mouth was watering watching your father eat raw. And no, I not going pay arm and a leg for frozen Opihi from Tamashiro's. I like your videos, take care and be safe.

    Love the video 🤙🏾 one thing I recommend is using a super thick butter knife and when you put the butter knife you kinda gotta be fast like if you surprise the opihi before it starts to stick down most times it’s almost effortless but anyway you get em

      I've used butter knife, spoon, another opihi, any kine works just the speed is key. Push em in fast pop em off...also better no show your spot so doesn't get hammered unless get regulators down there.

    • @BackcountryWahine

      They only took a few mins. You can tell theyre done because they release from the shell. And honestly you cant go wrong if you eat them a little raw as well.

I bought these at Tokunagas in Hilo, also Nankos in Kaneohe (one of my fave places) has them too..but I dont think either has them online..But like is said, I think youll find them just doing a search. Girl...let me teach u how to get em. First u do better with a more rigid butter knife. Wrap the handle with cloth and black tape so it's easy to hold. Always use gloves especially with the scraper u used it'll cut u hands up. Next is dont touch the opihi, just cover over it and with one quick motion slide the butter knife and pop it off. It'll be much easier if u don't touch the opihi and not allow it to clamp down to the rock. Lastly carry a small bag so u can free up your hands to catch yourself from slippin..safe holoholo chik! That scraper is no good. Use a butter knife or grind down a 1inch putty knife, you can slip it under da opihi and cover with other hand, no more flying opihi. No cut hand
