this was the song that got me into eric johnson. the tones album was incredibly influential to my evolution as a guitarist, as a musician. forever props.
jefftherealdrunk Johnson never plays anything the same way twice..That's what keeps him inspired..You have to have a really good drummer and bassist to hold it together when a guitarist improvises and plays passages that have a different cadence each time..Lesser musicians can get totally thrown off by that !
La mejor intro instrumental que he escuchado. Natural, creativa, fina, misteriosa, emocionante y hermosa. La energía y la pasión en esta interpretación van mas allá de este mundo. Por siempre mi guitarrista favorito. Gracias por tu música y tu influencia en mi, Eric!!!
This is what I love about EJ. He'll take a song that's already great on the record and add this amazing intro to it. An intro that until he strikes that first repeating chord you have no idea what it's gonna be and then.....BAM!
I have a good audio copy of this version. I always wondered where the synth sound was coming from. Great to see the video now!! Thanks a lot man! A beautiful intro
what kinda pedal would you guys say he's using in the beginning to make the synth sounds? this is an Awesome song, such beauty in the intro, especially that chord at 1:57
OMG this is brilliant! His playing is off the charts on this version. His ability to improvise intros and solos in his songs is amazing.
I've listened to dozens of versions of this song, and he absolutely RIPS on this one! Peak of his powers here...
Of the most unexpected, surprising, and badass intros of all time.
This prelude to Soulful is pure ej tone magic! I had a front row seat for this show at La Zona Rosa in Austin, February 6, 1997.
Right on!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
God of the gods of the guitar
this was the song that got me into eric johnson. the tones album was incredibly influential to my evolution as a guitarist, as a musician. forever props.
He never plays this exactly the same way twice, and the tones... I could listen to this all day
I've really been trying to crack the code on the intro for such a long time. What a masterpiece!

@@SagaTF2 The Intro has been transcribed.
@@ejtonefan Unfortunately for us EJ fans, transcription is a long way from cracking the code.
Do yourself a favor: work on breakdown the intro just by your ear. The advantages you'll achieve, will be countless.
I wish I was born in America instead of Sweden, so i could see him live. Best guitarist ever!
Probably the most expressive, crystal, heavenly, passional, introspective intro that i have ever seen in my entire life !!!!!
I LOVE YOU ERIC !!!!!!
Even with grainy video and bad audio.... this IS spectacular. Looks like Rosco Beck on bass.
I've been following EJ for twenty years now and dare I say it...I think he's getting even better. His playing is other worldy.
La mejor intro instrumental que he escuchado. Natural, creativa, fina, misteriosa, emocionante y hermosa. La energía y la pasión en esta interpretación van mas allá de este mundo. Por siempre mi guitarrista favorito. Gracias por tu música y tu influencia en mi, Eric!!!
How can 6 people give this a thumbs down? I saw Eric play in 01.' He's brilliant. Actually genius!
Eric is one of my favorite guitarists. He has an awesome blend of chops and melody.
Awesome intro and Soulful Terrain is my favorite Eric Johnson tune. It's great live, too. What an awesome guitar player.
This man is pure magic
Masterfully emotional guitar playing.......
While nothing is perfect, EJ's playing is close to perfect.
Magical, soulful and toneful.
Saturday night, August 16, 2014 I get to see my fave yet again. Yee hah!
Just beautiful

2:30 transition, well played sir, well played. :D
Takes a genius to reproduce this complicated piece on stage.
My hero. 'nuff said.
Loved Eric's 3 amp setup back then. I'm sure it was a pain in the ass to work with, but that sound🤙
I have a good audio copy of this version. I always wondered where the synth sound was coming from. Great to see the video now!! Thanks a lot man!
A beautiful intro
Could you please share it with us ??

Dang that's so amazing haha, You're very lucky. I keep hoping his site will tell us where we can see him sometime soon now that I live in texas again.
Casio PG-380 synth guitar. Never seen Eric use one before. Nicely done intro.
who can rember the first time they put tones on the turntable and hearing this?
In memory of Bob Matthews...
Amazing !!!! 2:59 5:14 5:53 ... wow !!!
If anyone can transcribe this intro or for some reason have their hands on tabs, i would be willing to pay!
If you still need, i can post a video on it.
@@SagaTF2 Yes please! Would be awesome
You can transcribe yourself by watching Eric's finger placement from the video. It's fairly straight forward.
@filliipp Thankfully there is UA-cam until you can see him live! ;)
Not quite allan holdsworth for echo'ee chords but what a soloist & songwriter
As in person.
when was this recorded? man, you have got to share this stuff! pleaaaaaaase

whoever disliked this needs to be burned at the stake.
Brennan temple was arguably his best drummer
