This was around 1989/1990, Tyler :) That was when "Come See the Paradise" was filmed in Portland - 4449 was given water-soluble (or removable-by-water) black paint for the movie - you can still see the Daylight colors underneath the temporary paint if you look closely ;) But when 4449 was first in Oaks Park, she was indeed painted black with a white pilot.
7:21-8:27 I loooove that 6 chime whistle.😍 I know Banning Locomotive Works will be offering a kit for a either a 7.25 or 7.5 gauge GS-4 locomotive. When I build mine, I wanna build a whistle that sounds exactly like that SP 6 chime.
@thehellmantrain - This was shot in 1989 - after 4449's trip to California for LAUPT's 50th Anniversary. "Come See The Paradise" was released in 1990, if I'm not mistaken.
@PNWRails - That would be the old SP 6-Chime that she had on the Fireman's side from 1981-1990. The regular whistle (NP 3-Chime) is heard from 8:04-8:25. The SP 6-Chime is again heard from 8:26-8:54.
@rht715 - nope, 1989 (about 15 years after the Freedom Train) - the paint you see on her is water-soluble, which means it could be easily washed off when need be.
@heidihobear Yeah, you can never have too much steam in a movie. Mt Rainier Scenic RR's coaches were also there. They came down to Portland with 2-8-2 #5, which made the trip on its own power.
Which Hancock 3 Chime did 4449 have here? The NP one it wore until 2010 or the SP&S one it had before? 4449 wore the SP&S one to LA that year, but this whistle sounds different. Also, anybody know what SP loco the 6 Chime is off of? It sounds AWESOME. Too bad it got stolen
It may seem blasphemous, but I actually like the way she looks here. It shows a part of her history that we may not necessarily want to remember, when she was being phased out by a forward-thinking railroad management, long after she outlived her usefulness as a passenger locomotive, but still clinged to life hauling mail trains and commuters, and the occasional excursion. This is just as legitimate of an appearance as the way she looks now with the single-beam headlight and forward-mounted number boards. She and her sisters spent just as much, if not more time looking like this, as they did looking as she does now, with a fresh coat of paint and all her pre-war detailing.
Thank you for uploading this rare footage. That's a once in a lifetime catch. Also, that SP 6 Chime never sounded better. Would it be alright if I used a sound clip from this video to make a whistle for Train Simulator 2019? It would be freeware, and I will give you credit.
Um dear god who was there to see that. SP&S 700: THERE ARE CHILDREN HERE! *Sp&s's driver covers the kids eyes* 844: WHAT THE #### THIS PUBLIC. NOT THE SHEDS!
No, that was when it still had the skirting. Here, while filming the movie “Come See The Paradise,” the skirting was removed, just like most of the Daylight locomotives looked after WW2.
with the 4449 all stripped it down it don't looks like my 4458 I used to get three week ends a month to keep steam up in, it was a what they called the stripped down model these engines never had skirts on them, and they were painted a flat black I don't remember how many the southern pacific had I know they had the 4458.that I remember at one time there was the KLAMMOUTH SECTION 1 AND SECOND 2 which met at the Eugene depot for service one came in at 7:20 and the second came in in behind it at 7:40 in the evening and they were serviced. The first second would leave out and the second section would leave twenty minutes later. I used to go down and watch the guys service both engines, that is when I worked on day shift I could do this because I also worked for the southern pacific rail road.my self. those were the days. a Memorie !!!
The all black versions of that late a number were "war babys" The were the last to be built and sadly the first to be scrapped. The 4449 is the only remaining GS-4.

Yeah it looks dirty alright, but I wouldn’t necessarily call them “naked.” As the matter of fact, most locomotives looked like this even after WW2 had ended. Meanwhile, the 4460 never had any skirting to begin with.
this train is famous its been in lots if films and is also the "freedome train"it was painted red wight and blue to respect those that went down in 9 1 1. what a story of a train
That is not true. The real story for the AFT (American Freedom Train) is that in 1973, a train was established, it was for the 200th anniversary of the United States of America. The train was filled with artifacts and important things of the American culture, for instance the Declaration of Independence. The 3 engines that were used where, Texas & Pacific #610 (partially painted red white, and blue) Reading #2101 (numbered #1 and had her running boards painted red for the occasion), and Southern Pacific #4449 (fully painted red, white and blue. Union Pacific #844 (then #8444), had a small role pulling the train with #4449 (it was not painted). Many locos were considered for pulling this train, including #844. The train was to travel around the country, with the 3 engines alternating runs. This amazing run started in the summer of 1975 (June 20th to be exact) and ended on December 31st, 1976, more than a year after it's beginning. Anyone do correct me if my facts are wrong... :)
CN_6218TV after 911 it was painted in red white and blue but did not haul any excursions under the American Freedom Train. It was later returned to orange red and black.
Kourtney Kaine Creeperish Originals said that the AFT was pulled after 9/11. Thats incorrect; the AFT was pulled in '75-'76. You are correct with what you are saying about how she wore the AFT colors after 9/11, I was just correcting their error about the AFT after 9/11...
Creepersh Originals First of all I didn't say it was fake. Second of all I was just showing that you mixed up the fact of #4449 pulling the AFT in '75-'76 and you saying that she pulled the AFT after 9/11. She wore her AFT scheme after 9/11, but she just didn't pull any AFT trains.

7:25 - That's the best that old SP 6-Chime on the fireman's side EVER sounded!
Very rare footage - thanks for uploading! :D
The whistle sounds very similar to what I've heard from a Lionel lionchief Berkshire
I heard it was a CB&Q whistle from a Railfan & Railroad magazine guy...

@ConnecticutProd That's an SP 6 chime from what I can tell. A great whistle.
That's right hyce
The 4449 is still the most beautiful engine ever! Even with all the grime!
YES
That paint reminds me of the mail trains when gs-2, 3, 4, and 6 locomotives pull after loosing their daylight paint
@thehellmantrain - This was shot in 1989 - after 4449's trip to California for LAUPT's 50th Anniversary. "Come See The Paradise" was released in 1990, if I'm not mistaken.
A skirtless 4449. Never thought I'd see this. Love it. Wish they would leave them off for a while.
7:21 my favorite part! Right After the whistle sqeak, the whistle just sounds so good!!!
Thanks to Hollywood we get to see the 4449 become a beater locomotive.

+AshCat Game Southern Pacific 6 chime whistle. 4449 wore it back in the late 80's to early 90's, I believe.
That is a Southern Pacific 5 chime or so I've been told

sounds almost like nkp 765's old whistle!

Thnaks for posting this, I've never seen video from the filming of this movie.
I think the SP 6 Chime is much more melodious and all around better whistle than the SP 3 Chime (GS-4 Whistle).
Very nice loco and video. Thumbs up! :)
