That does sound bitter. I assume that in the version without romance, nobody ever told him that he's valued as a person so he only weighs his worth in magic, so to speak. It's a little sad to have this kind of character development tied to the romance plot, as it devalues the importance of friendship.

But that is even more the case with Astarion. Astarion's personal growth overcoming his trauma about his mind-controlled slavery and forced prostitution is so tied to and dependant on being romanced. Not merely having Astarion around on high approval (although that helps to get Astarion to trust you). There are so many scenes about his past that only trigger when you're in a relationship with him.
If you leave him at camp all the time then all you get to see all game is Astarion's Act 1 facade, little of his personal quest about Cazador except maybe the Gandrel stuff in Act 1, investigating his scars with the help of Raphael in Act 2 (and some ppl even miss that), you'd miss the hugely important reaction to Araj Oblodra, until in Act 3 you have to deal with the Gur and vampire spawn and Cazador in the finale of his questline where all the abuse Astarion had to endure becomes hugely revelant but a player who never interacted with Astarion much up to that point would be completely in the dark about it.

@@TF2CrunchyFrogYes, a mate of mine mentioned this too, when I was gushing about how much enjoyed Astarion's personal quest and interactions. It feels a little odd to me as well, because Astarion's romance not being very romantic (in the chocolate & roses sense) and instead being focused on trust, basically is the reason why I like so much. It has this feeling of being in a relationship with your best friend - at least with Spawnstarion. Most of it should translate really well to him only being your besti.

Bro humans have no inherit worth what so ever.Money decides your worth. If magic was real then only individual strengths would decide one’s worth as it should be.The drow in me dreams about a world like that free from false tolerance liberated & released of our own world that makes me continuesly bend the knee to imbecills that i don’t even believe in.The world where good looks are obselete & power rules the cosmos yes i want it

He's right, though, the Gods certainly don't deserve their power. Why shouldn't mortals work to usurp them?

@@almisamihow long would it take for someone to forget they were once a mortal and not born a god? It'd only be a matter of time before they lose themselves in their own power, for someone like Gale it'd prolly happen sooner rather than later; You wouldn't be getting rid of the problem, you'd simply be replacing it with a new one. (Also, all that responsibility seems tiring)

I literally made a note as I was playing about his "Don't be a hindrance" line like that is pure angst material

I was really surprised by the friend options in this scene. I wanted to see how the conversation is different with being only friends with him, as his boat scene is purely a romance scene. All the options after 6:12 mark are the friendship options. I am planning to do a full boat scene -> confronting Mystra video since the Gale's responses are largely different what you pick out in there. But that's going to take a while to record and edit in a good way.... Also probably one of the very few times I use a different screenshot for the video than the footage, I just got that while reading the book as him and found it so funny!

I could've sworn I was able to previously convince him right then and there, to drop the idea of using the crown to become a god - even when I was romancing him. Now though, it just cuts to him telling me to meet him that night to discuss it further. I hate that.

gale and astarion both have ambitions for ascending to something greater. i think they should be boyfriends~ they could make each other better or worse lol.

Gale and Astarion: both suffer from supernatural "hunger", both get the option to "ascend", both are incredibly dependent on being romanced to get a "good" path, although Astarion can actually ascend and live again (at the price of becoming evil), while Origin Gale's attempt to usurp Mystra ends in death. Gale can go to Elysium with her, while Spawn-Astarion is stuck in this state.
Astarion and Dark Urge: massive parallels, "monsters" (vampire spawn, Bhaalspawn), bloodthirst vs urge to murder, moral vs evil path
Gale and Karlach: living on borrowed time, both have magic item in their chest that will eventually kill them
Astarion and Wyll: both have an abusive "master"
Astarion is the only one who gains a massive advantage from the tadpole so he is reluctant to lose it, but it also the only companion who will actively refuse the Astral tadpole transformation
Astarion and Shadowheart and Gale: hiding secrets (vampire spawn, Shar worshipper, walking nuke)
Astarion and Shadowheart: amnesia (Astarion can hardly remember his mortal life including his own face, Shadowheart has false memories but at least she can get better)
Wyll and Gale: both have massive egos that led them to do something foolish
Astarion and Karlach: both were enslaved and forced to do things for their masters against their own wishes, both had their bodies transformed

Great, Gale, now that you know all about the Netherese magic on the Crown of Karsus and the Netherstone and how they influence the tadpoles, can you find a way to transfer that magic from the tadpole to Astarion so that he can keep that protection after the tadpoles are all dead? Thanks.

There's a ring that casts permanent [Darkness] around you, and it's only rare. Frankly there a ton of other magic doodads that would offer him the same protection.

It's necessary for his story to continue. I'm not sure how the ending would look like without giving it.

I forgot to finish this storyline, so he never got the book. As a result, I found out in the epilogue that he was dead.
