- In this video Im on the Big Island of Hawaii and I take you scrambling through the tide pools and jetties to pick a delicious Hawaiian treat-Opihi, or the Hawaiian limpet.
I cook them up in 3 different ways right there on the beach, and my dad joins in for a taste test.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy this little taste of Hawaii.
This was such a fun video! loving these Hawaii expeditions... and Gary!
thank you so much! its been really nice being able to share my Hawaii adventures with everyone. Im so glad youve enjoyed them! and thanks for your support as always 😊
While not as large, we have some pretty good limpets on the mainland too. I have eaten them raw right off the rocks and they are delicious! Your dad's reaction said it all.
I figured the mainland has to have some decent ones! I will definitely give them a go if I come across them!
Ok, so that was freakin cute as hell seeing you and your dad together! And wait, did he say two ladies in their 70’s were trying to hit on him and pick him up, hahaha classic!🤣🤣🤣 OMG, this was a blast to watch! Thanks again Lei!
Yuuup got that all 100 percent right! Lol Papa Gary is a gem and a natural on camera!
hahaha thank you! and the best part is my dad is older than those two ladies! 😆

another fun and interesting video!
thank you!! 😄
I am glad to find this video, jealous watching you guys eating Opihi. I live on Oahu, never eat Opihi long time. In 1976, I went on a military mission on Kahoolawe, got plenty Opihi all over, I guess because not too many people go there. The waters around Kahoolawe is so clear and abundant with plenty fish, lobsters and dolphins.
Wow youve been to Kahoolawe?! What a treat! Im sure its amazing there!
And Im from Oahu too so I feel the same! I hadnt had it in so long! Or I guess you can always go Tamashiro if you like shell out one arm and one leg 😆 Mahalo for watching and commenting!
@@BackcountryWahine Nice to hear from you. Yes, I was on Kahoolawe one day, we had orders to pick up Walter Ritte and others (trespassing). Kahoolawe is so beautiful because not trampled on by man Got plenty Opihi (big kind), water clear with curious dolphin, and lots of fish and lobster. My mouth was watering watching your father eat raw. And no, I not going pay arm and a leg for frozen Opihi from Tamashiro's. I like your videos, take care and be safe.
@@jtabarejo oh wow thats crazy! Thats gotta be an interesting story!
Also yeah I never like pay either thats why I never eat um long time🤣
And thank you so much. 💜🤙
Rajah dat! No face da okole to da ocean when picking opihi. 🤙
you know I was singing kaau crater boys in my head the whole time too 😆
Nice day at the point 👍🏼
it was!
Whoa sistah, go get em ah!?!
Cooking the bait! Awwwriright!!
🤣 might as well!
Thank you for sharing the experience :)
thanks Bob! hope you are well!!
Gout action. Cool video
thank you!
Yes sir that Laupahoehoe point my country I miss that place
Hahaha your pops! The opihi looks mayjah!
tanks ah! 🤙
Love the video 🤙🏾 one thing I recommend is using a super thick butter knife and when you put the butter knife you kinda gotta be fast like if you surprise the opihi before it starts to stick down most times it’s almost effortless but anyway you get em
haha omg I realized that while doing it but shoot I drop so many in the water! 😆
And I saw one unko down there using a paint key, but thick butter knife? never wouldve thought! Next time I going try! Thanks for the tips! 😊and thank you for watching!!
I've used butter knife, spoon, another opihi, any kine works just the speed is key. Push em in fast pop em off...also better no show your spot so doesn't get hammered unless get regulators down there.
Chee unko is HILARIOUS!!! More of your dad making these please.
@@CLee-qh3er Yeah I was starting to catch on at the end..haha kinda late but next time hopefully Ill be better!
And yeah, I try to never say where Im at unless its something super well known. I only like to leave little bread crumbs that way people who are really interested can put in work and find it 😜
and lol about my dad...he does love the camera 🤣 He'll be back thats for sure!
Try not to touch it before you pick it, it’ll come off easier if you catch um by surprise. 1 motion. Good stuff!
Vitamin sea 🤙💪
How long do you cook them?
They only took a few mins. You can tell theyre done because they release from the shell. And honestly you cant go wrong if you eat them a little raw as well.
Thanks for watching!😊
What kinda shoes do you have on?
I always called them ninja turtle shoes lol (they used to mostly come in green back in the day too) but theyre japanese style tabis that they sell in most fishing stores in hawaii. Theyre the best for the reef!
Can you please post a link where I can buy those reef shoes?
@@VCheckItOut Hey so if you look up Hawaiian Tabi you should be able to find them. I bought these at Tokunagas in Hilo, also Nankos in Kaneohe (one of my fave places) has them too..but I dont think either has them online..But like is said, I think youll find them just doing a search. Hope that helps!
The first Opihi I harvested, had a worm in it, Kona-side. I wish I knew more about the parasites.
oh yikes! good thing you noticed them!
Can parasites be killed by cooking?
Girl...let me teach u how to get em. First u do better with a more rigid butter knife. Wrap the handle with cloth and black tape so it's easy to hold. Always use gloves especially with the scraper u used it'll cut u hands up. Next is dont touch the opihi, just cover over it and with one quick motion slide the butter knife and pop it off. It'll be much easier if u don't touch the opihi and not allow it to clamp down to the rock. Lastly carry a small bag so u can free up your hands to catch yourself from slippin..safe holoholo chik! Alohaz
I love da tips!! Mahalos! Everybody sayin butter knife! My dad gave me the palate knife ha so I blame him lol..next time I go try. 😛🤙 Tanks ah!
Love da you tube hustle...alohaz
@@kealiih6215 mahalos! did it to stay busy during covid. Its been fun!
You using the wrong tool!! Thin steel butterknife the best!!
rajah! someone else said that too..next time next time.
I hope you have the soil and chili pepper water and if you like you can run wasabi but now I heard they're going to stop picking opie's and I think that's a bunch of crap oh well
oh man that would be so sad! But I guess plenty places no more now thats why..lose money. 😔
why no gloves tita? xo tutu
Idk lol..never even thought about it actually🤣 maybe next time 😜
@@BackcountryWahine
I go with ya anyX ♡tutu♡Lindsey
@@acertiger591 Ooh yeah! Right on! 💜
Put knife under shell before you touch it
That scraper is no good. Use a butter knife or grind down a 1inch putty knife, you can slip it under da opihi and cover with other hand, no more flying opihi. No cut hand
right on! Good tips! Thank you!
