I agree with Grace on the matter of the image. I remember my current job. I was the ONLY one in suit, after being hired someone said the suit saved me.
From Trophy Kiprono to Dr Rebecca Nga'nga and now to Grace Mathu this flow of such conversations is absolutely in alignment with anyone who is visionary to growth development.Shukran sana Lynn and the entire team anticipating for more.

This is the true mindset of an HR professional expressed here. Anyone in employment or wishing to get HR services, study the mind from this video - how she expresses and responds to Lynn. Whether to have confidence in them though is another matter. It depends on the HR and your experience with them.
This came at the right time when i needed it the most, im at a point where im not enjoying the work i do and want to major in what i have peace at and enjoy doing most. Thank you for the show
Great show Lynn, we are always grateful for the shows, however, if possible get guys that sell in Marikiti or have succeeded in their businesses. Thanks
There’s something called *Striking a Fair Balance* in the hiring process the guest outline several steps but I’m going to focus on Fairness,Ultimately, giving candidates a chance to attend interviews is about creating an equitable hiring process that values substance over superficial traits. While appearance may inevitably influence perceptions, organizations must strive to focus on qualifications, skills, and potential. Employers who do so stand to gain a diverse, talented, and motivated workforce that benefits from perspectives beyond the immediate surface level.
@ While academic qualifications serve as a benchmark for evaluating technical expertise, they cannot account for every skill or quality necessary for success. For example, a graduate with impressive credentials might struggle with teamwork, adaptability, or creative problem-solving, all of which are equally important in many roles. Kenya has deviated from the norms and most employers employ based on factors known to the Public…I.e corruption, tribalism and of course sexual favors.
This was an excellent show, and Grace is a master of her craft in the People & Culture space. I have learnt so much and i will definitely reach out to her at some point, for a professional consult. Asante sana Lynn and team...keep rising!!
Great discussion. Thanks Lynn. On the real though - why do HRs or People and Culture Specialists hide budgets for the roles they are hiring for? They keep asking candidates how much they are earning in their current role, refusing totally to disclose the salary for the job they want to fill, then low ball potential candidates. After that they will tell management they have cut costs. Isn't that unethical? Why not disclose the salary range and leave to the candidate to take it or leave it. I love how American companies don't care about how much a candidate is currently earning, lakini these African companies, maaai looord...
Woow this was a great learning session. The host is asking relevant questions and the guest well prepared with great mastery of her craft, articulate and eloquent..LNS is truly on another level Good job to the team🎉🎉
Serious gaps & questions & inconsistencies in the story: 1. She started looking for entry-level HR jobs without papers, just searching?-kuna kitu hasemi yote. Think five times before leaving your job; social media isikupee pressure. 2. HR is NOT your friend. Never ever make the mistake of trusting your HR 3. The gender pay gap is not caused by gender alone, she made a simplistic comment there. Multivariate analysis shows many reasons behind this.
It makes sense that she looked for entry level work, she had PAPERS just not in IT so if she wanted to just be an assistant it is easier to get a job because she still had some experience working, employers will rather take ANY experience as long as it is in corporate and work with that person than freshly graduated non-experienced persons. She has also mentioned some of the reasons why women will end up being under-paid, including women having to pause their careers so that they can start families.
My passion professional course(accounting) which i did 10yrs ago has really disappointed me coz i have never had a chance to practice it in a stable organisation till todate......the culture in Kenya that you must know someone in order for you to be hired has really left many potential people out there in the market depressed. I however decided to venture into other unrelated career with hope that one day i will land into my desired career or if am unfortunate to have ever gotten one,i will make sure if my child expressed interest in the same course i have provided him/her the necessary support to realise the dream..... it's indeed a sorry state one happens to encounter in the Job hunt but life has to continue regardless 😢😢
Lynn is the best..Thought provoking discussion..In Kenya they look at your face and nyash when hiring..I have an MSc n tried applying for a bachelor's level job Ata sikuitwa😂
Speaking as someone who has travelled , nothing is better than connection in Kenya and most African countries... your skill set can genuinely be recognized in developed nations, in Kenya you'll have to get creative and do something...ditch the job seeker mentality 📌📌📌📌
💯 true supervisors are the ones that fires HR hires since i learnt this our supervisor is my best friend the HR just smiles at me bcoz of good report he gets 🤗
I agree with what she’s saying, but some of it sounds good on paper but kwa ground vitu ni different. At the end of the day HR is dealing with humans with different wills, emotions and backgrounds. That job requires a lot of wisdom but unfortunately, some HR personnel are just not meant for that position and end up messing up a lot of people’s careers
You're so right about that. Things don't work in real life the way she's presented them here. Not in tribal Kenya where people almost always argue over nothing. There are sacred cows that can't be touched and this HR thing is nothing but a bunch of flower girls with barely any active roles in some organizations.
We have We, the employees, and we also have HR and the Company. HR will always be on the Employers side, position, opinion, ... I dread any sitting with HR or the Supervisor.
Its so unfortunate that some hr hire based on which tribe one comes from. I was in a certain hotel and one person from the hiring team boldly told me that its unfortunate that they never hire people from the community i come from. Sometimes the hiring managers should also give people a chance to prove themselves that they can work and deliver results
Parents gather here your children finish university n you immediately return them to do masters without any job experience then you claim my son or daughter are un employed come on parents .
Let them study when the opportunity and resources are highly available. On the flip side, let them navigate through the intricacies of life at their own volution.
the talent acquisition manager has points but it sounds like red flags sugarcoated to look like honey.. for instance we are told the HR knows the budget is 200k, but they'll tell you the budget is 100k, we are also told if you appear valuable for a company, they can stretch their budget to accommodate you.
But getting into the interview room is a major hurdle. How do you determine who to invite for the interview when you have many applications that meet the criteria you are looking for?
The number of application letters that don't even reach HR is a lot most are discarded apo kwa reception desk before a position is even advertised they already have MTU wetu in line so interviews are just formalities.
Hearing the statement: "I have no friend in busines," makes me love this HR more. Now a days people operate from the standpoint of friendship: I pat your back, you pat mine. Things are always good on paper, but there is choas on the ground. Lol. SWOT is celebrated on paper, but catches stroke during meetings.
Everyone is replacable. Employees must stop thinking that they are very good in what their are doing. That means their job is safe. I have learned not to be a boss's friend. My colleagues are not my friends.

American companies used to do the same untill it was made illegal in some states.

As an employer, HR is a very good person to have on board. As an employee, confidence abt HR is definitely lower, though they are necessary.
