    Tried this out yesterday! Got some help from a friend of ours that surf and paddleboard a lot. We used a wider board that really helped with stability and I reckon would be great for fishing of it as well. Really fun, one of the best days of my life. I felt more attached to the sea in a way. Could see the sea floor much closer instead of leaning over the side like one does on a boat.

    You're so right about newbies only using their arms. Spreading the load on more major muscle groups us what allows you to paddle for hours. Then you can go real distance and genuinely explore! Good vid, thanks.

Today is my first go at it on a quiet part of a local river. I wrote down the Rules! I have a great core (TRX fanatic) so I'm sure that will come in handy today. THANK YOU very much! Responding to some of the posts here: This video covers golden rules for **paddling technique** vs. general advice for SUP. 'Eyes on the horizon' is a great one that I use a lot and could certainly be included here (as could many, many others!). As for SUP-Surfing, this video is for beginners and doesn't cover surf zone etiquette or technique, that can be found in the "Taking your SUP to the Surf" Episode. Thanks for watching!

    The first and most important rule should be "GET YOUR EYES UP, LOOK AT THE HORIZON". I've seen this instantly transform completely frustrated people into decent SUP riders. It's my main rule with students. Looking at the water or board is a sure route to getting wet. There's too much contrary motion for your balance brain to process (a beginner's or even intermediate SUP paddler). Looking at the horizon gives your balance centers a point of reference. Try it sometime with students.

    Number one rule should be: LEARN WAVE ETIQUETTE if you must paddle at a surf break! This means: a) Taking the wave that's appropriate for your craft. Not every single wave just because you can, but instead leave shortboarders and longboarders waves that are appropriate for their boards. b) Know what a left and right is, know what priority is, know what snaking and dropping in are, learn where to paddle out, avoid people going down the line, etc. Otherwise people are going to hate you.

  • @malaciousmarty
    @malaciousmarty 11 років тому

    surfing requires more balance. Even if you are on a longboard, you still have to stand up to catch the wave, not run into it. Plus paddleboarders are always tourists who crowd the beaches and the water

  • @ingoFX
    @ingoFX 11 років тому

    I find surfing a short board way easier than a SUP.
    Paddling into a wave lying down is easier than paddling standing. Standing once you've got the wave? difficult? hardly
    I still prefer surfing my 6' 2" short board than taking out my 10' 6" SUP, but my SUP's mainly for exercise - it introduced me to a whole new world after well over 20+ years of only riding short boards. Part of the reason for SUP is to go places a short board can't - SUPers that crowd/hassle short board breaks are just ignorant

      3. Its lame.

    • @mann4629
      @mann4629 9 років тому +1

      Rockie, I can see the dangerous aspect, especially if YOU are in the water. I get that you provide the surfer space and that non surfers might want to choose separate spots etc. but the ocean is big and is for everyone. I live in the mountains and we have trail etiquette and rules. Hikers have the right away, followed by horses, followed by bikes. Bikes are the most dangerous and out of courtesy hikers will ofte move to the side of the trail but in the end that is not the rule.
      2. Cheating? really? who says so? enjoying the water in any way is not cheating. Cheating is when someone else writes your term paper. Surfing is hard, some people may just want to have fun. I would love to surf, but try as I might the few times I get to the ocean a year, I can't quite get it. I also have shoulder injury etc. Why is it cheating that I can find other ways to be healthy and happy in the ocean?!
      3. Lame? I guess you are much cooler than say, Laird Hamilton? I am sure of it. so are you right? if so, well that's just lame.

    • @rockie071
      @rockie071 9 років тому

      M Ann
      1.SUPs are HUGE compared to "normal" surfboards. Most people that paddle out with one of those things in crowded lineups barely know what they are doing, and once they fall there is a huge piece of debris that takes out anyone in its way. Using your example. Imagine someone that barely knows how to ride a bike coming at you at about 30mph on a trail thats 2' wide and shear cliff on each side. Sound like fun? 2. Cheating. 99.9% of those in the water are using their arms to get into waves. By using a giant board and a paddle, you can catch a wave that is way outside of the normal lineup. Its too easy. Cheating. 3. Laird Hamilton is an amazing waterman that does alot of stuff for publicity. Just because he decides to occasionally ride a SUP in waves doesn't mean it isn't lame. Then again I don't look to celebrities for advice on whats cool or not. Look SUPs are fine for cruising around and enjoying yourself, but they are a danger in most lineups. If you were in the water surfing almost everyday like I do then you would understand. I've seen more than my share of people damn near get killed by those things.

    I've seen some of the comments and responses and I still don't think you understand the contention: THE Golden Rule is "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you." Therefore, your video is not a "Golden Rule" video, but strictly a "Technique" video. You just need to change the title so the rest of us understand what we are about to watch. "Golden Rules" would have been exactly rules, not techniques. An example would be if you're paddling around still water in the bay and another SUP falls in the water like their dead, go rescue them. Apparently you did a Surf video so I won't exhaust that. It's just about your title advertising what you're preaching, and they don't jive.

    This video is so wrong. First his paddle is too short, the length should be at least 6 inches over his head when standing on flat ground. This insures you don’t over reach and hurt your back or go off balance. Second the scooped part of the paddle should be away from you, this isn’t a kayak. It insures you get the most out of your stroke. It actually takes way less energy to paddle that way. That’s why it looks like he is paddling harder than he needs to. Paddling should be fluid and almost effortless, he is working way too hard.

    This is totally misleading, SUPTV. My golden rules of paddling are: 1)always yield to smaller craft, whether surfing or flatwater paddling; 2) never engage in any manuver or activity that could possibly lead to endangering others; and 3) smile! Our sport has a major perception problem (that all SUP paddlers are competitive jerks that want all they can get without regard for others), and this type of video only serves to exacerbate that negative perception.
