- 6 year ago Ella Mai released the two biggest songs of her career, that being Boo’d up and Trip that both went #1 on the US rnb charts, and both went multiple times platinum. Boo’d up a top 5 song in the country all genres, amassing over 500 million plays on UA-cam alone, becoming a household song and winning the singer her first Grammy award for best rnb song, also nominated for song of the year. Her song Trip would do well also, creating its own voice, but received some backlash after being covered by rnb singer Jaquees, which fans loved until it was forcefully taken down by her label to fans disproval seeing as that’s a great part of how she found solo success. She’s released 2 albums thus far, her first in 2018 that included her two hit songs and went double platinum. The next came 2 years later that didn’t produce any stand out records and didn’t live up to the hype of her debut album that set such a high standard for her to be rated. It’s been 2 years since that album also, with fans again in dire want for her to release a new project. They say artist are never as hot as their first break out moment in music and Ella Mai is a good example. There’s no doubt she’s a talented and accomplished singer, owner of arguably the biggest award achievement you can get as a musician winning a Grammy in 2019. Ella Mai was the name 6 years ago in female rnb, with fans loving her chill laid back approach to love and her soothing voice that feels like a vibe more than anything, but for these reasons she’s losing that connection as time ticks by and it’s stunting her growth as an artist. I think this one is a little premature. She's still a vibe and has time to grow.
She hasn't fall off at all. She's taking a break just because she's not putting out slutty or trashy music like Srxy Redd or Ice Spice. She's still young and very attractive and has a lot of talent. So I'm sure she'll drop some music next year. She has a 90s R&B soul in her. She might not big as Adele or Dua Lipa since there both from the UK. But let's not write her off cause she's has a lot of growing and learning to do.

She got in because she was marketable based mostly on her aesthetics. She can sing but I never saw it as sustainable in this industry. And then Mustard used her as a breakout artist but didn’t want to put money into her after that one hit.

I loved “Didn’t Say”, “Not Another Love Song”, and “How” from her second album. But I’m never obsessed with artists trying to crank out hits just for the sake of it, as the author alluded to. I just never want talented people to stop making music even if it’s only when they have something to say. When you have a strong enough fanbase and enough music, you can still sell out shows. And yea, Ella is here to make music and stay out the way. I’m not mad at that, either.
I hope she comes back with another project I feel like there has been a resurgence in R&B music that this is the best time to get her name out there again.

I love both her hits Ella Mai "Boo'd Up" and "Trip". I can listen to those song everyday. So she is official to me if she never does nothin else. Her sound is throwback to the 90's and I love it. It also helps that she looks like a couple of girls I went to high school with in the early 90's.

i'm surprised oversaturation wasn't mentioned as a factor. Boo'd up literally became the soundtrcack to my nightmares, it was inescapable. By the time her next single dropped, I didn't want to hear anything else from her.

Her downfall for me was her people blocking Jacquees version of Trip instead of embracing it, making it a remix, and maybe a collab later. Maybe worked with producers n songwriters that would make her step her artistry up. She’s great though!

Sza released ctrl in 2016 and took years to release sos but she was featuring on other popular artists songs & interacted with people building a fan base on social media. She also released singles from sos and promoted them well and made the era last long. Ella and her team had a great rise but she took her foot off the peddle when she could’ve continued to ride the wave. She still however did accomplish great things with her first album that other artists dream of accomplishing so still kudos to her!

I'm a massive fan of hers. Loved both of her albums, but I agree she should be a lot bigger than she is right now. Her laid back image is a vibe and set the tone for the R&B wave that blew up in the late 2010s. But she is not releasing nearly enough music to stay at the top of the game. She doesnt necassarily have to release more projects, but at least get on some features, do interviews, podcasts stay out there and maintain that R&B Princess title that was given so early on.
