  • Memorex cassettes aren't as well thought of as the likes of TDK, Maxell, BASF etc
    Sometimes, it's warranted. Other times though they have little gems which are flying "under the radar" and are bargains in the world of ever increasing blank cassette prices.
    Here's a little video that showcases a couple of them.
    CASSETTE DECK USED: Aiwa AD-S950

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who used to love the smell of a freshly unwrapped cassette!
    I can still remember the first blank cassette I bought myself, back in 1978 - a BASF SM C60, with the yellow label, it had a really nice, almost 'sweet' smell!
    In the same way as taking a new vinyl record out of the sleeve, I always gave them a good sniff!

      I'm getting-on, so sniffing glue is out of the question. But if getting a whiff of a tape floats my boat, Well then, I think it's high time I join the Navy.
      ...Who said cassettes can't float? Mine do, when played on my Nakamichi.
      Cheers from America!

    Memorex were great in the 80’s and 90’s. The commercials were awesome back then. Remember when Ella Fitzgerald was in every Memorex commercials? She appeared in every commercial for MRX2 and MRX3 cassettes. There were many Memorex commercials appeared on UA-cam where it brings back some memories. Remember the tag line “Is it live? Or is it Memorex?” and the famous wine glass shattering which was kinda cool. I have so many Memorex cassettes like the dBS, dB Series, HBII, MRX2 and MRX3. The MRX2 and MRX3 that I have are not the best due to the foam pad which has been deteriorated for years. Same goes with the dB Series, MRXI and HBII during the early 1980’s that has the same problem on many early Memorex cassettes from the 70’s, and it does have a special cassette where it opens which was kinda cool where you open the cassette and pull the cassette out of the case and ready to play.

    I don't think I ever saw Memorex tapes other than the Ciré I (which i liked!) being sold in my country during the 90's and 00's. I don't know before that; I've found some from the early eighties in the trash and on a flea market, but they were obviously brought from the USA (were recorded with American radio broadcasts). I bought a couple of SMAT branded SKCs similar to to those Memorex CD2s very cheap in the early 00's, I liked them a lot!

    Memorex played a major role in the history of audio and video media, they created a variety of products and were involved in the creation of PC IBM disc drives as well as a Major player in blank media including CDs (and of course Cassettes) they are also well known for the very famous "Is it live or is it Memorex?" campaign. People may have recorded and played on not very great equipment and then they blamed the tape. This brand should be respected.

    I had never heard of Memorex until UA-cam and the internet. Don't think we ever had Memorex here in NZ. I finally stopped using cassettes around 2007 or 08 but going through my collection there's various brands, the most common being the TDK D (both 60 and 90 minutes), a couple of SKC tapes, a couple of Sony ones, a Maxell, some ancient TEAC ones from the 70's, and a couple of BASF ones.
    From memory, the BASF ones and TDK ones sounded the best.
    EDIT: 5:52, that's identical to the SKC tapes I have a couple of!!! So we didn't get Memorex as such, but we did get them under different brands.

    The Memorex High Bias (later called HBII) was a good high bias tape for recording vinyl, but I dont know how well it would handle recording a CD. In the mid 80's Memorex started using screw shells for all their tapes. If you ever see those HBII's cheap on Ebay give them a try. SKC did sell their own cassettes for a few years here in the USA in the late 80's-early 90's. Their CD90 was a pure chrome tape with a really strong crayon smell. It might have been licensed or a copy of BASF's tape.

    • @wildbilltexas

      After listening to your video again on headphones I'm really impressed with the bass response of the dBS. But I've never seen those shells in the USA. We Memorex fans like to keep their hidden gems a secret, the skc dbs version will have the different reels with more little holes in them and can make awesome recordings on any mid-grade deck, I remember being very surprised at the sound of the dbs with Dolby B and I could play them back in the cheaper decks with the same awesome sound... I hear the later mrx 1's were even better and they even had metal particle type 2's that matched Denon hd8's sound...

    Never had any issues with recording on Memorex of any kind but the MRX1,2 & 3 which I have a lot I ended up transferring the tapes reels into other shells because of the foam pressure pads of the seventies which a lot of them had including my old BASF professional tapes of the same era. Love the FB and DBS from 1984 on wards. The HBII two are great as well. The clown tapes were not bad either and they were popular even into the 90s.

    Avoid the yellow DB ones unless you don't mind taking them apart. What happens on those is that the lubricant or whatever on the plastic film strips inside between the reels and shell gets sticky with age, and causes the tape to bind up inside the shell. You can open the shell and flip them around so the slick side faces out, but it's not really worth it unless it's a 'priceless' recording. The earlier black DB's don't have this problem.

      Are you recording over them with music or just trying to make them blank? If you have a deck with just a static magnet as an erase head (I'm thinking modern decks) then that might be the cause. Decks with a proper electronic erase head won't leave enough remnants to be audible if your record music over them.

    Can you please do a video on why cassette tapes get eaten up in tape players? I am curious on why Memorex tapes get eaten up more than the Maxell, Sony, TDK or BASF cassette tapes do. I notice that the Maxell cassette tapes can get eaten up from fast forwarding them or rewinding them sometimes from once in a while.

    • @buppie2000
      @buppie2000 5 років тому +2

      +blaizejosh. That's just the luck of the draw. If you have tape munching issues it is almost always the deck that needs cleaning, PINCH ROLLERS IN PARTICULAR. Residue on the roller or capstan can get tacky enough to stick to a piece of tape as it makes contact and pulls the tape around itself and out of the cassette. 99% of the time. Qtips and denatured alcohol are your friends!

    Those gawd-awful ubiquitous memorex dbs with the pink and yellow were some of the worst tapes I ever used. Dropout city, noisy, just generally no good (for anything but lofi or voice, etc, anyway). I actually had a couple of old ones from back in the day, and they didn’t hold up well, have actually tossed them bc it seemed they were shedding so much. Interesting to see the type 2’s and other memorex offerings though, I’ve yet to see or try any of those.

    Will it have my old one which has been batttered by a kid me which looked sexy on the shell at least until you looked down on the pad and say oh dear this is a Type 0.
    Nah the model I had was exactly like the blue one underneith but was a Grey Type 1 version Type 0 from their crap no metel cushon 0 range.
    I really liked the look of the grey one until you heard the sound and seen the cushon as well.
    Edit: Hang on my one could be one of the second ones you have not shown yet on the next screen though. lol
    Hopefully they don't sound as droney and warpy as my one did in the days after battering it with no cover on a lot as a kid.
    Ok mine was a good but no frills top of the line gem ones this looks like a good video it's going to get exciting seeing how it sounded before mine got crap and maybe yours did have the head on a metel thing although mine didn't as well which means you might have got a better tape version of my tape anyway if you did haven't got there yet.
    Yep that looks better than my one I remember my one having that glued on head unless it was yet again another different one I had multiple quirky shells some of them even have no pads at all now so I can't remember the damn head other than the one I do remember it being lued on but I still have them.

    I’ve heard horror stories about old memorex MRX3 Oxide cassettes, but I wanted to ask anyway. Anybody got any input on these? I read somewhere that they had foam pressure pads that would rot and the tape didn’t sound very good (high noise floor, poor response). They were manufactured in 1970.

    • @CassetteComeback
      @CassetteComeback  5 років тому +1

      Depends on storage. Yes, this is the case for many, but I have a video with early NOS MRX2 and they work fine. How long they will remain like that now they've been opened...

    • @filip8297
      @filip8297 5 років тому

      @@CassetteComeback I just read that Memorex MRX3 Oxide tends to suffer from disintegrating pressure pads, unfortunately. Since they are sealed shells, you may have to get creative and scrape away the old pad with a Stanley knife, and then insert a piece of the adhesive pad (furniture protector or whatever they are called). They jam so badly that even the strongest tape deck’s, which will never consume tapes, will end-up chewing them up, and spitting them out! Even Tandberg 3014A that has the tightest transport won’t be able to broadcast it well. The result: A broken capstan belt! I read that someone has complained about how MRX3 Oxide has destroyed his Tandberg 3014, and because of that, he had to replace the capstan belt. He also said that it’s a real bitch to change it on those machines due to its four motor drive mechanism complexity and its structure! It takes the whole day to fix it. The mechanism is equally complicated like at eumig up 1000.

      @@CassetteComeback If you look at your DR10, and probably your (dual capstan) Dragon/ZX9? etc - you should see a "tape-pad lifter" which is fitted on to the replay head - effectively your Naks are recording and playing back without a tape pad. Which is why I raise the point. ;o)
      It is also a good test to see if Nakamachi has correctly aligned the heads regarding the plane-to-plane mating up of tape and head. Otherwise the tape will try to roll off and on a bit, creasing the tape. This lack of tape pad use may effectively reduce tape-head wear too?
