Late 50s early 60s were a great time to be a kid or teenager. Stayed in the Stardust for 2 nights in 58 on our way to California for our big vacation. Mom, me and my brother swam in the big pool all day while dad was in the casino.
Las Vegas (or at least the one we know) was such a young town back then. It was only 12 years before Ben Siegel opened up the first major Casino, the Flamingo there.
Good times ; 67’ dad took us to Vegas , we swam all day, ate steaks (a treat) at night , watched TV late( another treat) , trip to boulder dam with older sisters/ brother all the while dad played the casinos . Mom went to store and packed bologna sandwiches and pop for our adventures to the pool ! Best part we stayed at the Bonanza ranch style hotel with a giant marquee of the Cartwright’s. So cool! The memories!
Would love to time travel back for the weekend, drive there in a baby blue Pontiac convertible, and see Frank in concert at the Sands, then gamble a bit at the Silver Slipper and the Dunes. 🎲🎲 If you need me, am in bungalow #5 at the Flamingo! 😎 🍸🌴
I've driven to Las Vegas from LA and OC over 300 times. The main stretch going down into Primm hasn't changed. I always look at the cars in these types of videos. I own a 1959 Cadillac and a 1955 Cadillac.
First visited LV in 1970 and stayed at Flamingo. It wasn’t the giant behemoth it is today. The casino itself was like a long living room with couches and chairs against the wall. I loved it. And yes you could see the pool area from the coffee shop. Love the old Sands and Sahara also.
@Chucky Gold I’ve stayed at the Mirage and to me it’s just another hotel without 9/6 video poker machines. Started staying at South Point from the time it first opened. Best value in the city. There VP machines are great.
I was one year old back in 58, I may not have been aware of my surroundings back then, But I reckon those times were much better than the crap we have to put up with today.
Thanks for the memories!! My parents would take long weekend vacations to Las Vegas, as we lived in San Diego. Great music too! I think that this was filmed a few years later than 1957. At 0:20 there is a 1959 Ford right behind the large truck, and at 1:56 there is a blue 1959 Buick that is passing beside the camera car. Keep up the good work!!
I lived in Las Vegas from Sep61 to Apr63, Apr65 to Aug66 and Jan71 to Aug72. When I first moved there it was much like the video and I loved living there, the last time I lived there not so much. From Apr86 to Jul93 I had to go there frequently on business, and I couldn't stand the place!
I worked with Buddy Lester at an ad speciality company in Las Vegas in his later years. He was a sales verifier where he spoke to a customer on the phone after they agreed to buy marketing products like pens and keychains with a business name on them. In the above video he was opening act for Frank Sinatra at the Sands and his name is on the marquee when he was a comedian. He also appeared in numerous Jerry Lewis films and Ocean's 11. Basically he was retired from show business when he took the job at the ad specialty company. I was a huge fan but never discussed his previous career with him.

That is not 57.. 59 or 60 at least.. Stardust didnt open till 1958 and there are 59 vehicles in some of the shots.. Still a great video.. Ty for posting.
Vegas is such a throw away town. They have no interest in preserving any of it. How cool would it be to have all those old 50s buildings and sign around today.
casinos are like humans, they are born, they grow up and they die. They are built, they grow and they are demolished. 1957, when the casinos were babies or children xd.
Bugsy Siegel made this happen it was his vision he really was a visionary about the appeal this place would have. He was also a brutal sadistic killer and he got what he deserved. But he sure was right about Las Vegas.

Sinatra at the Sands. It doesn't get more iconic than that.
...right? except when Sammy and Dean are on stage *with* Francis Albert! 🍸
I visited my Air Force buddy who was stationed at Nellis in 1979 and the strip looked just like it did in this footage. What great times.

I was there many memories watching mom throw nickels in the slots dad watching us outside the Golden nugget. 1958!
Thanks Robbie, talk about a "BLAST FROM THE PAST!" I never saw Vegas until much later.

me to stand in open doors for cool air while parents gamble .
Correct observation about the Ford and Buick.

That is one cool video! Love it! 🎲😃
That was barely 10 years after Bugsy opened the Flamingo! And then…BOOM! And the south strip so busy today was just desert! 😀😀
Great views... before the seedy side creeped into Las Vegas
I saw a 59 Ford, Buick and Chevrolet in the street scenes so this is a little bit later than '57, but still neat.
Year 57 model 59... 😅
Now *this* is the Las Vegas I would like to have visited.. not today's..
Check out the original Ocean's Eleven for more vintage Las Vegas footage.
1957 the year my family moved there.
I love you America 🇺🇸

The old teaxco gas station is really cool too see
Ah, the good old days! When Mobsters controlled Las Vegas...
Frank Sinatra's shows were the toughest ticket in town, but I would have been happy to settle for Donald O'Connor

Looks about the same. The slots and strip drinks are a LOT cheaper now....
Fun fact, Viva Las Vegas was released in 1964

And to think all of that is gone. I actually recall going into the Sands hotel in the 90's. I dont think it lasted too much longer after that
The neon cowboy is still there.
I watched them take it down.
@@milt6208 The neon cowboy? I hope not...

Now it’s pure tacky

Reno and an outdoor toilet are better than Vegas.
Too crowded now... TIME TO MOVE!!!!!!!!!

It was much better then.
Now it’s just an overbuilt and obscene monstrosity.
What? You people don't like the mega strip mall that replaced it all?
