    My daughter and I replace her headlight bulbs in her 2009 Toyota Yaris. The driver's side requires these steps on some models because the bulb and fuse-box are nearly touching.
    The passenger side has much more room to work in compared to the drivers side, so it is quite possible to replace that one without the removal of the fixture. The drivers side has the fuse box located right behind the bulb, so close it is really hard to get the boot off. You can replace the passenger side after watching the video to understand what is required, and then try working on the drivers side to see if you can get the boot and bulb out without removing the fixture.

    I think it's admirable that you post information intended to help others, but I'll echo several of the other commenters in saying that it really isn't necessary to take your car apart to replace a headlight bulb. I'm a fairly normal-sized western male, 1m80, with typical-sized hands, and I was able to replace both bulbs without taking the car apart or, as suggested by one commenter, moving the fuse box temporarily. It helps to do the one on the right side of the car first, then you become familiar with the principles involved. The one on the left side is much more difficult, but with patience and a lot of fiddling and a lot of swearing it finally works. One thing that I haven't seen noted elsewhere (maybe because it's obvious to everyone but me), is that you can easily see if the bulb is properly positioned by looking into the headlight.

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  2 роки тому

      Hey Rennie, thanks for your comments. You are absolutely right that certain combinations of the Yaris seem to have more room than others between the headlight and fuse-box. Ours had about 1/2" of room, which wasn't enough to get the rubber boot and bulb around the corner. As I mentioned in other comments and the video description, the passenger side does have good access, so it is possible to replace that one without the full removal. It is advisable to replace both sides as a set, so I show both being done. I wasn't comfortable moving the fuse-box around myself, but the bumper comes off easily, and the light fixture can be removed which makes the process easy. If my daughter could do this in 30 minutes with my coaching, I figured it was worth showing others. I DO wish UA-cam would allow for updates to a video after the fact with changes to the 'how-to' aspects.

    Thank you so much for this video. Just saved me a trip to the auto mechanics. I was totally stumped on how to remove the headlight because I didn't know of that third screw on the side just above the tire, as well as the spring that clamped down the light. My 2007 Yaris is my favorite car I've ever owned but they certainly don't make it easy to work on the car with everything so tightly crammed in there, lol.

I'm a gal who had never messed with anything that had to deal with the body, but popping the bumper myself was so satisfying. Thank you for the video! After following the instructions once and learning exactly where everything was on the right side, I was able to change the bulb on the left side without removing the bumper and headlight enclosure on a 2006 4-door Yaris.
    It's possible, but you basically have to disassemble everything once to figure out how to do it without taking the everything apart.

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  3 роки тому +1

      Glad it helped! It is true that if you really know what you are doing, the passenger side is not difficult to change. The driver side, with the fuse box right behind the bulb makes it really hard unless you have very thin hands and really know what you are doing already...

    This video is the only way to do it. Thank you so much for sharing! It may take a little time, but far superior to any videos that tried to accomplish this task without partially removing the bumper are asking the near impossible. I miss the days where you were able to access the bulbs easily, pull them out and replace them in about a minute or two. Oh, well that is what happens when you want smaller, compact cars. There is little space for hands. 😊

    Yeh the Yaris is a great little vehicle. Not too pricey. Great on fuel. Very reliable as well IMO. My 2008 has given me no trouble whatsoever over the past 12 years. I've only ever had to perform routine maintenance like changing the oil, tyres, brake pads on one occasion & a belt or two. Oh yeh... and the headlight bulb. Well, we can only wish they'd made it a little easier to perform a simple light bulb change. But it's all down to the compact design philosophy I suppose. In my old Holden Commodore it was just a matter of reaching around to the back of the headlight module. Plenty of room. No fuss. I don't know whether it was really necessary to make the rear of the Yaris headlight assembly so inaccessible, just to keep things compact. Maybe other manufacturers have done better. But like I said it's a great vehicle. We have to take the good with the bad.

    Your details are so much appreciated - about to do this at home, versus $100 for labour. On a side note, the engineer that designed this should be arrested and charged with cruel and unusual punishment for creating such a complicated process to change something that frequently needs changing.

    Thanks, Dan! And special thanks to Candace Coolio for giving this 60-year-old (NOT mechanically inclined) dude the chutzpah to yank the freakin' bumper halfway off of his Yaris in order to change a lightbulb. Having your daughter do the actual work is a small bit of genius, because it helps boost our confidence that we can do it too.
    The process was actually pretty straightforward, thanks to this video. (And, yes, it's worth the few extra minutes to pull your bumper out if you're replacing the driver-side bulb.)
    One tiny note: there's no need to remove the plastic rivet from the passenger-side wheel well. With the other rivets removed, there's plenty enough play in the bumper to free the driver-side headlamp assembly.

    guys, do a v2 of this video... the working area is in fact quite small, but once you know where the metal tabs are and how to pull them (figured it out from your video details, thanks! :)), you don't really have to remove the light assembly... for me it was 2x 2 minutes job actually (both H4 bulbs) :) cheers...

    I reviewed a few other videos to change my lightbulb and ended up having to remove the light assembly. No you don't have to remove the whole assembly as others have mentioned, but for my '07 yaris, the rubber gasket would not pull off as easily shown in multiple videos and the clip wouldn't easily pop off (the one holding the bulb in place) AND the space is very limited even my smaller hands. Had to use a flat head and dig it up the bottom of the gasket where the bulb sits before it finally came off. Then the clip wouldn't just easily pinch in to release the bulb- had to use flat head as well. This vid was SUPER helpful!! This was def and fun husband and wife job! Thank you!!

Thanks to you, I managed to do this work without a hitch, EXCEPT, you probably should have stressed that the reason you used new push pins is that the old ones really aren't reusable, despite the fact that they're supposed to be. ;-) I got caught out by that, as I didn't have replacements. Still, Toyota dealers can get them in quick and cheap. Thanks again.

    My Scion xA is the same.....actually no surprise as the cars are nearly identical mechanically. The term you're looking for is that the "bumper cover" needs to have it's top clips removed to allow juggling the top portion to swing forward and slightly down to gain better access to the headlights (housing) and bulbs. Same deal.....easy enough to lift the center of the retaining "plugs" ( 2-piece, the center needs to first be lifted "up"...with a screwdriver blade, then the bottom piece pops out. If you simply pop them out from the bottom piece, without first prying up the center, you RISK breaking the whole push-in plug). Need to remove these plugs and THEN look at the ENDS of the bumper cover as they wrap around toward the wheel-well. Then lift back slightly the black plastic inner fender splash guards, and remove the vertical (pointed UP) screws that hold the ends of the bumper cover on,,,one on each end. At this point the whole bumper cover can tilt forward/down like it's on a hinge. Not all that difficult if you know all this....just a bit of a hassle.
