    I love your vlogs!!
    When I have a sub I leave a blank "glow" list and "grow" list. I tell them to put students who behave AMAZINGLY on the glow list and students who have a hard time to be put on the grow list. I tell them not every student has to be on a list, only those who do an awesome job, and those who have some growing to do. When I come back, students on the glow list get a prize from our prize box (they typically have to use dojo points for this so it is a real treat for them), students who were on neither list receive 3 dojo points, and students who are on the grow list don't receive those points (they lose 1) and we have a 1:1 conversation about what happened and how they can do better next time. Some of my team-mates make parent contact with students whose name is left for a negative reason, but that seems harsh to me especially if i'm not there to truly know what happened. Before I leave I explain the lists and the rewards to my kids and it has worked really well the last 2 years but I haven't used it yet this year because of covid. Hope this was helpful!

    It could be selective mutism and as someone said it can be anxiety. Have you tried maybe making what you are asking her a game or something that will get her encouraged to work. I work with students that suffer from AUT and we had one student that would not talk to us although mom said she was verbal. We had her for 2 years but within the first year we would observe what she liked and interacted with and little by little we were able to interact with her through the objects to the point where she would become comfortable talking to us eventually. She was still shy but was more verbal and was able to communicate her needs and wants and answer questions.

    I’m a school social worker. In wondering if selective mutism is possible here. I’m not certain, but I am in a similar situation. What has the parent shared about this? Perhaps some other evaluations are needed to see what might be going on. It’s not necessarily refusal. Could be linked with anxiety, so consider not giving consequences. Good luck!

    I am a former classroom teacher who has taught in 1st-5th grade. I am now a reading specialist. I enjoy watching your videos. I read. the comments and I also have had a student who was a selective mute. The student was older so often wrote answers on post it notes. Luckily I used a reading program on the computer so I could get reading info that way. Have you asked the other teachers the student works with to give you suggestions on what to do for the student. That is what I did because it wasn't part of my wheel house. Good luck!

    I was just reading a book to my class about a boy who never spoke. Alvin Ho, he has very bad anxiety.
    I wonder if this occurred in other years, or if it came up because of stress from the pandemic

    Hi Madison! I wanna say I absolutely love your videos! My cousin actually has same thing, she only used to whisper to her friends and she didn’t talk to her teachers or anyone. I also visited her once and she never talked. She only used to talk to her parents and whispered to her friends. I noticed she only communicated with people she felt comfortable with. I definitely recommend looking into it! It might be selective mutism. Her parents changed her school, and she gladly improving and feeling more comfortable. I’m not a teacher so I don’t have much tips but maybe you should ask her parents, give her time, maybe something out or in school is giving her a hard time. It can be hard if the other person doesn’t communicate. If there is a people at the back table with her I recommend you give some time with just her and you. Maybe she doesn’t feel comfortable talking around a group. But honestly, you are doing great! And don’t stress!

    • @breeyawnahinton
      @breeyawnahinton 3 роки тому +3

      The water is cold when you turn it on, so turning it on before you get in gives it time to heat up. It only takes about 1 minute for it to heat up though, so I can't explain the extended periods of time.

    Have you had the counselor speak with your non-verbal student? It can be a sign of trauma. If she is a learning delayed student just keep up the positive reinforcement. Know that some of her responses can be non-verbal. Ask yes/no questoins maybe, so she can head nod as a start.

    Your student reminds me of a second grader we had a couple of years ago that had selective mutism. It can come from anxiety, etc. As the year went on she talked a little bit more, but still not a lot. She sat next to another student that was more talkative and it seemed to help a little bit during group work and such.

    • @madisonleighmaryan
      @madisonleighmaryan  3 роки тому +5

      Hm I do wonder if it’s due to anxiety. I’m not sure how to help her grow out of it 🙁

    • @vickibennett1
      @vickibennett1 3 роки тому +5

      @@madisonleighmaryan I had this growing up, just make her feel safe. Talk to her in private with no one around so she feels there are no “eye and ears” on her. Be carful of your tone towards her and laughing at/with her, she will be very much watching your facial expressions so keep them soft and happy, try not to frown or pull faces when she does or says anything. Act as if she is taking everything personally. She will grow out of it in her own way. Just let her feel safe being who she is, not what everyone wants her to be. She will be taking it all in silently. Would love to keep hearing updates on her in your vlogs

    I have a quiet student, too. She's shy and unsure of herself. Her mom is totally surprised by her quietness because she yells at her big brother all the time at home. However, in school, she doesn't talk much but is slowly volunteering to give answers. She talks a lot to her friends, especially during recess. What has worked for me so far is to have her communicate her answer to her nearby classmate who will then relay that to the class. I congratulate both the quiet student and her classmate for participating. During small group, I have her sit right next to me when she reads (whisper more like) a passage. Her classmates understand her fear of talking aloud in class, so they respect her and don't complain when they can't hear her read.

    • @madisonleighmaryan
      @madisonleighmaryan  3 роки тому +1

      I have totally met students similar to yours, however I don’t think hers is a shy thing, it’s more so like she knows if she doesn’t participate she just gets out of school work. it’s more stubborn than nerves if that makes sense?

But fast forward 16 years, I just graduated from college last month and I have come out of my shell with my shyness and quite frankly college made me come out of my shell.

    Hey Madison! I have come across your videos and I love them! I am a special education paraeducator. Some advice I would give you regarding your student is to develop a one-on-one relationship. I am a one-on-one paraeducator and have been working with my student for the past 3 years. My student started to open up once there was a bond between us. I understand that it is not easy being a teacher and having more than one student. I was hired to work for one specific student but I have honestly taught, influenced, and helped all my students in my class. However, creating that safe space with the student who is having a challenge is what I have learned has helped tremendously. I hope this has helped you!

    Just curious, what’s the point in having Wednesday be virtual if they’re already in school 4 days per week?

    If you tape down saran wrap or foil on the table before the shaving cream it makes it a little easier to clean as long as you make sure the kids don't go outside the tape.
