Basically Disney wants to prove that they're "all grown up" and can "appeal to all ages" by distancing themselves from a medium that is most often seen as kid stuff. Whether or not this actually proves their maturity is... obvious.
I think a significant portion of upper management at Disney hates and/or is embarrassed by their own company and its history. Look at how many animators have left to go work for other studios, or the Imagineers like Joe Rodhe who left because they can't make the projects they want to. If anyone should be CEO it's someone like Joe or Tony Baxter who truly love the artistry of Disney.
Well, considering that most of Disney's current animation problems were caused by officials for the company who straight up admitted that they think animation is for kids (including one who must not be named) and Disney has Bob Iger back in the chair....

@Lauren Gibbs maybe ashamed is a better word, but there is some kind of attitude in the executive offices that doesn't want to acknowledge anything that came before them. Not the artists, or the Imagineers, and definitely not Walt himself. I think they are truly deluded enough to actually think their reboots and remakes are going to make people forget about what came before, because they are living in an insular bubble filled with asshole "yes men" whose job it is to make sure they're tuned into the weirdo "activists" on Twitter, because they have zero confidence in the people who actually get their hands dirty like Joe Rodhe. Who left after decades in the Imagineering department because they don't like the old guard who remember when it was a quality company to work for.
It's honestly sad to see how nearly everyone's childhood company making banger animated movies turned into this, a greedy money obsessed company milking classics for soulless live action remakes
Its giving me the idea of a project of my shows movie having mickey mouse be abusive, greedy and ruthless rather than happy and friendly. This would of course foreshadow the entire thing. What do you think?

The irony that the three live-action Disney Princesses came onstage at last year's Oscars and gave one of the most outrageous speeches to anyone who love and care about animation. (Sausage Party exists, just saying.) Relieved Del Toro had to remind the Academy that "Animation is Cinema" a year later after his version of Pinocchio won.

I don't think it's because animation is more expensive, I think that live action it's just quicker. With animation you have to create absolutely everything out of nothing but with live-action you mostly just have to edit and add a little bit of cgi.
Lazy either way. You see 2D animation movies (or even original 3D animations) take years to make and Disney pumps out copy paste without any freshness to it.
I wouldn't mind what kind of movies Disney is making as long as they are good. There are some animated films I wish they could reboot to make them better: The Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet, Oliver and Company, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and so on. There's a giant gold mine right under Disney's feet, but they just don't give a crap to dig it out. Speaking of live action movies, they haven't finish the Narnia series yet!

The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots the Last Wish are cheaper than a lot of animated movies before, yet they look great. Also, those ''live-action'' movies are as expensive if not more than animated films. Also, I put live-action in '' '' because non of those remakes would exist without CGI. Disney just can't manage their money because for so long no matter what they would make it would earn huge amounts of money. And instead of changing their practices, they will fire people who aren't even responsible for the problems.
As someone who loves animation, I remember I used to look up to Disney. I loved so much of their work and it's just depressing to see what they've become. There has been some modern movies of theirs that I did like such as Cruella and Turning Red, but I'm just tired of the live-action remake schtick. I still love their old material but I wish they would take this time as an opportunity to experiment within animation instead of rehashing their classics.
In a nutshell: Disney is losing its identity. They are investing way too much money and resources on flat live action aimed to minimize their own history, their own solid and still adored tradition with the animation medium. They want to completely cancel Pixar as a studio and make it part of the Borg Hive. I truly hope that Little Mermaid LA will bomb at the box office. Money loss is the only reason Disney will understand to stop carrying on this disrepesctful operation. I am glad that Dreamworks came out with two gems such as Bad Guys and Puss in Boots 2. it shows that someone can appreciate animation and innovate it without losing their identity.

My husband wants to see Little Mermaid when it comes out. He hasn't seen some of the videos I've seen about it. Disney is dead to me because of their lack of creative minds and patience to put out quality. They look at what happened to work in the past, turn it into a formula, and think by duplicating the formula, they can get a great story.😢

It’s depressing, especially when lots of people who learned to animate, they did it for the sake of Disney only to find out they don’t need animators like that anymore. I once knew someone who wanted to work for them so it’s even more depressing.
Growing up in the 90s, I was astounded and in awe with what Animation could do in movies and short cartoon films. Everyone putting in such hard work to bring characters to life and creating a morale story I'll remember for the rest of my life. Were the movies 'Historically, Politically, or Culturally Accurate'? Probably not, but it never mattered to me because I related best to the CHARACTERS in the story! Ariel, Mulan, Belle, Jasmine, Kida and even Tiana all inspired me to be a better person! I have grown up to see 'The Jungle Book' in both Animation AND Live Action, each having their own twists to a story about a young boy who is raised by wolves and yet befriends a panther and a bear, going on a journey of realizing who you are while trying to avoid a tiger seeking revenge on ANY and ALL humankind! And if one should look, that some stories have been done to death. Animation may be difficult, but it DOES give people the ability to push boundaries thst live-actors and CGI puppets cannot. Take a look at Hayao Miyuzaki's work! All of that, came from a man's imagination with real-life experiences to make it believable and yet so out of this world! He finds inspiration from other cultures and adds tidbits of it in there. In Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Disney actually DID THE WORK into creating the Atlantean language long before James Cameron created his world of Avatar! In Avatar: The Last Airbender, they created a whole, new world based off of several different cultures with a magic that's 'NOT magic but an ancient art of culture!' Out of Martial Art styles! How cool is that? Even The Dark Crystal tv series made CGI work with a movie of voice actors and puppetry, because they stuck with the ORIGINAL storyline, and put a twist of a setting in the past! They can make great stories again (Disney), they just have to Create an idea, and DO THE WORK!
Now that I’ve taken a couple of religion classes, I can’t believe that avatar the last Airbender used the concept of the avatar correctly, and simultaneously uses some Buddhist practices. it’s amazing what you realize later on.

I feel terrible about missing out on "Treasure Planet" in the theater. When I saw the trailer as a teen, I could only think of how stupid it was to have pirate ships, complete with sails, in space and nobody wore spacesuits! Then around a decade (or so) ago I watched a UA-camr gush over it, and blind bought it on Blu-ray. I thought that "Titan A.E." was beautiful, but this movie made it look like it was drawn in crayon! It's definitely one of my favorites. In case you can't tell, I am a HUGE FAN of animation. From weekday afternoon and Saturday morning cartoons to big screen adaptations, I just love the artistry of hand drawn animation. I loved the rough sketches in the lines of the characters in the old movies like "The Sword in the Stone" and "The Secret of NIMH"; and when they added CG to enhance the environment like in "The Rescuers Down Under" and "Beauty and the Beast", I was just too excited where it all seemed to be headed! Then, after "The Princess and the Frog" failed, it went 100% CG, and I was so disappointed. And then they started remaking their classics into live action (or more realistic) movies and I was actually offended because it seems like they're saying "all that was just for the kids", and I'm fuming, "Like Hell they are!" >:^(
Not sure if Princess And The Frog failed Michael but similar to Fantastic Mr Fox in 2009, I think the film became overshadowed by Twilight New Moon at the box office

Appeal to the lowest common denominator and you'll make a lot of money, but do something interesting, thoughtful, and/or original and there's a huge chance that it'll fail. Y'know, "The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "The Shawshank Redemption", both "Blade Runner" films, and many more fantastic movies were all box office failures. Even the Coen Brothers never made a profit on any of their films until "True Grit".
It's not that "The Princess and the Frog" failed. For once, Disney BAAARELY, and I do mean BARELY promoted this movie. They didn't even tried. Had it not been that I was big fan of classic animation, I wouldn't have gotten to buy dvd to watch it. It was so poorly promoted that I forgot to go to cinema to see it. And after entire work was done, Dinsney PLANNED, pre-production of movie basically, to lay off their old classic animation staff. So they didn't wanted big time for this movie to succeed, to not draw attention on them basically beheading studios that made them who they are. They wanted them gone. I really enjoyed Princess and the Frog, and it's infuriating that Disney just casually wants everyone to forget it. They have no faith in animation as medium, people in charge of it think very little about children or adults who grew up on classics. They just chase trends. And no, I am not person who is upset new Ariel is played by black actress. I am more facepalming myself because Disney in it's stupidity forgot WHY classics were animated in first place. They. made. MUSICALS !!! You don't have to be an Einstein to know that musicals are quite known from issues of performance vs visuals. Just look at opera's. They deliver splendid performance for songs .. but characters are most likely being oversized aged Juliet (who was supposed to be skinny teen) singing to very old Romeo. And Disney can pretend all they like how they aren't Hollywood of old, but .. yeah "The Princess and the Frog" treatment as whole rears up old ugly wrinkled racist mouse head again. They only did that movie to casually shut up audiences about why we never got african princess, before shutting down classic animation for good. Disney doesn't deserve that movie.
The real shame of it is that they often seem like they don't respect their audience as much as they used to because "cartoons are for kids". The biggest bone I have to pick with them right now is about The Owl House. I got into it recently because I heard good, unprompted reviews from a couple of youtubers I watch (all of whom are adults) and because my brother (also an adult) had seen it and recommended it. If I remember hearing correctly, they had cancelled season 3, but because of the huge cliffhanger at the end of season 2, were allowed a three 45 min episodes to finish the story. Rumor was it was because of the LGBTQ+ rep, but Disney felt that The Owl House did not fit their ideal brand (kid focused cartoon series). In other words, it was attracting too mature an audience. I get the feeling that this view against animation is partly why all the "live action" remakes and why anime is popular. Japan doesn't seem to have this view, which is why they have kids' shows like Pokemon, more emotionally mature shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, and well written (if a bit adult) comedies like Konnosuba. What American companies won't provide, people have and will find elsewhere.

And I don't just mean that they view animation as something only for kids, but rather they don't look and respect animation itself like that do in Japan with anime. For them, animation is a medium which has allowed them to showcase any kid of story you can dream of.
Ironically, Scuttle as a gannet is the only character from The Little Mermaid remake that looks both genuinely interesting and funny because (1) gannets are rarely seen outside of popular culture besides documentaries, and (2) she makes me genuinely want to laugh more than the new version of Sebastian. Other than that, I 100% agree with you. Disney needs to broaden their horizon and return to 2-D animation. 🤦♂️🎨🎞

Animation's a storytelling medium that can pull in both adults AND their kids -- guaranteeing more ticket sales! I loved Atlantis, but it's sad that it didn't even allow the princess in that movie to become a Disney Princess. It's like Disney *was* actively sabotaging the transition period animation movies for their Live Action Remakes. Treasure Planet & Atlantis had the same treatment.
Home on the Range is ridiculously underrated. The animation was SO good. I'm still freaking BITTER about Disney closing down its big screen 2D studios. That had been my dream as a child and welp. I can never forget how disheartened Hans Bacher was when he gave a talk at my school. A student asked what kind of advice he would give to an animation student who wanted to get into Disney and all he said was "Don't." Such a blunt guy. Back then, I may have winced but he was right. Disney just went downhill from there.
I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or not, but the recent movies Disney have been putting out are missing that magic that is so characteristic of their earlier films. I wish they would return to 2D animation, give us an original story or at least a fairytale (what they’ve usually been good at), and for once give us an actual villain that’s terrifying. The last good villain we had was Mother Gothel in Tangled, but that was almost 13 years ago!

I just watched treasure planet with my 8 year old nephew. He has never seen it and he got teary eyed during it and at the end said it was one of his favorites. We also watched Brother Bear right after and he loved that one too. Those films don't get enough credit.
I wonder if there is some ongoing conflicts behind the scenes with Disney and the animation guild. Could be this is there way of intimidating animators so they'll except poor working conditions (like they did for "live action" lion king) and scraps for pay. Just speculating here but the company does have a very long history of coming into major conflicts and being abusive towards creative teams.
If Walt Disney came back alive and saw what Disney had become, he would be very disappointed as they are literally going against everything he believed in when it comes to animation.
I remember watching a documentary years ago about Walt Disney and it always astounded me how much he and his company fought to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarves as spectacular as it was against so many obstacles. It makes me so sad to see the same company make these new movies that don’t have nearly as much love or care put into them despite now being one of the biggest companies in the world.
Dreamworks and Disney is the biggest controversy of animation these days. Let's just make it short and sweet. Dreamworks has a long way to go to be considered good as Disney (although Dreamworks destroyed Disney 2022). Disney hasn't failed yet, they have tons of life still. Hopefully Disney won't destroy there reputation more than they all ready have.
I honest to god HATE this entire stupid "Disney VS DreamWorks" debate. Netflix had TWO animated films(Pinocchio and The Sea Beast) nominated and one of them has been getting awards left and right. And, that doesn't account for how many other films they had like The House(rated PG-13) and My Father's Dragon that were both snubbed. And, if anyone brings up how Netflix cancels their projects, one, every studio does that, live action gets the same treat, and three, no one had that excuse before all this. When Disney had Raya, Netflix had Over The Moon. When DreamWorks had Boss Baby 2, Netflix had The Mitchell's VS the Machines. When DreamWorks had Dragons 3, Netflix had Klaus. Netflix had the best year.

I'd rank a whole lot of them on a tier list. So when you think about it. Netflix has been making solid movies ever since Covid! They've had a good 2020-2022 so far. I'd like to mention after The Lion King released ,a lot of these remakes have not been as successful as of late, and most have just generally bombed or failed in streaming numbers. Things may finally be changing.
I think a big reason they use CGI for animals in the live action remakes is down to animal wellbeing. Disney came under major fire for Snow Buddies because some of the dogs died during production. That's why they sometimes look different in certain scenes, they got replacement dogs. Since then Disney has been hesitant on paying for a highly experienced animal expert and real animals, when they can just underpay their CG animation team to muster up an uncanny monstrosity
2D animation will never die off. In fact, in recent years, it has only gotten more popular than CGI animation. There is a way to save Disney, but it requires patience and determination to take back the magic of the company. I hope I can succeed in the end.
disney's problem isn't just that they're remaking all animated movies into live action, it's also that they're not bringing anything new at this point. no new story, no new style, no new technology, when so much of their history hinged on that. they're no longer trying to bring artistry and wonder. they're just trying to make money, and nothing else matters but money. it's just sad. they could've been so much better if they went back to their roots but this is what we get instead. time to wait for the next cartoon saloon and studio laika works, i guess.
They constantly use the “Incredibles” type of look with different characters. Their older stuff use to look different based on the theme of the movie. Even the characters personalities are all the same. Very awkward and helpless, that don’t really experience much throughout the movie.
Treasure Planet was all but designed to appeal to young boys and Milennial young men. It seems like princess-obsessed Disney couldn't handle that. Possibly the same with Atlantis.
It also came out around the same time as Titan A.E. and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, and I think all 3 got lumped together by critics (who were definitely not the target audience)
I do really think the problem with current Disney is too much control by people who have no idea what the creative process entails. Walt Disney is always shown at the work floor with his fellow staff. He seemed to me to be a man who wanted to show the world what he and his team were capable of. He laid everything on the line for some of his films. Do you think current Disney would risk that? They're far too greedy and creatively bankrupt to even attempt that. They like things being easy. If things get hard they would rather scrap it than continue and push on. CG is their preferred choice because it is slightly easier to handle. The computer handles a lot of the hard back breaking details. They don't need to worry about shadows as you set up a light and fiddle with details. They can move it around the scene. They can alter things easier. Live action is also always going to look worse as when they film for live actions they have no idea what the CG is going to look like so they have to fudge it and hope the VFX artists can deal with it. On the bright side Japan is carrying on Disney's legend. They were partly inspired by Disney during that time and have set up an entire sub industry that rivals Disney. They're also willing to take risks they take new series from up and rising stars and bring their stories to life through 2D animation. Some succeed and others fail. I don't think any sensible author would currently be willing to entrust their life work to Disney. Animation requires a director and other heads to know everything single detail for every single frame. They should have control of their grand vision for the project but Disney doesn't allow that. Only their vision is allowed. They prefer being safe to putting hard effort into a project.
I keep on forgetting the lady and the tramp remake exists. I keep on seeing it and thinking "maybe I should watch it with my friend to make fun of it" but then again it looks so boring we'd probably either turn it off or just share memes instead, and then i forget it exists once more. It also speaks volumes of what a wet fart it was considering i've seen 0 videos talking about it.
Surely there’s a decent amount of videos discussing the remake but Lady And The Tramp is just fine for a Disney animation original even if it’s biggest contribution to pop culture is the spaghetti strand to mouth kiss being referenced again and again. Of course you describing it as boring doesn’t seem far off since any video using clips of it reminds me it’s probably focusing a lot more on humans

Without 2D animation, Disney would not be where it is right now and no matter how you slice it, it cannot be denied. They weren't and AREN'T just some steps they can just not use anymore
I grew up in 90s and i love disney movies and man when treasure planet came out i blame their marketing its such good movie hated it flopped :( It saddens me how disney has fallen over the years the only thing I'm excited for is Wish but I hope the villain isnt sympathic but can't trust them these days. Dreamworks at least doing better with their movies im looking forward to more of the movies.
I always think it’s funny that a lot of companies such as Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, and Universal would treat animation as inferior and is willing to discard it and then praise their live action movies and blockbusters, but the thing is, most of them if not all of them uses CGI, which is a form of animation. Marvel, Star Wars, DC, Disney live action remakes, Avatar, Jurassic World, Transformers, and Fast and the Furious all use CGI to make their films look as realistic as possible.
This is nonsense. I *love* most Disney animation, especially the vibrant look of their big-screen films, and it is not wise to abandon it just to chase down a narrow path of modern audiences who dismiss animation as for kids, or raunchy and over-the-top when it is for adults. I need to get Disney animation back on track, with some help from Matt Braly and Domee Shi! It is our Hero's Duty.
You say 'modern audience' but it's hardly the truth. This schpill 'animation is for kids' has been a stupidity preached at the very least since 80-ties. I heard it my whole life. Disney chases people who never cared for Disney and never will. Back in the day Disney wasn't interested in chasing people who thought this little of animation. Disney lost sense of who they are.
I believe Disney is a bit embarrassed of its animation past. They've also lost that innovation drive that used to drive them when Walt Disney himself was at the helm
Walt Disney said, "If you can dream it, you can do it, and don't let anybody say you can't." This is my biggest dream goal of bringing the 2-D animated style from Disney once again, and I'll save Hollywood for stopping all this ridiculous madness.
Pirates of The Caribbean did really really well when it started and that proved that there was an audience for darker live action movies like that. Of course the series of films eventually fell off, I'd say by Pirates 4 and 5 after the original trilogy was over. That was when Disney shifted focus to buying pre-existing IPs like Marvel and Star Wars. Add that to all the attention that Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings got as well as Marvel and Star Wars before the Disney buyouts. Disney saw profits in audiences shifting towards live action films which is crazy because before that, making anything live action if it wasn't live action before was considered a sin. It rarely worked if at all. Then the MCU was a huge success. Older audiences were going to see them in massive numbers. Some grew up on Marvel, but most of them didn't . Many of them watched classic animated Disney films when they were little. Nostalgia. Pure profit, right? Not all animated films can work in live action though, especially when you change it too much. That kind of goes against the original vision of the film. As for going CG, it's just as expensive since it takes tons of people to make just as 2D animated films did before, but requires less resources. So they shut down animation studios they were no longer using, many of which were used in the prime of the Disney Renaissance. I have seen a surge of classic animations on UA-cam lately though by new people with new ideas and a lot of passion for Disney's classic animated films. That gives me genuine hope even if Disney never hires them. Someone else will.
Disney wanted to make a new live action franchise like prince of Persia Sorcerer's Apprentice john carter the Muppets tron legacy the lone ranger tomorrowland the nutcracker but they all failed financialy and this is where marvel lucasfilm 20th century fox and the remakes comes
Even with Pirates Disney didn't knew what to do. If you compare first movie vs sequels in writing .. it's clear misdirection. The sequels become more wacky, writing became way more shallow and as did the characters. In first movie Jack Sparrow was definately guy who followed logic even if his ways of doing so were kind of eccentric. In following movies, his logic is completely gone and he achieves stuff by sheer stupid luck. And we can see similar dumbing down on every character. Disney do not understand their stories and characters anymore. Be it classic animated ones, new animated ones probably too (Elsa is quite complex and I can't see them redo her in any sequel) or live movies like Pirates.
Heres the reason: Disney wants money. Animation doesn't give them enough money, so they crap all over animation and flip it off now, even though animation made them successful in the first place.
I love those weird, more teen-oriented cartoons from late 90s-early 00s. Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Titan AE, Iron Giant. Also Pearl Jam's “Do the evolution” music video and “Heavy metal” came to mind. But that's mostly for adults I guess. Wish there were more things like that :(
Im so happy you brought up Dinosaur, I've been asking myself this for a while now. How come dinosaur was awesome and able to emote but lion king was just horrible. I find it difficult to understand why they didn't build upon what dinosaur was.

They don't hate animation. They just reeeeaaaaly love profits. Every decision they make is geared towards profit and this nullifies any other value like say representation or creativity. If any like that will get money, they make it. If they don't, then they won't.
They do... at least those movies based on movies from the '90s. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion king made over 1 bilion + all the merch they sold I am sure they made a profit considering they are still going ahead with even more remakes
I 100% agree with you as for the case of Ralph Breaks the Internet I feel like the only two reasons that the sequel was made were 1 to promote their brand which is unnecessary and 2 I feel like they were to promote and market more Disney princess merchandise especially the shirts that the princess wear like nap queen and just let it go.
Yes there a animation company they probably love animation but money talks you can't argue with success and making money I know life's not fair trust me we're always going to live in the world of greedy people we just have to choose to not be like them be a better

It makes me really wish there was something I could do about it. The obvious answer would be to just not watch them, but Disney's such a marketing titan that getting any voice out there above all the ads is almost impossible. That also is what makes it hard for any new studio to come out and challenge them. If you want any team to work on something, you either need to work for nothing until the project is done or work for one of three or four companies that only care about safe bets like these remakes.
Pretty ironic how the company started because Walt Disney wished to make animation for everyone to enjoy, not just kids. And even after his death, the Renaissance era proved that notion. Now, the current CEOs only care about money and as long as the public is suckered into live action bs, they'll keep making it. I hate to say this but unless Disney starts caring about real animation again (not including the channel), it may as well be an empty husk to me.

Not exactly. It just depends on how much they need depending on the animation style, runtime, casting etc. Compare this Disney movie to this DreamWorks movie. Lightyear had a budget of $200 million for overly-detailed and realistic animation while Puss in Boots had half of that budget of $90-110 million for bright and cartoony animation similar to Spider-Verse's. But who brought in the bigger bag? Puss In Boots did. Just goes to show that your animation can be as beautiful as possible, but if the story is badly-written, there goes your audience.
I don't think Disney actually hates animation, I just think that they have run out of ideas, that's why they're remaking a lot of their old animated classics in live action.
I am not sure if they hate .. I mean they try to embrace 3D one. Like I really liked their new animation and there is still heart to be found in their new projects. They lost however any idea or love for classic animation. And they can't accept that there is something that is irreplacable with it and can't be outshined by new tech. Before live action crap mania, they were milking whatever's left from classics by terrible sequels to dvd. Hello atrocious Mulan 2. Since they beheaded their classic animation team as 'reward' for completing their last task being "The Princess and the Frog" - it was not fault of movie or people making it, just decision of higher ups to ditch classic animation altogether - they can't milk by sequels their whole classic animated movies. So now .. we get this live action crap instead.
Personally, it just seems that Disney is afraid of trying much that's new. A lot of things over the last few years haven't gone their way, not just in films, so they appear to be kind of panicking. So they fall back on making live action remakes of things they KNOW were successful, hoping the new generations will love them just like the original generations loved the animated films. If they want to do live action "remakes" they should take a clue from Maleficent. Tell the story from a different perspective! Change things up, don't just do the same movie scene for scene and hope for the best. They tried with Mulan but failed so hard because they forgot what made us love it in the first place, Mulans search for self and the power and honor she had in being herself. Plus, I never even heard they did a live action Lady and the Tramp lol. Wonder if they didn't think it would work so they just didn't bother advertising it all that much, like they did with Treasure Planet. All in all I think Disney needs to be more brave with the tales they tell, there as SO MANY incredible stories, from around the world, they could animate or do as a live action that I'm sure MANY people will love!
It's 100 years of Walt Disney, and they're throwing away the one iconic trait that brought us inspirations of cartoons and anime which wouldn't exist without his legacy today. It was already bad with Michael Isner, but now it's at its worst because their own greedy and selfish agendas are costing them millions and putting the best resorts on earth in jeopardy for the first time.
It's not even just animated movies nowadays, but there are also a lot of other movies, including an unnecessary or destroying continuation of franchises.
Disney has become so corporate it's not funny. I'm glad Dreamworks and heck Illumination respect animation more. I'm also impressed with Chinese animation and how their movies are evoking the Disney Renaissance but with Chinese Mythology. Granted there are many movies based off Nezha and White Snake, but regardless of that I'm definitely seeing a lot more creativity coming from them than Disney these days. Maybe Disney falling behind and dealing with another dark age will jumpstart another Renaissance, but I think they've dug themselves into quite a hole with how they're currently run. All of these remakes just make them look lazy, unimaginative, and greedy. Not to mention how they've handled Star Wars and Marvel add to that perception.
Some movies only work in 2D, 3D or live. Animated 2D animal movies like Dumbo or Little Mermaid won’t translate into a real, live world, because the OG story just wasn’t intended for that. They were meant to be in a vibrant, 2D, squash and stretch world. Something like POTC is meant to be in a grungy, real, live world. POTC just wouldn’t translate in an animated or 3D world. Something semi-realistic like Up or Moana work in a 3D world because they aren’t meant to be 2D animated, or real. All three mediums should be celebrated together, and sometimes even cross over. They are all important to film.
I honestly think that if they're going to spend so much money in time making live-action properties of their classics, why not just spend the money and make giant stage play runs? Revive a dying art form and make enormous boatloads of money.
I don't think that the CGI versions of the princesses looked really that bad in Ralph wrecks the internet, I honestly think they could have remade all of the original Disney movies in the new CGI Frozen/ tangled style. Your revamping your brand that way while still actually keeping animation alive
woah woah woah! I Loved Treasure Planet and Atlantis, and still do to this day. and the Emperors new Groove has soooo many 1 liners, that they keep slipping out even on a day to day basis, based on how many times i watched these movies as a kid!
The Disney we have today, is the example of what money hungry does to you. The Disney we knew in love is gone. Maybe one day, everything might turn back to normal.
As much as I loved and agreed with everything in this video. When he complained about how the Princesses talked about the things that they went through like how stupid the comments were about a big strong man showing up to help or the kidnapped and enslaved part. I just always saw it as Disney mocking people who say those things showing how untrue it is but lately they have been having things like in Peter Pan and Wendy they added in girls in The Lost Boys. Wendy is like, "You're not all boys," And the two girls are like, "So?" So who knows really? I have no idea what Disney has been up to these days. :(
Haha I can't wait to see what happens when Disney has made every previous film a live action one (including all of Pixar's, that'll be a nightmare). Would love to see them be forced to create actual ideas.
Seeing the recent Lion King side by side with the original animation, it makes the new one even worse because its just so...colorless. the animation was bright and vibrant and vivacious and the new one is... none of that. Some of those scenes even look like they're over exposed film because the lighting is so bad.
If they're going to remake their movies they should do the bad/unsuccessful ones. Treasure Planet could actually be great in live action. Imagine if they remade The Black Cauldron

It isn't that they hate it. As I found out by checking out on Internet, Disney's current CEO, Bob Iger, stronly thinks that animation and Disney as a whole are just for children. That's why they don't try to make something mature with their newest animated stuff (both films and TV series). Because they think that animation doesn't work that way. The only exceptions are the animated series Amphibia and The Owl House, but these have taken a lot of liberties from nowadays classic Disney style, so they count very little as justification. Unless Bob Iger figures out he's wrong about animation or is replaced by a new CEO who understands the true potential of animation, I don't see this situation changing.

About the animals being cgi. In this day & Age, you can only do so much with real animals before people complain about animal abuse. Look at the circus not using any more animals & things like that. Hell go look at TikToks of animals falling off of their owner’s beds & look at the comments of people crying animal abuse to the owners of said animals! So I get Disney using CGI animals as much as they can because they don’t want the backlash.
I have a question for you Aldone: Do you think if Disney animated their animated movies like how Sega did with Sonic the Hedgehog, it would be received better visually? I understand that at the end of the day, it still requires depth, but at least aesthetically, I think Sega did a good job reanimating Sonic and Co. to bring realism while still making them cartoonish(?). Edit: I didn’t think of it earlier, but this question is also open to the public. I would like to hear other people’s perspectives on what has and has not worked.
I like the remake idea… 20 years from now we can have the live action version of each animated film, it will be a disney movie week extravaganza in my house !
While I don’t think that highly of the live-action re-makes, I'm still a fan of Disney's newer original stories (especially "Encanto"). But it would be nice to have some 2D animation again.
There is a difference between what Disney and other animation companies do. And that is every time I have watched a live action remake, I would want to watch the original movie because they would leave one thing I missed from the original. Other companies like DreamWorks or Illumination, they make me rewatch their older movies because they tell a story. Or because they do a good job in making a movie with a game like Super Mario Bros. It made me want to play the games because it was a Mario game only cinematic, and that worked for me.
Basically Disney wants to prove that they're "all grown up" and can "appeal to all ages" by distancing themselves from a medium that is most often seen as kid stuff.
Whether or not this actually proves their maturity is... obvious.

I think a significant portion of upper management at Disney hates and/or is embarrassed by their own company and its history. Look at how many animators have left to go work for other studios, or the Imagineers like Joe Rodhe who left because they can't make the projects they want to. If anyone should be CEO it's someone like Joe or Tony Baxter who truly love the artistry of Disney.
Well, considering that most of Disney's current animation problems were caused by officials for the company who straight up admitted that they think animation is for kids (including one who must not be named) and Disney has Bob Iger back in the chair....

@Lauren Gibbs maybe ashamed is a better word, but there is some kind of attitude in the executive offices that doesn't want to acknowledge anything that came before them. Not the artists, or the Imagineers, and definitely not Walt himself. I think they are truly deluded enough to actually think their reboots and remakes are going to make people forget about what came before, because they are living in an insular bubble filled with asshole "yes men" whose job it is to make sure they're tuned into the weirdo "activists" on Twitter, because they have zero confidence in the people who actually get their hands dirty like Joe Rodhe. Who left after decades in the Imagineering department because they don't like the old guard who remember when it was a quality company to work for.

I'd watch it in a heart beat but make it so that it portrsys Mickey as a two faced villain, on the outside he's cheery, friendly & optimistic for the people & cameras but on the inside behind closed doors he's really greedy, corrupt & menacingly evil.
The irony that the three live-action Disney Princesses came onstage at last year's Oscars and gave one of the most outrageous speeches to anyone who love and care about animation. (Sausage Party exists, just saying.)

I don't think it's because animation is more expensive, I think that live action it's just quicker. With animation you have to create absolutely everything out of nothing but with live-action you mostly just have to edit and add a little bit of cgi.
Or in Lion King's case, still CGI.
Lazy either way. You see 2D animation movies (or even original 3D animations) take years to make and Disney pumps out copy paste without any freshness to it.
I wouldn't mind what kind of movies Disney is making as long as they are good. There are some animated films I wish they could reboot to make them better: The Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet, Oliver and Company, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and so on. There's a giant gold mine right under Disney's feet, but they just don't give a crap to dig it out. Speaking of live action movies, they haven't finish the Narnia series yet!

As someone who loves animation, I remember I used to look up to Disney. I loved so much of their work and it's just depressing to see what they've become. There has been some modern movies of theirs that I did like such as Cruella and Turning Red, but I'm just tired of the live-action remake schtick.
I still love their old material but I wish they would take this time as an opportunity to experiment within animation instead of rehashing their classics.

In a nutshell: Disney is losing its identity. They are investing way too much money and resources on flat live action aimed to minimize their own history, their own solid and still adored tradition with the animation medium. They want to completely cancel Pixar as a studio and make it part of the Borg Hive.
I truly hope that Little Mermaid LA will bomb at the box office. Money loss is the only reason Disney will understand to stop carrying on this disrepesctful operation.

It’s depressing, especially when lots of people who learned to animate, they did it for the sake of Disney only to find out they don’t need animators like that anymore.

Growing up in the 90s, I was astounded and in awe with what Animation could do in movies and short cartoon films. Everyone putting in such hard work to bring characters to life and creating a morale story I'll remember for the rest of my life. Were the movies 'Historically, Politically, or Culturally Accurate'? Probably not, but it never mattered to me because I related best to the CHARACTERS in the story! Ariel, Mulan, Belle, Jasmine, Kida and even Tiana all inspired me to be a better person! I have grown up to see 'The Jungle Book' in both Animation AND Live Action, each having their own twists to a story about a young boy who is raised by wolves and yet befriends a panther and a bear, going on a journey of realizing who you are while trying to avoid a tiger seeking revenge on ANY and ALL humankind! And if one should look, that some stories have been done to death. Animation may be difficult, but it DOES give people the ability to push boundaries thst live-actors and CGI puppets cannot. Take a look at Hayao Miyuzaki's work! All of that, came from a man's imagination with real-life experiences to make it believable and yet so out of this world! He finds inspiration from other cultures and adds tidbits of it in there. In Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Disney actually DID THE WORK into creating the Atlantean language long before James Cameron created his world of Avatar! In Avatar: The Last Airbender, they created a whole, new world based off of several different cultures with a magic that's 'NOT magic but an ancient art of culture!' Out of Martial Art styles! How cool is that? Even The Dark Crystal tv series made CGI work with a movie of voice actors and puppetry, because they stuck with the ORIGINAL storyline, and put a twist of a setting in the past! They can make great stories again (Disney), they just have to Create an idea, and DO THE WORK!

It's just when you grow up with wonderful animation and storylines, you tend to stick with the originals instead of the 'changed versions'.
I feel terrible about missing out on "Treasure Planet" in the theater. When I saw the trailer as a teen, I could only think of how stupid it was to have pirate ships, complete with sails, in space and nobody wore spacesuits! Then around a decade (or so) ago I watched a UA-camr gush over it, and blind bought it on Blu-ray. I thought that "Titan A.E." was beautiful, but this movie made it look like it was drawn in crayon! It's definitely one of my favorites.
In case you can't tell, I am a HUGE FAN of animation. From weekday afternoon and Saturday morning cartoons to big screen adaptations, I just love the artistry of hand drawn animation. I loved the rough sketches in the lines of the characters in the old movies like "The Sword in the Stone" and "The Secret of NIMH"; and when they added CG to enhance the environment like in "The Rescuers Down Under" and "Beauty and the Beast", I was just too excited where it all seemed to be headed! Then, after "The Princess and the Frog" failed, it went 100% CG, and I was so disappointed. And then they started remaking their classics into live action (or more realistic) movies and I was actually offended because it seems like they're saying "all that was just for the kids", and I'm fuming, "Like Hell they are!" >:^(
Not sure if Princess And The Frog failed Michael but similar to Fantastic Mr Fox in 2009, I think the film became overshadowed by Twilight New Moon at the box office

Appeal to the lowest common denominator and you'll make a lot of money, but do something interesting, thoughtful, and/or original and there's a huge chance that it'll fail. Y'know, "The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "The Shawshank Redemption", both "Blade Runner" films, and many more fantastic movies were all box office failures. Even the Coen Brothers never made a profit on any of their films until "True Grit".

It's not that "The Princess and the Frog" failed. For once, Disney BAAARELY, and I do mean BARELY promoted this movie. They didn't even tried. Had it not been that I was big fan of classic animation, I wouldn't have gotten to buy dvd to watch it. It was so poorly promoted that I forgot to go to cinema to see it. And after entire work was done, Dinsney PLANNED, pre-production of movie basically, to lay off their old classic animation staff. So they didn't wanted big time for this movie to succeed, to not draw attention on them basically beheading studios that made them who they are. They wanted them gone. I really enjoyed Princess and the Frog, and it's infuriating that Disney just casually wants everyone to forget it.
They have no faith in animation as medium, people in charge of it think very little about children or adults who grew up on classics. They just chase trends. And no, I am not person who is upset new Ariel is played by black actress. I am more facepalming myself because Disney in it's stupidity forgot WHY classics were animated in first place.
They. made. MUSICALS !!! You don't have to be an Einstein to know that musicals are quite known from issues of performance vs visuals. Just look at opera's. They deliver splendid performance for songs .. but characters are most likely being oversized aged Juliet (who was supposed to be skinny teen) singing to very old Romeo.
And Disney can pretend all they like how they aren't Hollywood of old, but .. yeah "The Princess and the Frog" treatment as whole rears up old ugly wrinkled racist mouse head again. They only did that movie to casually shut up audiences about why we never got african princess, before shutting down classic animation for good. Disney doesn't deserve that movie.
It's even worse that THEY KILLED Treasure Planet. ;-;

The real shame of it is that they often seem like they don't respect their audience as much as they used to because "cartoons are for kids". The biggest bone I have to pick with them right now is about The Owl House. I got into it recently because I heard good, unprompted reviews from a couple of youtubers I watch (all of whom are adults) and because my brother (also an adult) had seen it and recommended it. If I remember hearing correctly, they had cancelled season 3, but because of the huge cliffhanger at the end of season 2, were allowed a three 45 min episodes to finish the story.
Rumor was it was because of the LGBTQ+ rep, but Disney felt that The Owl House did not fit their ideal brand (kid focused cartoon series). In other words, it was attracting too mature an audience. I get the feeling that this view against animation is partly why all the "live action" remakes and why anime is popular. Japan doesn't seem to have this view, which is why they have kids' shows like Pokemon, more emotionally mature shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, and well written (if a bit adult) comedies like Konnosuba. What American companies won't provide, people have and will find elsewhere.
another part of it expands what you said about the show not fitting Disney's 'Ideal' brand, it's their perspective on animation itself. And I don't just mean that they view animation as something only for kids, but rather they don't look and respect animation itself like that do in Japan with anime. For them, animation is a medium which has allowed them to showcase any kid of story you can dream of.
I do love Full Metal Alchemist the Brotherhood. Animation still has a place in our hearts. There's a reason we love it so much.
Ironically, Scuttle as a gannet is the only character from The Little Mermaid remake that looks both genuinely interesting and funny because (1) gannets are rarely seen outside of popular culture besides documentaries, and (2) she makes me genuinely want to laugh more than the new version of Sebastian. I loved Atlantis, but it's sad that it didn't even allow the princess in that movie to become a Disney Princess. It's like Disney *was* actively sabotaging the transition period animation movies for their Live Action Remakes.

Home on the Range is ridiculously underrated. The animation was SO good. I'm still freaking BITTER about Disney closing down its big screen 2D studios. That had been my dream as a child and welp. I can never forget how disheartened Hans Bacher was when he gave a talk at my school. A student asked what kind of advice he would give to an animation student who wanted to get into Disney and all he said was "Don't." Such a blunt guy.
Back then, I may have winced but he was right. Disney just went downhill from there.
I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or not, but the recent movies Disney have been putting out are missing that magic that is so characteristic of their earlier films. I wish they would return to 2D animation, give us an original story or at least a fairytale (what they’ve usually been good at), and for once give us an actual villain that’s terrifying. The last good villain we had was Mother Gothel in Tangled, but that was almost 13 years ago!

I just watched treasure planet with my 8 year old nephew. He has never seen it and he got teary eyed during it and at the end said it was one of his favorites. We also watched Brother Bear right after and he loved that one too. Those films don't get enough credit.
I wonder if there is some ongoing conflicts behind the scenes with Disney and the animation guild. Could be this is there way of intimidating animators so they'll except poor working conditions (like they did for "live action" lion king) and scraps for pay. Just speculating here but the company does have a very long history of coming into major conflicts and being abusive towards creative teams.
If Walt Disney came back alive and saw what Disney had become, he would be very disappointed as they are literally going against everything he believed in when it comes to animation.
I remember watching a documentary years ago about Walt Disney and it always astounded me how much he and his company fought to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarves as spectacular as it was against so many obstacles.

Dreamworks and Disney is the biggest controversy of animation these days. Let's just make it short and sweet. Dreamworks has a long way to go to be considered good as Disney (although Dreamworks destroyed Disney 2022). Disney hasn't failed yet, they have tons of life still. Hopefully Disney won't destroy there reputation more than they all ready have.
I honest to god HATE this entire stupid "Disney VS DreamWorks" debate. Netflix had TWO animated films(Pinocchio and The Sea Beast) nominated and one of them has been getting awards left and right. And, that doesn't account for how many other films they had like The House(rated PG-13) and My Father's Dragon that were both snubbed. And, if anyone brings up how Netflix cancels their projects, one, every studio does that, live action gets the same treat, and three, no one had that excuse before all this. When Disney had Raya, Netflix had Over The Moon. When DreamWorks had Boss Baby 2, Netflix had The Mitchell's VS the Machines. When DreamWorks had Dragons 3, Netflix had Klaus. Netflix had the best year.

I'd like to mention after The Lion King released ,a lot of these remakes have not been as successful as of late, and most have just generally bombed or failed in streaming numbers. Things may finally be changing.
I think a big reason they use CGI for animals in the live action remakes is down to animal wellbeing. Disney came under major fire for Snow Buddies because some of the dogs died during production. That's why they sometimes look different in certain scenes, they got replacement dogs. Since then Disney has been hesitant on paying for a highly experienced animal expert and real animals, when they can just underpay their CG animation team to muster up an uncanny monstrosity
Its funny when humans pretend to care about animals by abusing members of their own species.
2D animation will never die off. In fact, in recent years, it has only gotten more popular than CGI animation. There is a way to save Disney, but it requires patience and determination to take back the magic of the company. I hope I can succeed in the end.

disney's problem isn't just that they're remaking all animated movies into live action, it's also that they're not bringing anything new at this point. no new story, no new style, no new technology, when so much of their history hinged on that. they're no longer trying to bring artistry and wonder. they're just trying to make money, and nothing else matters but money.
it's just sad. they could've been so much better if they went back to their roots but this is what we get instead. time to wait for the next cartoon saloon and studio laika works, i guess.
There’s been a couple of new stories, but none this year.
They constantly use the “Incredibles” type of look with different characters. Their older stuff use to look different based on the theme of the movie. Even the characters personalities are all the same. Very awkward and helpless, that don’t really experience much throughout the movie.
Treasure Planet was all but designed to appeal to young boys and Milennial young men. It seems like princess-obsessed Disney couldn't handle that. Possibly the same with Atlantis.
It also came out around the same time as Titan A.E. and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, and I think all 3 got lumped together by critics (who were definitely not the target audience)

I do really think the problem with current Disney is too much control by people who have no idea what the creative process entails. Walt Disney is always shown at the work floor with his fellow staff. He seemed to me to be a man who wanted to show the world what he and his team were capable of. He laid everything on the line for some of his films. Do you think current Disney would risk that? They're far too greedy and creatively bankrupt to even attempt that. They like things being easy. If things get hard they would rather scrap it than continue and push on.
CG is their preferred choice because it is slightly easier to handle. The computer handles a lot of the hard back breaking details. They don't need to worry about shadows as you set up a light and fiddle with details. They can move it around the scene. They can alter things easier. Live action is also always going to look worse as when they film for live actions they have no idea what the CG is going to look like so they have to fudge it and hope the VFX artists can deal with it.
On the bright side Japan is carrying on Disney's legend. They were partly inspired by Disney during that time and have set up an entire sub industry that rivals Disney. They're also willing to take risks they take new series from up and rising stars and bring their stories to life through 2D animation. Some succeed and others fail. I don't think any sensible author would currently be willing to entrust their life work to Disney. Animation requires a director and other heads to know everything single detail for every single frame. They should have control of their grand vision for the project but Disney doesn't allow that. Only their vision is allowed. They prefer being safe to putting hard effort into a project.
I keep on forgetting the lady and the tramp remake exists. I keep on seeing it and thinking "maybe I should watch it with my friend to make fun of it" but then again it looks so boring we'd probably either turn it off or just share memes instead, and then i forget it exists once more. It also speaks volumes of what a wet fart it was considering i've seen 0 videos talking about it.
Surely there’s a decent amount of videos discussing the remake but Lady And The Tramp is just fine for a Disney animation original even if it’s biggest contribution to pop culture is the spaghetti strand to mouth kiss being referenced again and again.

I always think it’s funny that a lot of companies such as Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, and Universal would treat animation as inferior and is willing to discard it and then praise their live action movies and blockbusters, but the thing is, most of them if not all of them uses CGI, which is a form of animation. Marvel, Star Wars, DC, Disney live action remakes, Avatar, Jurassic World, Transformers, and Fast and the Furious all use CGI to make their films look as realistic as possible.
This is nonsense. I *love* most Disney animation, especially the vibrant look of their big-screen films, and it is not wise to abandon it just to chase down a narrow path of modern audiences who dismiss animation as for kids, or raunchy and over-the-top when it is for adults. I need to get Disney animation back on track, with some help from Matt Braly and Domee Shi! It is our Hero's Duty.

You say 'modern audience' but it's hardly the truth. This schpill 'animation is for kids' has been a stupidity preached at the very least since 80-ties. I heard it my whole life. Disney chases people who never cared for Disney and never will. Back in the day Disney wasn't interested in chasing people who thought this little of animation. Disney lost sense of who they are.

Pirates of The Caribbean did really really well when it started and that proved that there was an audience for darker live action movies like that. Of course the series of films eventually fell off, I'd say by Pirates 4 and 5 after the original trilogy was over. That was when Disney shifted focus to buying pre-existing IPs like Marvel and Star Wars. Add that to all the attention that Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings got as well as Marvel and Star Wars before the Disney buyouts. Disney saw profits in audiences shifting towards live action films which is crazy because before that, making anything live action if it wasn't live action before was considered a sin. It rarely worked if at all. Then the MCU was a huge success. Older audiences were going to see them in massive numbers. Some grew up on Marvel, but most of them didn't . Many of them watched classic animated Disney films when they were little. Nostalgia. Pure profit, right? Not all animated films can work in live action though, especially when you change it too much. That kind of goes against the original vision of the film. As for going CG, it's just as expensive since it takes tons of people to make just as 2D animated films did before, but requires less resources. So they shut down animation studios they were no longer using, many of which were used in the prime of the Disney Renaissance. I have seen a surge of classic animations on UA-cam lately though by new people with new ideas and a lot of passion for Disney's classic animated films. That gives me genuine hope even if Disney never hires them. Someone else will.
Disney wanted to make a new live action franchise like prince of Persia Sorcerer's Apprentice john carter the Muppets tron legacy the lone ranger tomorrowland the nutcracker but they all failed financialy and this is where marvel lucasfilm 20th century fox and the remakes comes
Even with Pirates Disney didn't knew what to do. If you compare first movie vs sequels in writing .. it's clear misdirection. The sequels become more wacky, writing became way more shallow and as did the characters. In first movie Jack Sparrow was definately guy who followed logic even if his ways of doing so were kind of eccentric. In following movies, his logic is completely gone and he achieves stuff by sheer stupid luck. And we can see similar dumbing down on every character. Disney do not understand their stories and characters anymore. Be it classic animated ones, new animated ones probably too (Elsa is quite complex and I can't see them redo her in any sequel) or live movies like Pirates.
Heres the reason: Disney wants money. Animation doesn't give them enough money, so they crap all over animation and flip it off now, even though animation made them successful in the first place.
I love those weird, more teen-oriented cartoons from late 90s-early 00s. Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Titan AE, Iron Giant. Also Pearl Jam's “Do the evolution” music video and “Heavy metal” came to mind. But that's mostly for adults I guess.

They don't hate animation. They just reeeeaaaaly love profits. Every decision they make is geared towards profit and this nullifies any other value like say representation or creativity. If any like that will get money, they make it. If they don't, then they won't.
They do... at least those movies based on movies from the '90s. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion king made over 1 bilion + all the merch they sold I am sure they made a profit considering they are still going ahead with even more remakes

It makes me really wish there was something I could do about it. The obvious answer would be to just not watch them, but Disney's such a marketing titan that getting any voice out there above all the ads is almost impossible. That also is what makes it hard for any new studio to come out and challenge them. If you want any team to work on something, you either need to work for nothing until the project is done or work for one of three or four companies that only care about safe bets like these remakes.
Atlantis, controversial or not, is a real masterpiece. I loved it and I still do to this day.

Pretty ironic how the company started because Walt Disney wished to make animation for everyone to enjoy, not just kids. And even after his death, the Renaissance era proved that notion. Now, the current CEOs only care about money and as long as the public is suckered into live action bs, they'll keep making it. I hate to say this but unless Disney starts caring about real animation again (not including the channel), it may as well be an empty husk to me.

Not exactly. It just depends on how much they need depending on the animation style, runtime, casting etc. Compare this Disney movie to this DreamWorks movie. Lightyear had a budget of $200 million for overly-detailed and realistic animation while Puss in Boots had half of that budget of $90-110 million for bright and cartoony animation similar to Spider-Verse's.
But who brought in the bigger bag? Puss In Boots did.
Just goes to show that your animation can be as beautiful as possible, but if the story is badly-written, there goes your audience.
Problem is, Computer Animation is ALSO expensive, so it doesn't sound like a good excuse!

I don't think Disney actually hates animation, I just think that they have run out of ideas, that's why they're remaking a lot of their old animated classics in live action.
I am not sure if they hate .. I mean they try to embrace 3D one. Like I really liked their new animation and there is still heart to be found in their new projects. They lost however any idea or love for classic animation. And they can't accept that there is something that is irreplacable with it and can't be outshined by new tech. Before live action crap mania, they were milking whatever's left from classics by terrible sequels to dvd. Hello atrocious Mulan 2. Since they beheaded their classic animation team as 'reward' for completing their last task being "The Princess and the Frog" - it was not fault of movie or people making it, just decision of higher ups to ditch classic animation altogether - they can't milk by sequels their whole classic animated movies.
So now .. we get this live action crap instead.
Personally, it just seems that Disney is afraid of trying much that's new. A lot of things over the last few years haven't gone their way, not just in films, so they appear to be kind of panicking. So they fall back on making live action remakes of things they KNOW were successful, hoping the new generations will love them just like the original generations loved the animated films. If they want to do live action "remakes" they should take a clue from Maleficent. Tell the story from a different perspective! Change things up, don't just do the same movie scene for scene and hope for the best. They tried with Mulan but failed so hard because they forgot what made us love it in the first place, Mulans search for self and the power and honor she had in being herself. Plus, I never even heard they did a live action Lady and the Tramp lol. Wonder if they didn't think it would work so they just didn't bother advertising it all that much, like they did with Treasure Planet. All in all I think Disney needs to be more brave with the tales they tell, there as SO MANY incredible stories, from around the world, they could animate or do as a live action that I'm sure MANY people will love!
It's 100 years of Walt Disney, and they're throwing away the one iconic trait that brought us inspirations of cartoons and anime which wouldn't exist without his legacy today. It was already bad with Michael Isner, but now it's at its worst because their own greedy and selfish agendas are costing them millions and putting the best resorts on earth in jeopardy for the first time.
Animaton is (for the most part) the best form of art in films.
It's not even just animated movies nowadays, but there are also a lot of other movies, including an unnecessary or destroying continuation of franchises.
Disney has become so corporate it's not funny. I'm glad Dreamworks and heck Illumination respect animation more. I'm also impressed with Chinese animation and how their movies are evoking the Disney Renaissance but with Chinese Mythology. Granted there are many movies based off Nezha and White Snake, but regardless of that I'm definitely seeing a lot more creativity coming from them than Disney these days.
Maybe Disney falling behind and dealing with another dark age will jumpstart another Renaissance, but I think they've dug themselves into quite a hole with how they're currently run. All of these remakes just make them look lazy, unimaginative, and greedy. Not to mention how they've handled Star Wars and Marvel add to that perception.

Some movies only work in 2D, 3D or live. Animated 2D animal movies like Dumbo or Little Mermaid won’t translate into a real, live world, because the OG story just wasn’t intended for that. They were meant to be in a vibrant, 2D, squash and stretch world. Something like POTC is meant to be in a grungy, real, live world. POTC just wouldn’t translate in an animated or 3D world. Something semi-realistic like Up or Moana work in a 3D world because they aren’t meant to be 2D animated, or real. All three mediums should be celebrated together, and sometimes even cross over. They are all important to film.
Disney started hating animation when a certain little movie called Shrek came out all the way back in 2001

When he complained about how the Princesses talked about the things that they went through like how stupid the comments were about a big strong man showing up to help or the kidnapped and enslaved part.
I just always saw it as Disney mocking people who say those things showing how untrue it is but lately they have been having things like in Peter Pan and Wendy they added in girls in The Lost Boys.
Wendy is like,
"You're not all boys,"
And the two girls are like,
"So?"
So who knows really? I have no idea what Disney has been up to these days. :(

I'd like to add that The Lion King still grossed more than both Frozen movies combined.
My question is what will Disney do when all the classics have already been given remakes?
Quit doing any more remakes and focus on making more original movies, of course. 🤷♀

Haha I can't wait to see what happens when Disney has made every previous film a live action one (including all of Pixar's, that'll be a nightmare). Would love to see them be forced to create actual ideas.

Seeing the recent Lion King side by side with the original animation, it makes the new one even worse because its just so...colorless. the animation was bright and vibrant and vivacious and the new one is... none of that. Some of those scenes even look like they're over exposed film because the lighting is so bad.
If they're going to remake their movies they should do the bad/unsuccessful ones. Treasure Planet could actually be great in live action. Imagine if they remade The Black Cauldron
No! Stop saying they should remake Treasure Planet! I keep hearing people say that. They're gonna remake it with people being excited, audiences will watch it, & the movie will be trash. Disney will still make money though, & they will just move on to the next animated film to ruin. It. Is not. A good. Idea >: (

If late walt Disney was still alive today he would be disgusted and ashamed that his own company has turned away from doing and undervalued 2D and traditional hand drawn animation which he founded on that medium all because they believed that 3D animation is more profitable than and traditional hand drawn animation but believed that animation for kids nonsense which Walt Disney would be annoyed if they believe otherwise he was trying to prove that animation was more than just cartoons or stuff for kids he once

It isn't that they hate it. As I found out by checking out on Internet, Disney's current CEO, Bob Iger, stronly thinks that animation and Disney as a whole are just for children. That's why they don't try to make something mature with their newest animated stuff (both films and TV series). Because they think that animation doesn't work that way. The only exceptions are the animated series Amphibia and The Owl House, but these have taken a lot of liberties from nowadays classic Disney style, so they count very little as justification. Unless Bob Iger figures out he's wrong about animation or is replaced by a new CEO who understands the true potential of animation, I don't see this situation changing.
i love how the dogs in the air buddies movies look better than all the CGI animals in the "live action" movies and all they did was give a dog a CGI mouth
About the animals being cgi. In this day & Age, you can only do so much with real animals before people complain about animal abuse. Look at the circus not using any more animals & things like that. Hell go look at TikToks of animals falling off of their owner’s beds & look at the comments of people crying animal abuse to the owners of said animals! So I get Disney using CGI animals as much as they can because they don’t want the backlash.

Do you think if Disney animated their animated movies like how Sega did with Sonic the Hedgehog, it would be received better visually? I understand that at the end of the day, it still requires depth, but at least aesthetically, I think Sega did a good job reanimating Sonic and Co. to bring realism while still making them cartoonish(?).
Edit: I didn’t think of it earlier, but this question is also open to the public. I would like to hear other people’s perspectives on what has and has not worked.

I like the remake idea… 20 years from now we can have the live action version of each animated film, it will be a disney movie week extravaganza in my house !

While I don’t think that highly of the live-action re-makes, I'm still a fan of Disney's newer original stories (especially "Encanto").
But it would be nice to have some 2D animation again.

There is a difference between what Disney and other animation companies do. And that is every time I have watched a live action remake, I would want to watch the original movie because they would leave one thing I missed from the original. Other companies like DreamWorks or Illumination, they make me rewatch their older movies because they tell a story. Or because they do a good job in making a movie with a game like Super Mario Bros. It made me want to play the games because it was a Mario game only cinematic, and that worked for me.
