I need to get me a stripping machine like that. Stripping wire by hand is for the birds.
Here is Paul using a drill on a hand crank stripper. Here I am watching this and fabricating in my mind a way to re-purpose an old dryer motor and some old lawn mower pulleys to get a constant not lightning speed, but still quick, process going. Thanks a bunch Paul for challenging my mind today! Love the videos. Please don't take this comment as negative, I like finding new ways to challenge my mind. 😁

Paul I can remember being pulled to scrape yard, behind alleys and going through the simi truck "trash" after repairs(dad's trucking Co.) when under age 10 looking for copper. Even then we understood copper really was "green" and a good thing at our house.

Next time you find a sewing machine use the motor and foot control. Hooked up to the stripper, you would have both hands free for the wire.

Paul, maybe look for a bigger 120 volt drill with a variable speed lock-on trigger or with a Drill Master speed control from HF Tools and a
HF Tools Momentary Power Foot Switch.

Thanks for reminding me of the days I spent in my late teens breaking up old copper pipe and filling old copper water tanks when I worked for a plumber prepping it for recycling. I'd get 5 or 6 copper tanks and he'd cut off the tops and I'd get stacks of old pipes he'd collected to break into short pieces. God bless the work Paul
Hi. I actually enjoy this video. Hint, after going through the slicer, fold the lengths of copper as you are taking off the insulation and you don’t need to handle it twice. When I was young I worked for a wire manufacturing company. Have a wonderful week!

I came across your channel a few years back because back then I was starting to accumulate copper wire and was debating if it was worth stripping.
Somehow I got trapped down the UA-cam rabbit hole and came across your channel years later after continued viewing iam glad you’ve made a video on striping wire haha unfortunately it does not look to be your thing but keep at it and I promise each time you give it a go you’ll find better and more productive ways of stripping.
My little tip is to assort your wire into same gages of thickness so that you won’t need to constantly keep adjusting and you can hammer out 1 gage wire at a time

It's electrifying.There is always a reason for a safety guard on any machine. You scared the s**t out of me. I really thought you did your finger in if not worse. Thank God for looking out for you and keeping you safe. I was going to suggest you fold the wire as you remove the insolation to save time and a step but I noticed you were doing that at the end.I know this is not your thing but on a nasty day it is productive. Maybe when you want to do the bigger stuff use the hand crank ? Keep Safe❤Keep Well❤ Really like your coffee station.
Hey paul, my husband bought me that same stripper, and a drill i love them, i was stripping wire with a razor blade b4, i also strip the stranded wire and some of the thicker electrical cords, great $$ maker for sure, I'm not collecting scrap again until my yard starts paying for it again, so just dumpster diving and wire for now

Yep been there done that. I found out it’s best to do on a rainy day provided you can’t get comfortable on the couch, recliner, swimming pool, beach, deer stand, fishing hole, 😜 I must say though for a morning of bi polar flare ups it was relaxing to watch for 50 minutes.🙏

Nifty cutter thingie. Reminds me of mother's hand turn meat grinder, her hand turned cherry pitter, and her little hand turned nut chopper, all gone the way of antiques. I had fun turning them while she loaded the to-be-ground foodstuffs. Lots of fun, at least for a small child. We didn't watch television. Had no use for it.
Oh wow, it's really that easy to strip wire? That's a cool gizmo. I don't mind you striping as long as its only the wire. Something to do whilst watching TV or your UA-cam video's. If only it was worth scrapping in Australia. I dropped off 800lbs of fairly clean scrap at the recycler and they charged me $18.
Bigger cable with multiple wires inside, a good sharp knife works well. Put one end in vice, then slide blade down like a wood draw knife.
My uncle was an electrician, he saved every little scrap piece of wire from each job. Threw it in barrel, once it was full, we would strip it all into another barrel.
In the UK no. 1 copper wire is £1 a kilo. Strip it to turn it into bright and the price goes up to £4 a kilo, so over here it is worth the effort to strip.
Don’t forget to factor in the weight of the plastic once striped

You need to have your son, daughter or lady friend at the end pulling it apart as it comes out, and have the trash can there as they are tearing it apart

Yep, any small amount of micro scrapping that Paul is up for will definitely be more fun and go much faster when he has some company to do it with...and I think the current GF (I looked her up as he instructed us to at the Christmas rehearsal, FUN!) is a willing participant except sometimes when she is there and helping then he forgoes the video...like when she suggested they do a ferrous trip...they eventually did that scrap yard trip but we didnt get to go. But thats fine for now and I think later she will be happy going along with us!

hey Paul, i know for me personally its not the pay off right away that is the goal. for me when i strip wire it is because i have down time or crappy weather and would otherwise not be doing anything and also i dont sell it right away, thats something i guess you could hoard it and just keep filing 5 gallon buckets for a rainy day or for when prices are really really high. thats what i do anyways, but to each their own! glad youre back and feeling better paul!
I agree with Jay H 100%!! It’s nice to get paid for your work and expenses but I get the feeling that recycling the wire, metals and such are more than $$$ for you. You really seem to care about this planet that we are leaving for our kids and future generations. 🙏🏼💖🙏🏼💗🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

Thought I'd be bored watching wire being stripped, but it was strangely satisfying !!
Flip the wire stripper on the other side, remove handle, and put the drill on a low/medium speed, with the trigger tied down, and just feed wire through. Basically automated process untill you need to change the height for different wires
Had no idea how wires are striped. Looks like something I’d tell a kid. I can make this much if not done. If you want to do it you can have the difference.

Strip a bunch of wire before you pull it apart Then have a seat and pull plastic off.

God bless you, Paul, you are awesome! When you start your wire through with the crank, take the end of the wire coming from the wire stripper firmly between your fingers and pull. You'll find it's faster then using the crank. Thank you for the fun video.
First time watching stripping by machine nice thing to have. Electricity still in it you hear it. These wires were not free you work real hard for everything you have. Bless you thank you for sharing information I may need one day. Great video Sir.
Hi Paul, glad your finger didn't get caught. So I'm just gonna pass on something I saw on someone else's channel I'm sorry but don't remember who's it was. From what I've read unless you bought a really cheap stripper the blades last a long time & are rust resistant so you can set them pretty tight against your wire. If you notice the ones that coil are also stripping themselves so the trick I saw was placing a barrel next to the work bench & once youve got about 6 inch of wire through the stripper make sure the tip of the wire is free from the insulation & it's peeling itself off & then simply angling it down into the barrel. The stripped insulation falls away & your copper is safely in the barrel & you're ready to go again.
Hey Jessica, the only downside to running the blade tight, is that if you are stripping stranded wire, it cuts into the strands, then you pretty much have to wear gloves and check your work area for little strands of wire. I bought a stripper somewhat like this one, and it cuts great, but I've stuck myself quite a few times keeping the tension too high. Hope this helps.
I agree with Jessica, especially since you’re only stripping solid core. Another idea is add an L angle on the output side of the blade. 4-6” after you start the strip separate that small section on either side of the vertical piece an it might do the rest of the separation for you. And you forgot to add in you ‘visiting time’ and camera adjustments time. Maybe put an adjustable camera mount clamped to that pole light at the end of the workbench, that way it can act a bit like a tripod.
@@95ffd stranded copper is definitely pokey, I've been stuck countless times while manually stripping for small projects but Paul doesn't strip stranded copper which is why I suggested this method. Running a blade tight on stranded also runs risk of fragmenting which can end up in your eyes which I've unfortunately seen. I'm a huge fan of safety glasses & gloves when doing any tool or metal work. I worked as an engraver for years & also worked as a surgical tech so saw my share of work place accidents which in most cases could have been avoided by taking 5 seconds to tie off or put on standard safety gear.

I strip most of the thicker wire and I don't care that I'm not making huge bucks per hour doing it, because I'm making a heck of a lot more than those who criticize, sitting on their posteriors and having to expand the borders of their garments. Only you can decide if it's worth it. Great video brother, and glad you didn't get hurt.
use to help my uncle back in the 80s do that except we put it all in a 50 gallon metal drum and burn off the plastic fun smelling the fumes lol

Paul, I'd suggest you create a small stand, maybe with a block of wood and a clamp, for your drill. Then you could just set it on the stand and not have to hold the drill the whole time. Also, as you pull off the insulation, do your bends of the wire, and you won't have a second step after the insulation is off. :D
I thank God you were not severely injured. Last year my brother injured his left hand on a table saw. As my brother was yelling for his wife to come to him a neighbor woman came running to him and knelt down and started praying. The emergency room doctor was able to do stitches and my brother healed. My brother is the lead guitarist at his church. God is good!
I always save my wire stripping for the winter months and the bad weather. Is it worth it?? eh? but I get satisfaction from doing it. Your machine is definitely better than my vise and wire strippers/ utility knife. Great job Paul!! God Bless.

I got jewelry made from scraps of copper wire my son would find on job sites and save for me. He was a hvac tech. He finally gave me a whole roll of 18g copper wire. Woohoo. I love it. I also liked telling folks my jewelry was made from recycled copper. Lol.

Got smart, look on line for stripping machine and found different types. Ended up with the stripmeister. Some I still do with the wire wheel. Keep up with the situation, Paul! I strip what you call #1 - the solid core stuff. I'll also do some twisted if thick enough. Safety first always. My stripper is motorized. I always have the guard in place, know where both my hands are and check that long lengths aren't twisted around a body part before I press the green button. We bleed enough in scrapping even when we're careful. I get a lot of wire. My motorized stripper paid for itself in a few months.
Mine also paid for itself in 4 or 5 months. I've got an Enerpat multi cutter 750w, cost AU$ 900 and I'm not cashing any copper in until I have 1000kg (around AU$ 10-12 grand. Wanna be able to show something for my efforts!
It goes a bit quicker if you do all the same size at a time so you don’t have to keep adjusting, it is something I do here in the winter during snow storms or rain storms. Get a bit more value when there is nothing else to do.

I always wrap the wires around my hand and then pull them off and then gently press the resulting wire together so that it doesn't unwind a little again
Yay a Paul video 💥 to strip or not to strip, wire that is. It all depends on how you value your time and if it's enjoyable. Me I would never want to strip a lot at a time, but to just do a few pieces here and there until there's a ton of it, then I would say to me it would be worth it.
I stopped scrapping a couple months ago I scrap for maybe five or six years I just been having bad luck at my scrap yard having to replace my tires a lot of times when I go scrapping because they can't keep their yard clear of debris it was costing me too much money wasn't worth scrapping that made me lose interest glad to see somebody enjoys it I enjoy your videos they're fun to watch may give me the motivation to get back at it may try a different scrap yard might have to drive further out but my give it a shot

I am from the UK and we have a tool called a Stanley Knife, that you can buy various styles of blade for. Also electricians have pliers that strip the outer plastic off, I am sure they would have the same in the USA that he could use to strip that really large cable

Hi Paul, I have been watching you strip copper and I just wish my husband and I had one of those wire strippers. Life would be so much easier.... lol. we ran a scrap yard and my job was taking apart small motors and stripping the wire we had. I loved the job but it was time consuming and a bit boring.
Sometimes the boring stuff feels miserable to me.

I use the same stripper, however mine uses a guide to help feed the wire into the stripper. The guide has 4 different wire sizes. I prefer the drill method vs. the handle. Saves time.

Speaking for only myself I strip copper wire to stockpile ultimately amounting enough total to make it worthwhile smelting heaps upon heaps of copper into ingots. Of course I smelt my aluminum, lead, zinc & tin while at it....making some nice handy pure metal ingots I'll later make use in some project or another weather it's casting, or pouring, blacksmithing or WHATEVER... And doing it myself ensures that I know 100% certain that I have only that metal that I put there myself 😁
Working as a flagler for the electric company one year. They had several big coils of high voltage copper wire fall off the back of their truck. They picked them up with the pole boom and put them both in the back of my pickup truck. Those coils must have weighed 700 pounds each. Lucky I had a set of helper springs on my 3/4 ton pickup truck. That was some money 15 years ago.
Paul, I have worked with those huge copper wires before and actually the easiest way is to use a box cutter blade and just pull it along the length of the sheathing. It is SO worth it. Those copper pieces inside are really thick. It doesn’t take too long at all.
My scrap call stranded wire bare bright as long as it's stripped and it's still stranded.

You should have gotten the one with the motor on it way ezer i keep finding wire all over my area and keep filling my garage still cant keep up with it is crazy to see the growth of my area with whats going on
I just got mine with a motor for about $150, and it does great! Quiet and fairly slow.
Also, where I am at, clean stranded is still #1 bare brite copper.
Hi Paul. I know you are ADD andstreamlining systems is not your strength so here are a few ideas to consider to streamline process. I am a work smarter not harder person, so offer the following ideas...
Each time you come in separate stranded from nonstranded into separate containers.
1) tighten drill chuck onto stripper so you dont have to reposition with each wire
2) run all wires through stripper, then
3) remove casing from all wires
4) clean up and discard casings.
By repeating the same step on all wires before proceeding to the next you are saving time and wasted motions switching between steps. Less moving back and forth, less continually reorienting to different movements.
I used to use a ofla blade over my leg with a rag

I once had 1k feet of 4 guage cable to strip (3 pcs 330' ea.). I made a gadget to hang on the hitch ball on my truck which I pulled the cable through and it stripped the insulation off. I had to pull it with my lawn tractor. Worked great. Didn't know you can buy these gadgets.

I found that with the thicker cable, it was easier to pass it through numerous times but rotate it a quarter on each pass and then it will peel like a Banana.

Yes - its worth it - clean Copper fetches much more Money as just Copper Wire with its Insulation - it is with every Metal - You take Your Time and Strip and clean Your Scraps lets say - Aluminium Doors to just Aluminium by taking all the Rubber Seals out and Metal Handles and Hinges - You get a Premium for it - so - stripping Copper Wire is the Way to go - but needs a Great Stripping Machine like Yours - we see cheap Units what jam up and making a mess !!!! And Yes - lots of Cups of Coffee - You have such a Great Set Up !!!! We Love it - Keep Safe and Cheers from us in Australia !!!!

I realize this video is 3 years old and you probably already figured this out, but it helps if you put your drill on the slow power setting. It can still grab you but its not as dangerous as the high speed setting.
