I think the shoe is more so a way to get around the world athletics rules so they can sell this shoe and still let the elite racers get the optimal shoe for setting records, rather than actually a real shoe for everyone else

This. The shoe isn't meant for everyone. It's meant for their athletes but to get it legal they have to release it somehow. I'll never own one but I'm excited to see how this impacts the industry

i agree "Any shoe that is introduced to the open retail market after April 30, 2020, may not be used in races unless it has been available for purchase by anyone for at least four months prior to competition. If a shoe does not meet these criteria, it is considered a prototype." -SI quoting the "supershoe rules"

This is a Homologation racing shoe!?
Homologation refers to the process of certifying or approving a product, system, or standard to ensure that it meets specific requirements for performance, quality, or safety. This term is often used in various industries like automotive, telecommunications, and information technology to signify that a product or system has met the standards set by a regulatory body or authority.

A lot of people saying it's to get around the rules but I think it's more sinister than that.
Yes, it gets around the rules, OK, fine. Personally I think the rules are arbitrary but ok they are there.
BUT... Asking $500 US for it... here's what I think is going on there:
In November I think it will still be $500. And loads of people will buy them, especially if Adidas runners do well over marathon season. But the real win for Adidas is that all other Adidas shoes will seem cheap by comparison, but they will feel to some people like they've got just a little of that DNA. It's like when those luxury car brands make something that is basically just a Toyota Corolla but make it $60,000. Then it feels like you're buying a $200,000 for $60,000 but you're actually just buying a Corolla at double the price. I would almost BET that running shoes in 2024 will be even higher, with the bar set by a $500 shoe that only the very rich really bought.

When I first saw this shoe, the 1st thing that came to mind was “wow, they’re taking a page from the auto industry”. There is a “pull” effect on pricing when this price bar is set. As mentioned. Unfortunately ppl are always going to feel that they have to “pay to play”. Along with running races I participate in licensed and sanctioned automotive time trials on race tracks. I came 2nd in my class (15 car class) between a McLaren and a Porsche GT3, whilst driving a Ford Mustang. So with that said, time on feet (or track) will always give the competitor the edge.
I’ve got a bigger issue with the “one marathon” use case. At least my automotive competitors came back in the same vehicles, the next event and for the rest of the season.

    My take:
This limited “beta” drop is priced to generate adizero buzz. Mission accomplished. ‘No coincidence this is coming as many adidas runners are ruling road and track at the moment.
It’s beautiful though. The design is brilliant.
    But…
No one put on parades for adidas for keeping adizero pricing down for decades. The Takumi Sen 6 and 7 were priced at $160 USD. The latest iterations are at $180 USD.
People bought into the hype of higher priced Nike shoes as well as some other new fangled flavor shoes, and here we are.
I won’t pay over $180 USD for running shoes… especially road shoes. I know I’ll beat them down, so I cannot justify paying more for a shoe design-engineered for a runner 3x or 4x my level.
I can cop each of the best adizero lower stacked shoes within my spend limit. I can opt for the Saucony Endorphin Speed for about the same retail price of a Takumi Sen. Do I need more shoe than those offer? No. Will I pay more for other offerings that won’t help make me any better a runner out of curiosity or marketing pressure? No.
The Puma Competitive range is priced to directly compete with adizero. But Puma running has no hype machine to finance at the moment. The Jamaicans aren’t crushing as they did. That’s not stopping the brand from offering ridiculous road shoes at $250 USD.
Moral of the story? We reap what we sow.
    Thanks from covering this, solebrother.
    ✌🏽💙👟

Yes, I believe you are correct if they are to be used in the Berlin marathon.
Is the Nike Alphafly 3 available to the public? Will it be prior to the Berlin marathon? I'm pretty sure Kipchoge will be wearing them. Hmm... are Nike releasing them to the public next week?
I was looking up the rule regarding Development shoes from the World Athletics website. The Berlin Marathon is a World Athletic Series Event which means that Nike must make the Alphafly 3 available for purchase prior to the event. They are cutting it fine aren't they?
And I guess, The Great North Run is not a World Athletic Series Event so that is the reason the Adidas Evo 1 shoe was able to be used as a legal shoe in that event.
      8. Development Shoes
8.1 A Development Shoe cannot be worn by an Athlete in an Applicable Competition without
prior written approval by World Athletics in accordance with Appendix 1 and Appendix
      2.
8.2 If approved, a Development Shoe may be worn by an Athlete for a maximum period of
12 months starting from the date when an Athlete proposes to wear the Development
Shoe for the first time in an Applicable Competition. The Development Shoe can only
be worn within this 12-month period.
      8.3 Development Shoes are:
8.3.1 not required to be made Available for Purchase in accordance with
      Regulation 13; and
8.3.2 not permitted to be worn at the World Athletics Series Events and the

Maybe, but that shoe wouldn't win races probably. This shoe will, and people will see that, and that's great marketing for Adidas. It's like if you are Ferrari and you building a race car. Your priority is winning that race, not making the most affordable or durable car. And if you win enough races and some of the technology of that race car trickles down to other models, people will want to buy those models because of that. And in the case of running shoes, SOME people (that have enough money, that trained the whole year for a single race aiming for a PB), will want to pay even 500$ for just one pair of shoes for just one race if that's the pair that wins so many races. After Adidas, I think all the brands are going to do the same, in fact, because it makes total business sense, IMO.

    • @seanmac80
      @seanmac80 Рік тому +7

@@cristianfcaoshoes don't win races, champ. In terms of sales, none of the elites pay for theirs so it's entirely off the back of general consumers like ourselves. And none of us are turning up in Berlin to beat the big boys, so it's literally an exercise in ego-massaging to wear kicks like this. Better training makes a much greater difference to performance than any pair of shoes ever will.

    • @cristianfcao
      @cristianfcao Рік тому +11

@@seanmac80 Of course shoes win races. If you are an elite athlete but have a mediocre shoe, chances are you are not winning races against other elite athletes who have much better shoes. That's why you had sponsored athletes disguising nike shoes back in 2017-19 as if they were from other brands. Now Adidas can have that edge that Nike used to have back in the early Vaporfly days and other companies will follow them making their extra special model for just one race and not much else. I never said shoes were more important than training. I'm saying this is a GREAT move for Adidas. Their athletes ll win more races (25% less weight in a marathon shoe is a HUGE advantage) and more people will want to buy their shoes: either the absolutely ELITE model that costs 400-500$ for just one race or two, or the cheaper model that has "the same technology" but is more durable.

Thanks Ed, enjoyed that! I think there are two angles to this, one obviously being the hype that you referenced, an outrageous price and limited production to get 'everyone' talking about it.
The second angle I think, is the £400 price is warming us all up to the next iteration of super shoes being over £300, this is a way of helping soften serious runners up for the 'new norm', of £300+ shoes with limited life span. The holy grail for many businesses is to sell 'premium consumables', which is what this appears to be!

I love your opinion on this topic and find the idea of a $500 US dollar single race shoe quite problematic for many reasons. Full disclosure I have paid full price for a pair of the PXS-2, but I find this shoe great for literally every pace I can run and looks like it will hold up for like 1,000 miles. Adidas have made some of my favorite shoes of all time, I am mostly bothered by this raffle for the privilege to buy a GIGA-Niche shoe, type of sales tactic.

Sadly, 400 big uns puts a unwanted barrier between us and them, makes the whole thing less fun to watch and follow.
Adidas are shooting themselves in the foot medium to long term with these Gucci loafers. And that upper has no ballistic value.

My understanding is that it is Lightstrike Pro but it hasn’t gone through the part of the production that removes voids through compression, so it’s like a big fluffy marshmallow. This would explain both why it’s so light and why it would pack up so quickly.
My theory is that this is what was meant for Adios Pro 4 (and perhaps the middle layer of the Prime X Strung 2) but while performance was exceptional it didn’t meet durability standards and this “homologation special” is a place for them to use it (and get it on pro feet)

I think part of releasing these shoes at this price is them testing the appetite of the market to pay an exorbitant premium for top line shoes so they get a gauge for future pricing across the range of their top racing and trading shoes.
It’s great that there is so much development in pushing the limits of these new technologies and breaking records across all distances and terrains. But I think the problem is that a lot of people are attracted to running because it’s always been so accessible to anyone and the barrier to participate, namely money, has always been relatively low compared to many other sports.
But with the rapidly accelerating cost of shoes, clothing, race entry fees, nutrition/gels, coaching/programming, watches, etc, etc it’s starting to become a very expensive sport.
What will the future of the sport look like when it costs over $1000 to go do a local marathon and you have to bin your whole kit at the end of it because all the brands will engineer everything to only last one race.
Will it become just another sport that only those with high incomes/scholarships/sponsorships are able to compete in…

Neither you nor I can know what adidas has spent in developing and manufacturing this shoe, they have to release it to the public in at least limited numbers to get World Athletics approval, they clearly are desperate to reclaim the marathon world record that Nike has held since the arrival of the Vaporfly 4%, and if this shoe somehow enables a trickle down of reduced weight in more “mass market” supershoes, then we all win!

Companies probably have loads of ideas and technology they wouldnt even try to implement because it wouldnt be good for their pockets so its nice to see Adidas doing something out of the norm. The intention in selling the shoes at this price is hype and possibly making some return on investment i assume they have factories and quotas to meet and also having people that got the shoes post on their fancy running instagram builds a yearning for a product you cant get your hands on as well as possibly getting some sort of feedback from "the average runner" ....

Theyre using the same strategy with their early relase before of the ultraboost 1.0, yeezys. Adidas produce them in very limited numbers and asked vloggers to hype them in order to make the price go sky high. I will never support such shoes. Coz if these becomes successful, other brands would follow. Pretty soon, a pair of daily trainers will cost an average of $200 each.
