I am 66, physically disabled and just received my 30 day notice to vacate. I have lived in my apartment for 13 yrs. I have always paid my rent on time and never had a lease violation until this past week. I will have to live in my car as there is a waiting list for senior housing. My violation said that I had an unauthorized individual living in my home. That is an untruthful statement. My adult son stayed at my apartment for 10 days. I am low income but had the permission from the local housing authority to have him visit me. The real truth is that my apartment complex wants to go retail rent. They want to charge $700-$800 a month for rent. They also want to charge $65.00 per month for water payable to the leasing office instead of the local utility company. They also want to charge $16.00 per month for preventive maintenance even when they do nothing for your apartment. The only thing they did for my apartment is 5 years ago they put in a new dishwasher and disposal. The carpet in the living room is 17 years old. The carpet on the stairs and in the bedrooms is 13 years old. The vinyl tile in kitchen and bathrooms is 20 years old which is when these apartments were built. This is a small town in the southern Missouri Ozarks with little employment unless you want to work fast food job. All of the defense contractors left about 10 years ago. Who do they think is going to pay this inflated rent? Because they are greedy I now have to live in my car. Iam an Insulin dependent diabetic. I have to take 5 shots a day to stay alive. How do I keep my insulin cool in my car when the temperature is 85 degrees or higher?

The horror and injustice of it all. The top 1% is reaping up profits and amassing wealth, like its going out of style. But the richest country in the world can afford endless wars but can't afford to take care its most vulnerable citizens.

You could have looked up the the US government spends oner $50 billion a year on the homeless alone. You could have done a simple search and found, "The President's FY2025 budget request proposes $72.6 billion in gross discretionary appropriations for HUD", but you'd rather make it all up.
mildredmartinez, , It's not that the country can't afford it. Republicans control the House, the House controls the tax money & makes the laws. Democrats try, but can't achieve goals to help people when they are a minority in the House & hanging by a thread in the Senate. Republicans will always stand with the wealthy, that's who they think "Makes America Great," not the day-to-day people who do the work & serve them. If you're not wealthy, vote Democrat or regret voting for the alternative. We need a Democratic majority in House & Senate & state legislatures to get anything constructive done for the general public.

I'm a 74-year old divorced father with 2-adult children, 4-adult grand-children, and 2-minor great grand-children all living within 50-miles of me (I no longer drive). Though I used to try and stay in contact on a regular basis via texts or emails (they don't do phone calls), only one granddaughter ever replies (typically once a year at Christmas time). To everyone else I simply don't exist /sigh/
Maybe they can't afford it/are struggling themselves. It's bad pretty much everywhere.
I'm in virtually the same boat as this woman at 61, but my 2 adult children are not financially set themselves, let alone to house me.

@@markhernden9472 , I don't necessarily think it's true that mass shootings don't occur in other Western democracies. I recall when mass killings in public places in the UK were being reported quite regularly, before it started occurring in the U.S. We heard a lot on the news about them happening in other countries until it began happening here so often that it took over the reporting. We don't really get much detailed news about other individual countries unless it's international, like the wars in Ukraine & Israel. Also, there's a big difference in media coverage in other countries compared to the U.S., which is extremely media oriented & undated with investigative reporters. Everything we do is reported internationally, which isn't the case in most other countries where media is more government controlled.
You made some good points here but consider I said "regular" mass shootings and did not infer that they don't happen in other Western democracies. The Gun Violence Archive tracks these events describing a mass shooting as four people killed or injured not counting the shooter. There was over a hundred in the first four months of 2024 in the US. They are exceedingly rare in other societies compared to America. In this digital age, there is no shortage of reporting from other Western democracies, so it's not like we don't hear about them. The difference is that in America, it's just a part of everyday life.
My heart bleeds into compassion for the two people's got killed into Haiti. 💯 those gunmen are evils.💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

So many tornados. We even had some where I live in the mountains. Last one was in the 80s. I grew up in tornados alley and it didn't even phase me but scared the crap out of my husband.

There has only been 2 days this month without tornadoes. I've never seen anything like this before and I have studied meteorology and storm patterns for years and we are in big trouble. The Heat Index is off the charts already this year and it's only May. God Be With Ys All.

2017 when Sacramento started getting gentrified from all of the techies that moved out from the bay to the Sacramento area that’s when you really started senior being pushed out of their home. I seen people that were seniors with all their belongings packed in their car, sitting at the gas station with tears, rolling down their eyes, not knowing where to go, talk about a greedy heartless nation that we live in

Currently, billions are spent to fund a variety of social service programs, such as SNAP. UBI would replace them. There are indirect costs to poverty, including but not limited to health care and policing. UBI would reduce those costs. Finally, the rich people who can afford to attend concerts could pay more taxes to fund UBI.
