- Grammostola pulchra, Brazilian Black a new breeding project
This will be a long term project as these are notoriously slow to grow and mature, a very well known spider in the hobby and very sought after too, seldom bred in captivity so the challenge is on .

I have had a Brazilian Black female for 19 years and she is still going strong.Dave is right about them being gentle as I have handled mine many times over the years and have never been bitten.
You need a male I have to there actually wild once I caught in California maybe we can do a friendly trade
I swear Dave, you better live to 104 the hobby needs you for as long as possible!
😂😂😂😂❤
Oooh! The way the eyes sit and the surrounding hairs they look like muppets upclose, ya know - the fangs!
I have been watching you for a year with my grandson who is 6 years old. We love you and your beautiful wife and your knowledge of spiders and their husbandry. I started out with jumping spiders and now have 35 Tarantulas. This spider is my favorite in the hobby by far. I have two. A confirmed male and a unconfirmed one. Thank you Dave, for such a great channel!
That is awesome!
Woohoo! The Brazilian Blacks! I’m watching now.😃
Always a pleasure Dave. Hi Camera Lady.😊
I remember having a Brazilian Black Tarantula once and I absolutely loved 😍 that 🕷️ Spider! She was so calm and never seemed to mind walking up onto my hand whenever I attempted to remove her from her enclosure! One of the most beautiful ❤️ Spiders 🕷️ I've ever had in my collection, docile or not 🚫 and these are, I just thought 🤔 that she was amazing!
They are a beautiful spider. 😊
Love that goober at the end, hanging out of her box like a boss. Good luck with the move, y'all! ✨🕷
These velvety spiders which look like "living toys" are very nice ones 😍
My juvenile G.pulchra female is an absolute treasure, she's always moving around stuff in her enclosure, even things much bigger than her, it's actually impressive how strong they are. I notced as well that heat doesn't do anything for them to moult faster, as my room is rarely below 25-27 C
Thanks to her glossy black abdomen (which kinda looks like a bouffant), I had to name her Elvira. Not a very original name, but still suits her very well xD
The black and silver is beautiful! It will be fascinating to see how they get on!
Stunning spider! They look like velvet. There's just something about a black spider. Such beauty.
I just saw a large wolf spider while watering my garden and thought of how much you and spider lady would appreciate seeing such a healthy spider. I'm okay with them living outside, it's when the XXL ones used to come inside with their babies while my son was still a baby that I wasn't keen on.
Absolutely gorgeous creatures, hard to beat the simple beauty of the Brazilian Black.
One of my favorite spoods! I adore my G. pulchra! She is SO mellow and friendly.
Loved seeing this! I've got my first G. Pulchra coming this week! I can't wait. It's been 37 years since my last T, back in my college days(1987). I'm mainly a gecko keeper/breeder, but I wanted to get another T and so I've got the G. pulchre and a GBB coming next week. Can't wait. I hope you only have to wait until you're 90 to get this project going haha... -Greg
Hi Dave, I had 5 G. pulchra slings that were hatched in 09. Sadly each one passed over the course of many years, with the second to last one passing in early 2022 (February I believe) from what I suspect was a bad molt, and she was female. They grew exceptionally slowly! My final G. pulchra from that batch actually molted full male in mid 2022, around May. He took 13 years! It seemed every spider I had from that clutch just seemed to grow very slow, and 4/5 died for reasons unknown during their lives. My other G. pulchra I bought in 2009 as well, but was born in 2008, seemed to grow at a much more normal rate, reached maturity around 2018, and successfully mated with the 2022 male.
She has not molted yet, but I am afraid the male may have been sterile, as no egg-sac has been produced as of yet. I've been feeding her generously until she decided she was full recently - and I suspect she will molt without producing offspring. I am still hopeful as she did mate with the male about 6 months into her last molt, so there is still some time as she does tend to take about 2 years between molts now.
Anyways, great videos, and glad to see the G. pulchra get some love.
Good luck with your project my friend ❤👍
I think they are beautiful. I love how black they are, with some silvery grey. So fluffy.
Beautiful! I will still be watching 3+ years from now and it'll be fun to see how it all goes. :)
Dave and Mrs Camera Lady! 😁👋🏼☺️
Brilliant spiders have 3 great spider great video guys thank you xxxx
These are my favorite species only second to the C. Veriscolor. They have so much personality and are so rewarding to warch grow out. If anyone can get a successful breeding project started its you Dave!
Let’s hope so ❤
Hi Dave and Camera Lady 💙💕🕷️hope you’re both well and having a great day.
What gorgeous Tarantulas, you had 6 on your table and not a peep from anyone 😊
You’re in it for the long haul Dave (until you’re 104 at least 😂😂)
Lovely camera work Camera Lady too😊
Hope the move is going smoothly for Ya’s!
Take care and have a great new week 💙💕🕷️😘xxx
I feel like a 104. already 😂😂
@@daveslittlebeasties 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Awww. You got some Beauties there. 😍
Thank you! 🤗
Love the Brazilian blacks Dave-Isaac barron
My female is a gorgeous little thing, she takes food well and is in a critter keeper atm and is a little skittish, never in her hide and I just overflow her water dish in the corner when it dries out so I’m swapping it around and she is doing well like that, great video Dave and Camera lady 🫶🕷️
my favorite species i've kept so far! little prone to hiding as smaller slings but now that mine's over the 2" mark, she's often out and about
One of my favorites. So much more stunning in person. My guy is named Buddy- he’s a good boi. ❤
Yay! Finally! wondering why I have not seen any on the channel! I have a male and female pair both around 5 inches too. Very curious spiders always investigate when I do something in their enclosures. Never had a defensive reaction.
They're very calm spiders
Brilliant dave, they are another stunning spider for sure, always look forward to watching out for your updates, I’m hoping there a show or event local to northants soon that I can have a wander around and look up close. I really would like to thank you again for bringing a new insight into something
I hope so too
they are so beautiful :D
btw Dave, I just want to say thank you!
I have my first tarantula since march now it's a balfouri, 3cm in size.
"She" was always quite active and shows up every day and was good at food and 4 weeks ago she just burried away..
..no more seen since then ..
..due to your videos and tips I just stayed calm about it and remembered, she will show up again at least if "she" is hungry.
I did exactly nothing to "her" enclosure, other than fill up the watercup once a week, in case "she" would come out with a big thurst..
and just yesterday she showed up in "her" entrance again, freshly moulted :D
It feels like she doubled in size (of course "she" didn't :'D) and "her" coloring is so saturated.
It was a very interesting experience, and I bet, I would have had worried more about the last couple of weeks without your videos!
now I am hoping, "she" will bring me the moult out, I don't want to "dig" it out from her burrow (and of course I won't if "she" wouldn't bring it)
greetings from germany
Thats awesome so glad you held calm and patient the end result is always worth it ❤👍
Awesome looking spider, would love to get one of this species at some point. Great vid Dave. 😎😉👍
My G.pulchra sling dug out a little ditch, it’s like a meteor hit that area and there’s a sling sat in the middle of the dip like “👀, what do you want?”
Two and a half years ago I got a juvenile female, and now she is a juvenile female😂
😂😂😂
I got a small sling a year n a half ago and it just now molted all black, so... juvi now? Maybe entering juvenile?
Meanwhile, the P. Irminia I got just as small at the same time is pushing 5"
Mines allmost 4 and still tiny 🤦🏼♀️😂
Any update on the g.pulchras?
We an do one soon
Beautiful spiders Dave thank you for that❤
Remind me of ants. They do take many years to grow up. But that’s part of the fun of the hobby. Thank you for sharing.
Oh Dave and Camera Lady…these are breathtaking! That velvety black is just amazing. Really excellent camera work today. Thank you for bringing us up to date on these lovely animals. I am wondering how your Lynx spider project is going? and the move? Are you all packed up and ready to go? Best of luck with that. Y’all take care and stay safe. See you soon! ❤😊 oh yes- Number One!!!!
Unfortunately the lynx spiders did not produce any sacs and I have since given them to a friend while we are moving house , hopefully get some more next year and try again 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties good luck with that. I think you kind of have your hands full right now any way.
I love the Brazilian blacks they have a beautiful sheen to their bodies, I have seen some in not great condition but as always your spiders are stunning, they remind me of my first Volkswagen Golf, I used to shine her up, the car was ten years old but looked stunning! I think this breeding project is going to be epic! 🕸️
Thank you they are very pretty
They're quite a stunning spider.
Hey Dave, I have a G. pulchra who will be 3 years old in August. His name is Panii ❤ and he is the sweetest T ever. He hooked out at about a year and a half. His coloration is more on the grayish/bronze/black side of the color spectrum. You already know how social media is with opinions and comments, but people always question whether or not he is a G. pulchra. His personality and docile temperament are convincing enough for me to know that he is one. His coloration tends to look different under certain camera lighting and angles. People don't fully understand the different colorations between males and females that this species can have and display, so I get it. Panii is the best boy ever...he tolerates me because I'll just go in his den as if I live there with him! 😂 He's currently my only new world T, I have 3 others that are old world, so he keeps me sain when the others wanna show me who they are 😂 Thank you for sharing some love and info about this great species. Amazing video as always 😊
I have a male G. pulchra. He is jet black and not matured yet at almost 5 years old. My female is also jet black.
💚Yeah, my Favourites The Brazilian Black, finally in the Beasties Room 🖤
Absolutely brilliant Dave, they're a fabulous species of spider 🕷, I have a G Pulchra myself it's only a juvenile, but it's fantastic, that's going to be a project well worth doing, anyway Dave another super job by yourself and camera 📷 lady Dave.
I love how much you love spiders..and it is contagious
Thank you 🙏
very interesting project for the beastie room PROFF.. amazing spiders with that silky silvery- black shine from a new moult. magical how they just sit there for show. brilliant information as we expect to help others in the hobby and encouragement . great work CAMERA LADY,, many thanks guys and take care---- hope house move goes with ease.
Is it ever easy moving house 😂👍
My GP is the oldest spider I have but the smallest lol absolutely beautiful. The pet shop had some (got mine from a breeder) they were charging 90 for a 2 cm fuzzling
Great video beautiful tarantulas
New to the hobby and can definitely say getting a g pulchra as my first tarantula was a good way to start. My Persephone is still just a wee thing at 2.5 inches but I'm looking forward to seeing her grow. Already her personality changed after her last molt. Instead of hiding in her burrow she spends almost her time on display. Most frequently rearranging her substrate and dumping things in her water dish like a proper little bulldozer. She's an absolute joy to have around.
These are my favorite! So gorgeous 😍
What beauties!!
Thank you Dave and Camera Lady for this look at a future breeding project.
If I were to get a tarantula, it would be G.pulchra.
Keep up the good works.
Sending love and light from here.
❤❤❤
I have a 2" and 1" spiderlings I have almost had them a year. I really hope one is a female, I love the big fluffy black coat.
What gorgeous Ts I'll be looking forward to pairing vids .
I have a young Brazilian Black and just love their velvety look. They are very easy going and I dont mind them being slow growing, since id want them round a lot longer. I can see myself buying more of them.
Cool video Dave. Thanks for showing how placid these tarantulas can be. Beautiful tarantula indeed
My daughter and I have one they do grow very slow. They are beautiful for sure❤
Definitely not underrated or overrated, the best tarantula. Period.
I bought one as an adult 11 years ago this July, I had heard how long they take to grow. She is still with me and she's my sweetest girl, I'd love to breed her soon. Great video and beautiful animal.
This is a T that is on my wishlist
You see how the female eating that roach didn't even flinch when you took the lid off. Not a care in the world other than enjoying her meal LOL
Finally 🎉😂❤
I’m enjoying your foray to non-arboreal species, my favorites that you’ve shown were arboreal, and I’m hooked. Keep it all coming, Sir and Camera Queen!
Awesome, thank you!❤
Thank you for the video 🎉 I got a G. pulchra sling in 2020. still a small little thing 😂 and atm it’s more brownish than black. Can’t wait for it to grow.
They definitely don't mind being out after they get to bout 2". They like it somewhat dry but boy o boy do they love to drink. Notably drink from their dish more than any others in my experience.
Got my G. Pulchra a week ago, 1" sling...can't wait for it to grow. Just fed it for the 4th of July along with my 1" Brachypelma Boehmei and 1/3" T. Vagans. Very happy relating to and seeing this video.
Love these little guys I own one myself named Anubis lol great video Dave and Camera lady
Dave please consider making the "Thanks" in the drop down available I cant commit to a longer term payment sceme. I really enjoy what you are doing and I think your breeding programs are very important to all creatures Please Keep at it!
Im sorry I dont understand your comment ?
Hahaha I am looking forward to the breeding of these when you're 104 😂 I'll still be watching!
😂😂😂😂👍
stunning wee Beasties
Love pulchra I have 4 Awesome video Dave
Thank you 🙏
Cant wait to see it develop. Long term project. Thanks for the video
good bit of money on that table. :)
fingers crossed Dave and camera Lady are well active in the hobby in 2050ish. :D
Mine is a beautiful little female juvenile. I've had her for a couple of years and she's only moulted a few times in that period. So no surprises there, but what I am amazed by is the fact yours all have their bottlecaps upright. Mine buries hers in the substrate, or otherwise just bulldozes it all over the enclosure. I just give her a new one every now and then, but I've never seen her drink or do anything other than move it around. She also buries her own cork bark hide and uncovers it again. Sometimes she closes herself off inside it when she's preparing for months for a moult, and other times she covers over the entrance to the hide with dirt while she's outside it... I can never understand what she's up to.
Hello great video information Dave
Thank you 🙏
The big girl is breeding ready at this size 😁👍.
Try and give your best as always 👍💪🙏‼️
My girl ate the male directly😢, and the girl of my friend molted out 4 weeks after breeding . The breeding by my friend was very calm, but mine like I said very violent .
Take care and regards from Germany
Jean✌️
I’m sorry.. it’s first thing in the morning for me and I’ve not had my coffee yet. /me rubs her head. What day is it?
My favourite species! 😍
Hi Dave you keep some really good looking spiders! As a result and the fact you have so many creatures and the fact you are moving home ! Please can we have an update on the huntsman and the wandering spiders. I know you are busy but we have not seen them for a while. Sorry if I sound pushy
Once things settle down we will get back to normal ❤👍
Hi Dave,
Grammostola pulchra is a wunderful spider. Yesterday I buy two nice slings. Only the abdomen is still black. I like this spiders very very much because they are so calm and gentle. Have a nice day!
These are on my wishlist :) Love the velvet black on them. Looks fantastic ! Will be looking forward to the eventual breeding sessions.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
They are really nice
Stunning species. Wanted to get one, but they aren't easily available and when they are, they aren't cheap. So i got a G. Pulchripes instead - similarly stunning.
Thank you very much for the comparison. This beautiful species is next on my wish list. Thank you very much for your work and I look forward to hearing more about the project. All the best!
New to the hobby just Had my 1st curly hair but this beautiful spider is on my wish list 🖤
Great to see you branching out to some of the more docile ones (know not necessarily your cup of tea, ha)…seems like goin for one’s worth your while some, also, which is win-win!!
Look forward to day, when n that dim, distant future, you may have successfully bred them (and helped populate the hobby more)!✌️
Ps. That Tripii pairing never did surface…take it you just had to boot that species out the beastie room??!!😅
The tripepii really effect me bad with their hairs so I have moved them on unfortunately
@@daveslittlebeasties ah, fair enough mate
lovely
Hi Dave, love the video !!!! I also have put tougheter a small group of G. Pulchra, on the video and also from my reserch the female must have a colling period during the winter months, to you already have an idea on the temerature you will bring the spider and for how long, this would be a very important info if you cound share your ideas. regards Roby
please keep up on the video, love to look at them in the evening 🕷🕷
Yes they do need to be cooled down we will be experimenting with them next year 👍
another excellent episode guys ❤
Beautiful spiders, I know you should keep handling to a minimum, but their coats look so pettable if that's a word.
They are indeed beautiful spiders! Dave, did you mean these spiders need to go through a type of brumation? Or did you actually mean they will hibernate? I ask, only because I find this topic fascinating! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Respect from Michigan.
Never mind! A quick Google search helped me out. I thought brumation and hibernation were performed differently! Ah, so much to learn!
I love the velvet look they have
😊👍
Thay are gorgeous ❤
@@daveslittlebeasties
They really are !
How old were they when you got them, and did they have that velvet look as slings ?
@@belindalaing7592 All mixed ages
👋Grammostols are my favorite😄.Yours are beautiful💯👍🕷❤
❤❤❤❤
Loved this vid. Thanks Dave. Really, really good to see them next to one another for comparison. The average enthusiast can't do that, so this is where your videos break new ground. My girl's just moulted but ir took exactly one year.. and she/s still only moulted three times in 18 months. Got her May 22 at 5.9cm..3 moults and 18 months later she's only 8,7cm.. yawn
Thank you for sharing that. Have a good night.
I know this is a grammastola purchase video but some 4 months ago you advised me to go ahead and try to pair my Avic Avic and helped me have courage to do this. Thank you Dave I haven't counted just ewls right now but hopefully inside one of your home made incubator pots they will over the next few weeks become 1st nstar and so forth. It looks like they might have been starting to dry out no black or spoiled eggs . Thank you for giving me the encouragement to try.
Thats awesome so glad you had a go and good luck with the nymphs keep us posted on their progress ❤👍
@daveslittlebeasties you know I will thanks again.
Fantastic Dave as always!!! And yes they are a sexy spider and heck yea they take forever I have two slings that I won’t be able to pair till I’m 40 or yea I’m 35 now lol so yea long time away!!!
Amazing video as always, Dave! I'm still surprised by how much I enjoy watching your videos, despite being very scared of spiders lol. I can't deny, some of them are really beautiful, and I guess the really big ones don't scare me as much as the smaller ones? If I find one in my house, I get extremely paranoid, thinking there's more hidden somewhere, you know? Anyway, always a pleasure to see you upload!!
So glad your starting to see the good side to spiders there not really that bad ❤👍
I have 2 Brazilian Blacks slings thank you for this video because I'm always questioning myself if I'm keeping them correctly.
Beauties. Can't wait for mine to put some size on. Got it about 2 months ago 3" and in pre molt. Walled up it's hide and burrowed and haven't seen it since.
Very nice💙💙💙💙
I thought my GP had put on some size in the last year but it's still tiny compared to yours. Are those Braplast tubs? If so, what size?
They are the 3 litre ones
@@daveslittlebeasties Perfect, thanks. Will pick some up as they have a lot more horizontal space than the tubs I'm using now for my terrestrial juvies.
On my wish list
You'd think with all the different colorful spiders like the P. metallica and the T. seladonia available these would be super boring to look at, but there's just something about a silky jet-black G. pulchra. Sadly, it will be years before mine gets to that stage. At the moment it is a 1.5" sling. I think it's in pre-molt since it buried itself away shortly after I acquired it about a month and a half ago. It has an ant farm thing going on right up against the front of the enclosure, so I'll occasionally see it in there drinking a water drop from the condensation, sticking its head in the dirt, or just full-on belly pressed against the front. They're very amusing creatures.
