  • See where to cut back old stalks on perennial mealy blue sage (Salvia farinacea) as new growth emerges in late winter. The same technique applies to herbaceous perennials like coneflower. Plus, keep leggy plants blooming in summer with Wildflower Center horticulturist Leslie Uppingham.

Thanks CTG and Leslie! I’ve been pruning as each one of your segments becomes available. Going to use the every other stem prune this summer when my mealy blues become leggy. That seems like a great way to keep the beautiful flowers but encourage fullness🙌

I agree! May be more time consuming but be great to always have those pretty blloms!

Thank you for this video! I pruned my school garden’s mealy blue sage plant a couple of months ago (when it was winter lol)

Thank you for sharing. I just trimmed mine back. And may need to take more off after watching this. This was my first winter with it. It is a gorgeous plant and was blooming in December!
