You don't need the suit to go to lantia but you do need it to stay after the portal closes, and to explore outside the portal area (red line) the first portal gets you to A3, A3 is where the portal to lantia is.
Batteries and 02 can be found at the oil rig and A3. If you have the suit before you go to A3 it works as a hazmat suit
Once the portal closes you cannot go back unless somebody is on the other side to turn it back on.
