What is so crushing is seeing all those happy pictures of ABBA together and then knowing that they all divorced and stood on stage next to each other "singing" of their break up... except it is almost not singing... but telling... telling the story. These four were SO happy together with their success and lives... but it crashed when pressures overwhelmed them. Great band, great music, great lyrics, great singers... so tragically sad and relatable for anyone that has had a divorce.
This was actually a true story. Agnetha (lead singer) sung this sad emotional song. It was about her ex-husband (playing the guitar next to her), & felt so sorry for her. But she is a sensational singer no matter what!! xx
It gets more impactful when you realize that the song was written after Agnetas and Björns divorce and it was very hard for Björn to write the lyrics as it was so personal to him. He was also worried about if Agneta could manage to sing it but she said she could put her own feelings into the song.
ABBA is acronim with initials of Their first names, in the begining two swedish couples: Agnetha (blonde singer) & Björn (guitarist songwriter) Benny (pianist songwriter) & Anni Frida (brunette singer) both couples separated before the breakup of ABBA in 1982: Agnetha & Björn at end of 1978 Benny & Frida at end of 1980 ABBA have more than 20 worldwide hits between 1972/1982, included: Waterloo, Mamma Mía Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a chance on me, Chiquitita Super Trouper All these songs are in your album recopilation GOLD (1992) that a year ago arrives to 1.000 weeks at Top 100 in UK Official Charts (first group singer or artist to do it) and have more than five years consecutively in the UK Top 100 (these week at #6 in the 30th anniversary) After more than 35 year all four ABBA members return to studio together and recording initialy two new songs and finally a full new album Voyage released in last November 2021 that is a worldwide success And in last May 2022 all four ABBA members asist to the premiere of the Voyage Concerts in the new ABBA Arena in London UK the ages of all ABBA members now is: 72 Agnetha 77 Björn 75 Benny 76 Anni Frid (Frida)
(S) - Allow me to be 'star struck' (though I didn't know it at the time). Standing on the same stage as Agneta, when I (we, Paradox) played 'dance band music' (country-ish) and she appeared for some local event, kissing my microphone ...
I've listened to the song for 40 years and it still get's me right in the soul. It is truly a great song accentuated by Agnetha's incredible vocals. Arguable one of ABBA's best songs.
Hello, have a nice stat of the week and thanks for your first reaction to ABBA songs "The winner takes it all" (1980) is one of the Best Songs by ABBA and the Most sad and emotional too The best lyrics and the greatest performing with the amazing Interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha Fältskog and her soprano voice The lyrics is a fiction abouta divorce, it is not about Their real life, although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences and the realization of the legal divorce in the middle of 1980, even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, at the end of 1978 There is an Official Video with more than 120 millions views in UA-cam, was filmed on July 1980, is a Masterpiece it shows the blonde singer Agnetha alone so sad and remembering happy times, and the others members so nice together, a perfect example of contrast feelings It's the first ABBA vídeo with images in black and white about Their previous history, to introduce us in the context; I think it's their best official video These is a TV special in Germany 1980, it was the first of three songs, follow by another great song "Super Trouper" "The winner takes it all" return ABBA to the Top of the charts, gives ABBA their eighth #1 in UK after almost two years and half Also was the fourth and last Top10 to ABBA in U.S (pick at #8 in 1981) and #1 in US Adult Contemporary too "The winner takes it all" was voted the Best ABBA song by the British fans, and is the favourite ABBA song to the blonde singer Agnetha and now in the new Voyage concerts at London the encore song is... Agnetha for me is the top female vocalist of my lifetime. When i hear better i may update my opinion. But, listening to her again, after soooo many listenings....it just doesn't get better than this. A unique voice. A unique woman.
This is popular music perfection. The Beatles did it time and time again like no other band or music act in history . There were other Pop artists who had a few great ones here and there but really, only Abba and ELO showed any staying power and wrote the really great ones like the Beatles did. Hi dear Madame, this is my favorite song of Abba, I have tears in my eyes every time I listen to it ( you could try "Thank you for the music" and "Happy New Year" in which in found comfort besides the deepness of the harmonies and lyrics). In history, showing his emotions were always seen as a weakness.... I know what I'm saying ; but for me and a lot of people, seeing your honest reaction make feel happy, as a catharsis.... For me, it is a proof of humanism to be so sensitive to this song.... With all my affection, a random gay French guy
I love many of ABBA's songs, like this one, which I particularly like. What I don't understand is how can you be proud of something you didn't create or control? A German would be proud of BMW because the brand is German 🤔 It's strange how some people interpret pride.
It is one of the most special songs for me. I grew up with ABBA and the emotions in their music touched me before I knew enough English to understand the lyrics. I'm happy also many younger people learn to appreciate this and so many other special songs by ABBA, who were one of the greatest bands ever.
Noone can sing this song like Agneta , this is her song !! There is a reason why ABBA is pop royalty ..

Oh yeah ❤❤
I agreed with this until I watched Mazz Murray sing it. Go check it out - she does a great job (she's also Donna in the musical)
