One of the most important ingredients of The Police Was Miles Copeland at the time, without him there would be no Police or Sting’s success, especially in America. Met Miles on Brand New Day tour @ Royal Albert Hall, he tried to give me the slip on seeing Sting but managed get autograph from both of them. Sorry to say in recent years Sting’s albums have been below par only his concerts are still alive due to his older material, Miles is right the artist have to be steered in the right direction, no point been a yes sir man.
This man comes from the future. He is a sort of encyclopedia of the last 4 or 5 decades. His way to deal with the recording industry revolutionised forever the relationship between executives and artists - for better or worse, and that happened long before the Internet era -. Without a shadow of doubt, one of the best ears in the music industry ever!
Super cool. If it hadn’t been for Miles the Police just wouldn’t have happened in the way it did. Leaving him out of the reunion tour was grossly inappropriate
As bassplayer & primary booker of both of my own trios I've always admired those guys behind the scenes especially Mr. Copeland as much as the musicians .When I met his brother Stewart I forgot to tell him how much I felt Miles was in the same rarified company as Colonel Thom Parker(Elvis),Peter Grant(Led Zeppelin)& Brian Epstein(The Beatles).I read Mile's book which I recommend to anyone who can use a little inspiration to get to the one break that pays off after eating turd sandwiches all day from all the psychos in the so called music industry."Buisness is an art"- Andy Warhol
Amazingly well-researched and throught-provoking interview... one of the most insightful series of questions for a really interesting figure in the world of music & marketing. THanks for all the hard work on this
Australian acts I would have loved to sign? Midnight Oil would definitely be one. Kind of surprised Miles didn't mention them, especially because they had edgy, politically-oriented lyrics and would have fit right in to the IRS roster.
It's not THAT Biden withdrew from Afghanistan, because the Trump administration was ALSO making plans to draw down, as well. So in the objective, BOTH Presidents had the same vision. NO ONE has EVER attempted an invasion of Afghanistan that proved to be successful, & some have even made the case that it was the Soviet attempt that ended up causing the fall of the Soviet Union. It's THE WAY that he withdrew, instantaneously, without considering the consequences of leaving behind all of that intact technology, despite the warnings of the DOD. But, what made it a SIN was the fact that he turned his back on all of those Afghanis who had been our allies during the War who had been promised that they would be evacuated to the States with their families but were left behind to be hunted down & murdered by the current government like dogs. Those were NOT "good decisions for America." They are decisions that put the future security of the US in jeopardy & undermined our future credibility in such a way that those who would have been willing to assist us will think twice before aligning with the untrustworthy, double-dealing US.
Sorry, but I find that the questions are so much longer than the answers and even Miles Copeland seems to be irritated... Next time, keep it short, keep it simple, please !
Finally, I hear WHY Steward came up with that name - the Police. Because cars around the world advertise his band. Not what I thought. My guess was that the band were the "police" for good music, the authority over the cool sound. Not even close

Thank u for bringing us The Police !
Exemplary interview. Keeping it real Ben and I think Miles was comfortable in that Aussie down to earth manner and relevance. Great work. Loved this.

100%. Massive respect for Miles.

Impressive ... Miles Copeland for President..
He could easily have made it to the U.S. Senate. Senator Copeland!

Thank you both so much for this.
Title taken from 'the Fall' song 'two steps forward and also the label he had with Nick Jones 'Step forward records' (faulty products)
This is a very well-executed interview, with many interesting and essential questions.
Great interview. Very well done!
Really well done. Best Miles interview there is and great companion to the book...thanks Ben
insightful! watched the entire thing!
This guy made the police, he was the 4th member of the band.
Great interview!

Split Enz and/or Crowded House would have been a nice fit with IRS.
ah, Stewart's crunchy older brother. Every bit as blunt, but much more gruff. Can imagine the brotherly ... interactions.
Miles is so spot on on Afghanistan. "Bombs Away and we're ok"
it's also a stewart lyric, killer drum part
good interview though. Nice job Ben.

I would like to ask Mr. Copeland if he ever met an Agent by the name Joe Spencer?
great stuff- really useful interview.
It’s almost as if Warren Buffett had a career in music. So much common sense.
Miles sided with sting so he could manage his solo career . Till Sting fired him. Miles didn’t manage the band during the reunion tour
I can’t find any info as to why Miles was not included in the reunion tour .. Have you ever read anything???
@@Goodboy0953 I think the band said there's technically no Police to sell so Miles wasnt needed . I read it somewhere.
@@paulwilk69 thank you so much. I was fortunate enough to meet the band and spent few minutes with Sting and the real star Stewart!!
Miles Copeland turning sellout on conservatives.
Sorry, but I find that the questions are so much longer than the answers and even Miles Copeland seems to be irritated... Next time, keep it short, keep it simple, please !
Please Keep your questions shorter
Wonder what he thinks about the dems and Biden now lol
...... I was thinking exactly the same.
Miles Copeland has no clue about politics.
But then again what bs is politics, so that anybody needs to know anything about?
