- Eight people were believed to have been on the Baltimore bridge when the massive container ship smashed into it in the early hours. Most of the 1.6-mile-long structure collapsed in seconds - sending those on it plunging into the river below.

How are people surprised that when you take out a major support on a bridge, the structure is critically damaged? These ships are huge and travelling at speed. Good grief.

As a USCG Licensed Captain (Retired) myself, NOBODY has asked THE most important questions yet.
1) The Captain Radioed ahead, reported he was having mechanical issues, why were there no tug boats dispatched for assistance?
2) Was the Harbor Pilot onboard at the time of losing power?
3) Were the USCG Rules followed?
4) Was the USGG notified in advance, and what was their response? They had to have a command station at that large port.
There were two Baltimore Harbor pilots onboard. Two tug boats were dispatched immediately but they had no hope of arriving on scene fast enough.
Even if a tug was dispatched, could it have appeared on the scene in 5 mins time and averted this disaster from happening ?

Thanks for your information for us to know. 👍 There should be protection of bridges same as the nearby power line poles in view. Especially protection of a busy US port as many say the serious reasons for at least some barriers like many bridges in less busier water ways.

I don’t understand how people think bridges should be able to withstand everything just because they are part of our every day lives. Planes crash, trains derail, and if huge container ships hit bridges, they will come down or be irrevocably damaged. Making any infrastructure completely resistant to any damage is impossible. I say all of this as someone from Baltimore and who is used to bridges being a part of every day life.
Bigger ships with full loads displaces huge tonnage of water. With this size and load somewhere around 50,000 to 100,000 tons traveling at 6 knots do you think that kind of bridge or any bridge for that matter can withstand the force?

Sure, but they were all still, with sirens on. I also heard that the bridge was blocked off from public access, so in a way, there were no civilian cars on the bridge.

I'm an old autistic man now. The Francis Scott Key Bridge was my baby. As a child in the 1970's I literally watched the Francis Scott Key Bridge be constructed. As a kid my parents took me to swim at "Fort Smallwood Park" beach on Saturday and or Sunday afternoons. I used to rent a 50 cent tire inner-tube lay back and watch the bridge slowly come together with each passing week. I so absolutely and totally loved the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Today as adults my autistic brother drives and he'd take me over the Key bridge by motorcycle or truck as a treat when I felt sad. I could see the Key Bridge from my balcony. It made living here fun. Now its all gone! RIP my dear dear friend! P.S. My condolences to all affected humans.

Seeing cars driving over the bridge at 1:15, and a few moments before the hit the cars stop comming through.

I had a coach in highschool who was terrified of crossing bridges. She drove us to Jacksonville FL and crossed a huge bridge there, she managed her anxiety so well that we did not see her freaking out. I remember wondering how she got such a phobia but now I understand her fear. RIP to all those who perished

@@KededianIt probably wouldn't haven't mattered, those super freighters take almost a mile to slow down and stop, if their power went out like reports say they did, then they also lost steering, the only real possible chance to avoid the bridge. That ship had several thousand shipping containers on it fully loaded, on top of the weight of the ship fully loaded for a global trip. So several hundred thousand tons of mass traveling at 8 knots is a unbelievable amount of force.

If you refer to the multiple vehicles on the middle span, notice the flashing lights. These were service vehicles for the road workers that were clearly acknowledged to be on the bridge. What isn't clear is if civilian vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. That's what the "ongoing investigation" is about (besides finding out what happened of course).

Those belonged to the construction crew working on the bridge. The police were able to stop traffic from going onto the bridge right before the accident.

Skyway Bridge, after it was hit in 1981, now has barriers that can withstand super size containerships. Very few bridges can withstand being rammed by large ships.

There were. That would have been extremely close for them considering the section of bridge that collapsed.
When this bridge was built in 1977, it was designed to withstand the impact of container ships way much smaller than the MV Dali. The bridge replacing this one will definitely be designed to withstand cargo ships probably twice the size of the MV Dali in the future. But all in all, sad to see people died.

When a massive ship hits the main part that supports the structure of the bridge of course it’s going to collapse the entire bridge‘ so devastating….glad they were able to at least stop traffic and at least save more lives that way
There were construction vehicles parked on the bridge at the time. You can see their yellow flashing roof lights prior to the impact.

Well, to be fair, any basic risk engineer would recommend such an action... With such a threat (because those ships are a threat to this kind of structure), contingency plans are required.
It seems that the ships are managed by the port authorities who know the area the best. Logical that they have communication means with the bridge management, especially on such a critical piece of infrastructure. And I don't know how many cas / trucks are on the bridge at peak traffic, but it's easily in the hundreds of vehicles.

There are tug boats. Tugs took the ship from its berth to the channel which is a straight path under the bridge and out of the harbor. From there it should be easy, but the ship had a propulsion problem.

I was told that the bridge was closed for construction but you can clearly see that there was cars and trucks traveling across the Key bridge at the time just before it collapsed. I pray for those affected. I traveled this bridge many times to go to work in the past. 😢 This is horrible! 🙏

You can see regular vehicles driving over the bridge moments before, and you can see vehicles halted on the bridge during the collapse who I assume belonged to the construction workers. The authorities may have had just enough time to block the lanes of traffic, but not enough time to contact the workers.
Why is anyone shocked that the bridge went down so quickly....that barge hit a "main support beam". Even the Titanic sunk, and claims were that it couldn't. The bridge was hit at a critical point.

@@user-eb1bx2ys6uthat ship weighs TONSSSSSSSS and in water, you don’t stop immediately. Even dropping an anchor takes a lot more time than most realize and you need to “set the anchor” too. It isn’t just as easy as it sounds, trust me. And I only had a small 38-foot power boat that I lived on and sailed around for pleasure. If it took us as long as it did to stop and set an anchor, I can only imagine it would take a cargo ship significantly longer.

As we can clearly see from the video, MV Dali lost power at 01:24:32 EST. Watch all the lights go out. The engine probably stopped and she lost steering control. According to its GPS track MV Dali was sailing perfectly up the exit channel at 8.5 knots up until that happened.
After losing power MV Dali drifted out of her lane to the right and started to slow a bit - another solid indicator she lost power. The GPS track clearly shows all of this.
Still, 116,000 tons drifting out of control at over 8 knots. Stopping distance is measured in miles.
Power was regained (lights come back on) at 01:25:31 (no power for a full minute), possibly the emergency generator kicking on. The stack starts billowing thick black smoke at 01:25:43. I suspect they got the engine back on line and threw it into full reverse but none of this is going to help with steering control. Reversing causes the ship to shimmy, cavitation from the single prop and the loss of speed reduce rudder effectiveness - and these things don't exactly turn on a dime anyway. The GPS track shows the ship well out of its lane and slowing further. The ship drops the port anchor to try and slow down further but it’s too late. She hits the piling at 01:28:45 at about 1.5 knots. That might seem slow but 116,000 tons at 1.5 knots is a LOT of energy.
At some point during all of this MV Dali radio’d it was in trouble and the Governor reports they were able to stop traffic getting onto the bridge before the impact. The reports I am seeing are that 2 harbor pilots were on board. Tugs are not required to pass under the bridge and none were present.

if the sea level is too shallow for anchors to work then why isn't there tug boats instead as a precautionary measure. Especially if you're going under a bridge and it acts as a key logistical route that connects half the country all together?
@@sadasasdas8467 - One anchor was never going to stop 116,000 tons of moving mass. It is likely the anchor was dropped to try and effect a change in direction - but all rather too late.

This happened in Australia in 1975 when the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, Tasmania. A bulk ore carrier struck one of the bridge pylons at night after losing power.

8 knots is not that fast, even in a harbor channel-in this case the main ocean access. A certain minimum speed is needed to maintain steering control.
Right now the main blockage is not the ship, unless it sinks, but is the bridge wreckage in the channel.

@LADYG-gl1jx The Ship was in the channel for leaving the harbor, which is between the bridge piers. Reportedly when the ship lost power and hence propulsion and control it was then at the mercy of the momentum it had previously and then the harbor and ocean currents (tides). In the time the crew had available the engine control could not be re-established and the anchor that was dropped could not halt the ships movement in time.

You should indicate when you are playing a clip at not 1x speed. The way you depict how fast the ship was approaching the bridge is very misleading.
You can absolutely see vehicles on the right side of the bridge go down with the bridge. They look like construction vehicles with flashing lights on top.

there was no traffic on the bridge: at -171 seconds moving to the right, at -39 seconds moving to the left, into the crash the last circulating car was out of the bridge's three flights. There were three worker's flashing lights on the middle flight.
A steel bridge that is a fracture critical design that doesn’t have significant pile protection will catastrophically fail by removing just one of the piles holding up the steel bridge.
ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for NOT having massive pile protection in place after similar circumstances of hitting and removing just one pile destroyed the Florida Sunshine Bridge.
I remember that well and studied the failure in my College engineering classes.
It wasn't traveling _that_ fast. The footage was sped up like crazy. Look at the blinking lights in the background and the cars zipping by. There were at least 30 seconds between traffic being stopped and the bridge collapsing.

they are WAY off with "32,000 ton" - it's gross tonnage is 95,000 tons, maybe 32k when empty, but it has roughly 3,700 containers on board

All you have to do to figure out why the bridge went down is look at the size of the ship that hit it! ... and the cargo it was carrying. It would be very difficult to build any bridge that could withstand that kind of kinetic energy.

Someone doesn't understand how the bridge came down? What structure could possibly withstand that much tonnage moving at 6 knots. That's if it was only 6 knots. Other accounts say up to 12. The bridge would have come down with contact at 1 knot. This bridge was built 50 years ago, before there was any conception of shipping of this size or mass. Its replacement will undoubtedly be a suspension bridge with pylons well clear of the navigation channel, possibly on land
It is not 32,000 ton ship. Its weight to capacity is 116,000 dwt (when fully loaded)

The Mayor is responsible potentially partially for managing this piece of infrastructure. He cannot discuss what happened in the ship, he has no responsibility, no influence, no expertise.
What he can determine is whether they did well according to the bridge safety plans. They seem to have done it.

They should have had respect by not altering the footage. It's such a long video. They had plenty of time to play the footage without speeding it up and claiming "a very rapid speed".

Important question here is why was the vessel doing 8 knotts in port? That's insanely fast for a ship weighing 1000's on tons.
Mind you the video is sped up. Also you need some speed be able to steer such a big ship.
8 knots is slow. There is a minimum speed needed to keep steerage way - control over movement. This ship lost power so lost all control at a bad moment. That video showing it hitting the bridge has been sped up a lot.

I would, the bridge should have been able to resist impact from a large ship. Ships hit things, you only have to search UA-cam to find many many examples, thus the people responsible for the security of that bridge failed wholesale in their duties to protect it with adequate pier impact protection.

I have been told that normally with bridges like this there is built small islands around the main pillars to protect it from an accident like this. Apparently that is not the case here.

I think they were just trying to see if the governor would answer a yes/no question. Which he didn't.
The power failure on the ship could be a result of human error. Someone might have turned off the power button during the electrical maintenance routine. Cruising canals, crossing under bridges, and docking ports are some of the most critical stages when it comes to maneuvering such vessels. Major maintenance work like electrical should not be done during these periods.

Why didn't they learn from the Tampa Bay Sunshine Skyway bridge collapse when a freighter struck that bridge support 30 years ago? When they reconstructed it they put in concrete bumpers around the supports so that a ship can't hit the supports again. Every bridge that spans a shipping channel should be looked at now.
8 knots is not a "rapid speed", it is probaby the speed required for steerage way and to contend with tidal flow.
