Well it's not very new. In the main storyline you do this with Artemis. You allow him to die or put him in a simulation of a galaxy. So in a sense all of the deceased travelers are still running around thinking they are alone in their own galaxy to explore but really you put them in your own simulation its just not connected in the sense that they are full formed, instead a hologram. They cant see you because of this. Vice versa.

All ingredients can be grown from freighter.
The blue ice plant = flour
Cactus flesh = Cactus Juice = suga cubes
flour , suga cubes = suga dough + nip nip = herbal cookie
Bread is also easy to make from growing product
Feacium = wild yeast + flour = plane dough = bread

That makes sense, since we all don't actually exist and each player is another sliding-door iteration of THE Traveler.
Its an interesting feature, if its deliberate. It fixes the overload to some systems, like PS4, that keeping track of all the player positions and animations causes. Its always multiplayer that craps in the sleeping bag when there are issues, especially with expeditions.
And you can't be targeted for a nice 'how's your father?" rocket salvo I like to give people when I find them running around planet-side, hoping they have pvp turned off. 😂

You select it in your inventory with the quick select (Y on Xbox) and select the nearby players inventory. Hope this helps
