I think the California Sober thing is useful for some people, especially those like Demi who had been forced into an All or Nothing mindset. Since she was a poster child for sobriety it sounds like once she started drinking before she instantly switched from sober back to junkie (I hate that term but use it because in that all or nothing mindset that's the word my brain would use and I don't know a replacement). Having that control now seems to be helping her shift that mindset.
Saying that I still hope she works with her team to keep her healthy mindset and that she feels she can confide in them if she starts slipping.

It's the alcoholic brain to me trying to justify usage, but it's just flirting with the issue (in demis case). There's no such thing as California Sober, which is why her saying it is amplified to people. Demi doesn't say she has a sponsor or whatever, just a case worker. I feel like she's relying on herself to know herself, but she's an addict. If she had self control she wouldn't be an addict.

At first I was really worried about this whole smoking weed and drinking in moderation thing she's approaching in her recovery journey. But the more I thought about it and compared it to the alternatives, the more I understood and approved of it. Idk if you've seen the Joe Rogan podcast. They talked about it as well and she explained herself in a really logical way and in a way that I was like "Huh...yeah, that makes sense. Good for her." She also said that this is her journey right now, but that doesn't mean it has to be like that forever. She said something like "If I want to be completely sober one day, fine. If I stay on this path for a long time, fine." so she's not completely excluding the possibility of being 100% sober. But I think this is the best way for her right now. And she's happy and healthy. She has her treatment team that she seems to be really open and honest with and they communicate things pretty well I think. If they approve of it, so am I. She's trying to figure out what works for her and I applaud her for being so honest and open about it.

For me it has been very difficult and at the same time has helped me look forward to achieving that confidence with myself that she has. It has given me hope about my struggles with my mental health and also a representation of my sexuality.
Oh, by the way. When you're ready to chop your head up you'll it and you'll do it and you'll be happy, till then, don't push yourself so hard. (I totally think youll look flawless with your hair cut 😉)

Very late to the party because I only just discovered your videos (Hi!) but I think the approach Demi's talking about is harm reduction. I think the drinking is the most concerning because she's spoken about how she's previously thought "just one drink will be fine" and it wasn't but I also think it's important to consider that part of Demi's problems is that they were so restricted and controlled and that's a massive trigger so telling themselves that they can never drink or smoke weed may be setting Demi up for failure and lead to further relapse on harder substances. In an ideal world, people struggling with addiction could get support and be completely sober but it's not realistic for everyone. We don't know if it will work for Demi, we don't know it won't but at least Demi is being open and honest about it. For some people going cold turkey and never touching any kind of substances ever again is not realistic or plausible right away. But harm reduction is a much better option than full out, untreated addiction. I'm a very big supporter of harm reduction because if people are struggling and they're can't go completely 100% sober right away, then we can at least provide them support and make sure their usage is a safe as it possibly can be until they get to the point where they are ready for sobriety. Loved this reaction!

As someone who is a recovering addict (almost 5 years) i like seeing what other people think of this as well. I am still a smoker and if it wasn't for this beautiful green plant id be skin and bone. Alcohol wasn't my drug of choice but I do see where with moderation if it is something you were dependent on you shouldn't have it around- years ago someone brought my d.o.c to a location where i was and a "just one night" became 2 months. Thank you for posting and sharing your thoughts.

I agree with you on the “drinking in moderation” thing... she says it herself in dancing with the devil: “it’s just a little red wine I’ll be fine” 😬
Also, as a hairstylist, whoever told you that you wouldn’t look good with short hair should be ashamed of themselves!

Yeah but honestly it isn’t our place to say anything about it. She has specific perimeters set with her treatment team. She’s been doing it for 2 years now and it’s had clearly been working well for her. It’s definitely apart of the treatment plan for her to learn not to pick up alcohol or weed when she’s feeling low to rely on it. She’s happy and as long as she’s healthy and happy and not using hard drugs, she should be good

Demi has now been told she is not bi polar she is ADHD and it is said that girls and women are often mis-diagnosed with bi polar because the Hyper part of the ADHD cannot be seen like it can be in boys and men.

The California Sober thing worked really well for me because of the all or nothing concept; for me it took away some of the power of the addiction by making it less of a thing or an event and turned into something more mundane: it's not to say I haven't relapsed since but one or two days is a lot better than two or three years of being inebriated in whatever way was at hand.
My father, on the other hand, can't drink anything more than one light beer without an extreme urge to relapse.
California sober isn't for everyone but there is potential merit hiding in amongst the possible triggers.

On the hair topic, GO FOR IT!!!!
Think about how fast your hair grows. How long would it take it to grow back to a "feminine" length? A few months, maybe a year if you're going really short. So even if you don't like it, hats or headbands and creative hairstyles could mask it until it grows out.
And you may LOVE it but you won't know till you give it a shot.

I learned about aromantics last year (in a Twitch stream 😂) and realized that I'm on that spectrum for sure.
I'm worried about her decision mostly for the same reasons as you. But it's not my choice or place and I hope she does well.
I have substance abusers, former and current, in both sides of my family. My uncle has ruined his mind with constant pot usage for I don't even know how long...over a decade. And he self-medicates with it. He has major psychological issues that need real treatment and therapy... Being high all the time isn't a solution. So I have very strong feelings against Marijuana from this and other family experiences. I know it helps people. But I'm tired of it being touted as completely harmless and safe when it can be abused--that's misleading and potentially dangerous. Hope what I said is not offensive....it's just my personal feelings making it hard to see it as anything positive because I've seen it's dark side and my family has been impacted.
I've been talking to my therapist about Demi's documentary and she thinks Demi's borderline personality disorder. She definitely has mental illness regardless of diagnosis. I'm very suspect of that whole segment for several reasons I won't get into.
That sucks that you haven't been able to get a diagnosis but I'm glad you were able to get DBT! It's so helpful. I'm lucky that my therapy, medications, psychiatrist, and other health care is all covered by my free health insurance even in the US's awful health care system. But I only get all that because I'm unemployed while I'm in school, so L... :/
Cut your hair! Do it! But not if if causes a panic attack. Demi's hair is even shorter now than in the doc. You can take it slowly, go shorter and shorter each time. I personally really don't like extremely short hair but it's not my body or choice. I'm glad she finds it freeing. It reminds me of Britney Spears, when she shaved her head and everyone called her crazy... Now it seems like it's not a big deal in society as much. In the end, it's really stupid to put gender norms on hairstyles and lengths when gender is a madeup social construct anyway.
