  • In #BRIDialogues D-40 we are pleased to be joined by Marina Yue Zhang @ZhangMarina the Associate Professor at the Australia-China Relations Institute @acri_uts, University of Technology Sydney.
Marina is a seasoned academic and commentator specialising in technology, innovation and Australia-China relations. With a diverse background, Zhang earned a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Peking University @PKU1898, an MBA and a Ph.D. from the Australian National University.
Marina joined us on the last day of #COP28 and as countries around the world were struggling to absorb the message and consequences of the final communiqué.
We took a very close look at the changing landscape of mobility, EVs and auto sector, and the politics of China's digital transformation, the phenomenon of "latecomer catch-up in innovation" which many of the senior decision makers and political leaders in the Western capitals are either unfamiliar with or in denial of.
Marina so insightfully unpacks the 'spaghetti effect' of global value chains (GVC), the momentum, and myth of "decoupling" and "de-risking" in ever more intertwined supply chains and why many of these ambitions are hard to substantiate, let alone implement.
With all things electric, #lithium and critical minerals are the heart of future mobility, Zhang reminds us that the biggest challenge is not the shortage of lithium but rather the massive investments required in processing it and substantive environmental footprint of lithium
Supply chain in electric vehicles and lithium-ion battery production will be a contentious ramp, and critical minerals, behove critical dialogue, critical interdependence in solving climate change, demands critical collaboration.
Marina highlights how China’s investments have and will continue to eclipse that of many of the Western and developed economies.
She so eloquently reminded us that China’s commitment to EVs started 15 years ago way back in 2009 in investing heavily in R&D from a mere sales of 5,000 EVs to 6,900,000 almost 7 million a factor of 1,400.
Zhang, the co-author of 'Demystifying China's Innovation Machine: Chaotic Order', has contributed to esteemed journals such as Technological Forecasting & Social Change and Research Policy.
Beyond academia, Zhang provides insightful analyses on China's science and technology geopolitics for various outlets, including The Conversation, The Diplomat and The National Interest, and offers commentary on Australia-China relations for global news platforms like BBC World News, Bloomberg TV and ABC News.
    So much to explore...
The BRI Dialogues provide support and insights for senior executives and decision makers in both private and public sectors, on China and its BRI programme of activities. Our overriding aim is to establish a clearer appreciation of how to ‘COPE’ with China.
COPE in BRI Dialogues means how to deal with Complexities, to capitalise on Opportunities, to understand her return to Power, and brace for the impact of Externalities of China.
So here is D40 (Dialogue 40), sit back and get engaged in the conversation and share your thoughts, comments and insights. We are excited about our series of serious conversations and are grateful to you for giving up some of your valuable time to tune in.
