I first heard this incredible composition on March 4, 1979, on the radio, and I wish I could remember what radio station I heard it on! This song influenced some events in my life on that day, which led to a wonderful, life-changing decision I made. I was 9 (mid-'70s) when my parents bought an organ with percussions beats and various sounds. I fooled around on it for couple of months until I discovered/composed a sequence that had that repetitive/looping with subtle notes changing. It sounded great to my ears and discovered it was addictive as I played it for many months when sitting at the organ. My parents hated it - of course, they wanted to hear classic/standard music. Unfortunately, I didn't have the argument "Hey, go listen to Steve Reich..."
my dad and i (both drummers) saw a group of musicians practicing this in downtown Orlando in 2011 or 2012 (before some event where we were going to play in the marching band) and he actually thought they were just warming up for a performance later that night! he walked up with his own pair of drumsticks, just about ready to start playing on the bongos they had set up, before i yelled at him that they were actually in the middle of performing a piece by Steve Reich, lol
I saw this piece performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC a long time ago. I still remember some old woman getting up in front of me, throwing her mink stole over her shoulder and marching out of the auditorium. Good riddance. This is one of the more remarkable pieces from the 20th century, from one of it's best composers.
I heard the debut of this piece in New York decades ago and then again in a mesmerizing performance with Laura Dean Dance Company. Being able to watch it again now with its hypnotic precision brought me to tears!
All I can say is...WOW!!! What a brilliant performance of an exquisitely beautiful piece of music. I'm grateful that you shared it with us. Bravo to the performers!
even with the slight mishaps right around 42:35 (and speaking of which, great recovery, btw), this is a great performance of this incredible piece. god bless Steve Reich’s music
When you see this performed, you can appreciate how assiduously difficult it must be to play this amazing and transcendental piece! This moves me more than any traditional Western classical music could dream of. Peace.
So I've seen/heard about 20 different performances of this, and the first act is the best performance I've seen. Sure they took some liberties, but they really pulled them off.
I also have to add that the videography for this piece is awful. Constant fading in and out and superimposing imagery is confusing, distractive, and the worst of 1960's video techniques.
This is lame, I like Reich and I like minimalism, but this is the definition of 'nothing happening', as a 20min piece its okay, but the whole hour, nope.
@@towermoss Yes, and its still lame. Music for 18 musicians is way better and much more interesting, hell even Perlence Subrange 6-36 by Autechre is more interesting than this by a mile.

This piece has a very strong Philip Glass vibe! You rock! He's my idol.
