In a move that's been in the works for three years, Mayor Sadiq Khan is delivering on his promise from his 2021 manifesto. The Underground Map is getting a fresh look with revamped names and colors for all six Overground lines. And get this - it's costing a whopping 6.5 million pounds!
But what's in a name, you ask? Well, let's dive into the juicy details. Say goodbye to the old names and hello to the new, meaningful identities:
🦁 Lioness Line: Paying homage to England’s women’s football team and running through Wembley.
🏥 Mildmay Line: Named after the heroic efforts of a charitable hospital in Shoreditch during the Aids crisis.
🌴 Windrush Line: Traversing areas deeply connected to Caribbean communities, like Dalston Junction and West Croydon.
🧵 Weaver Line: Passing through London's textile trade hubs, like Liverpool Street and Spitalfields.
🗳️ Suffragette Line: Celebrating the East End's fight for women’s rights.
🗽 Liberty Line: Reflecting Havering's historical independence and the spirit of London.

Which of these names do you like most?
Liberty sounds cool
Nah, give them the names of areas each line passes through instead of those ridiculous celebratory names.
Overall the names sound a little weird I'd say.
Windrush mostly cus its my one however is cool name
None- political rewriting of history on public services is akin to communist Russia or China.
None it's disgusting they can't find money for wages but spent £6m on renaming lines
What do you mean thay can't find money for wages?
@@DaChaGeeI think this person's confused😂😂
@@DaChaGeehe’s just upset because he’s unemployed and no one will hire him so he blames the government 🤣
@@j_james_01I have to agree with this one, plus 6m isn’t that much for a country like the UK
Tfl has 28,000 staff, if you split the £6.5m between them they each get just £77 for each of the 3 years that was spent on the rebranding. I don't think that £6.5m would do much for the salaries... They're spending at least £980m on salaries as of now just to give you a bit of an insight into amounts.
Personally I think the lioness line should be renamed to the Brunel line
No that’s the Watford DC or Harliquin Line.
Again a total waste of taxpayers money..
What a waste..!
£6.3 million isn't going to do anything to fix any other problem, so we might as well fix one of the overground's
@@Gfynbcyiokbg8710That money can help at least a few people. If your mum was homeless on the street and that little bit of money could help her...
@@DmzirzlofxZzri that money would only be enough to put London's homeless in temporary accommodation for 20 nights, which sounds nice but isn't going to fix any problem.
Plus that £6.3 million is from TfL's budget, and it's not their responsibility to help the homeless.
@@Gfynbcyiokbg8710In that case, use the money to open up more bus routes or something that would actually benefit the population. There's loads of areas without direct access to public transport, specifically where South West London meets Surrey. What will be useful is a replacement for the 400 bus which used to run through Staines towards Ashford, but then got bought out by Diamond so it no longer has the benefits of tfl.
@@Professionalfailure TfL's responsibility is to run buses up to and just across the Greater London border. The current bus 400 never once crosses into Greater London, so why should TfL spend their money on a line that is Surrey County Council's responsibility?
If Surreyites want TfL to run their buses then Surrey CC needs to pay TfL for it.
Meanwhile.. England is in a recession. Well done those in charge - once again shows just how poorly our country is run 😞
but spending money is what stops recessions…
£6.3 million is nothing
Its not in recession anymore
@@DmzirzlofxZzri 2023 ended with a technical recession confirmed for Q3 and Q4. Figures for Q1 2024 are incomplete - likely to be very flat at best.
@@L-mo A growth rate of 0.7 is expected this year. Yes we are in a bad position and I don't except growth to get back to pre covid levels until like 2028 but i'm optimistic for the next few years and every time I look at the corrupt leaders of some nations i'm reminded that while our leaders are incompotent at least some of them do genuinely want thr economy to improve
I'm surprised he didn't name one line after himself.
Well, I suppose the GOBLIN was already named, not because it meant Gospel Oak to Barking, but because someone in the office spited him and called him a money hogging woke goblin.
London woke overground 😂
London Wokerground 💀
Honouring history is woke?
@@TheConfiusany form of knowledge is woke these days. Ignorance is celebrated
He's not honouring history he's trying to win votes for mayor election the guy has ruined london
@CammieRacing well it cost tax payers 6 million for these renames there's better things to buy to honour all these historic moments statues memorials rename buildings etc instead confuse everyone with terrible names for woke overground
Im not too keen on these new names. Many of these lines had perfectly fine names and nicknames before; for example a much better name for the "Weaver line" is the Lea Valley Line, The Gospel Oak to Barking line is affectionately known as the goblin.
I also think the East London line shouldve been called the Brunel Line and remained a shade of orange, given it was built using the Thames tunnel by Brunel and was the orange Tube Line before it became a part of thr Overground.
Agreed. This actually makes sense!
Absolute nonsense
6.5 million? Maybe look at homelessness instead?
Why? When you can make it illegal to have a tent pitched in communal areas instead and then arrest homeless people instead...
6.5 million is really cheap for something this size. Also 6.5 mil barely does a dent into the problem
"But what about inclusivity"🤓🤮
Plenty of other things to look at, homelessness is one example. I'm quite away you're not going to solve homelessness with 6.5mil but you can certainly do a lot to help.
I'm not sure why the London underground needs rebranding in the first place? Any ideas?
@@Bicky6066.5 million in this project. Another 6.5 million in another useless project… etc etc. it all adds up. It’s simply just a waste of money that could have been used better else where that’s the point
Would have been better to spend those 6.5Mn on improving dilapidated train infrastructure on Central Line
These names suck, windrush and weaver might sound normal given some time but lioness line is a travesty and liberty line sounds so American it doesnt suit London. Suffy g slaps though.
Suffragists? Yes. Suffragettes? Get fucked.
Liberties were actually areas that were not subject to the same rules as the rest of the country. Only abolished very recently . Very English.
Do u actually know what travesty means? And have u been living under a rock for 2-3 years because the lionesses achieved greatly winning a European Championship and getting
To a world Cup final. Think and research before you speak next time
Bro u suck and ur sad for saying what u said
Bit dramatic bud. I was well chuffed when I saw the lioness one. Go cry elsewhere.
Leave them alone and put the money into something more important. Like wages.
More woke bull.
Agreed . Need to fix it by getting a new London mayor
bruh how is reflecting londons identitiy woke
@@xoneqraft they heard "women" and got offended
@@Saismee it’s so funny. They just need to remember the last time the boys brought it home. Oh wait the majority of the population weren’t even alive. It’s the slap the men with an issue with the it deserve. 👌🏻
What do you mean by woke? What does woke mean?
Diversity is our strength 💀💀
Hey here’s an idea why don’t we use the 6.5 million to pay our rail staff instead
How many people do you want to pay with that 6mio. ? Every Train Operator in Metro. London? I'm sure they happy to get a raise of £50(as an one time payment), will change thier whole life
As someone who lives on the soon to be named "windrush" line I think it's pathetic because there are way better things for the money to be spent on and I don't want the tube to be corrupted by wokeness
What's wrong with being woke? It literally just means being aware and accepting of difference, is that a bad thing?
I mean, the tube is mainly untouched by wokeness, as seen by the lack of gay liveries and anything that is "celebratory of other ethnicities, cultures and sexuality"
@@U9_wayIt makes a weak society.
Shitty names to be honest. Hardly any of them actually show their geographical location.
I'll just stick to calling them the proper names:
- Watford DC (Watford)
- Lea Valley Lines (Lea Valley)
- North London Line (Literally goes through North London)
- East London Line (Same thing, plus people are already familiar with it when it had A stocks)
- GOBLIN (Gospel Oak to Barking)
- Romford/Upminster Shuttle (Says it in the name)
What a joke. The Lioness line is quite frankly insulting. The mildmay line is incredibly woke. And the others are so boring and dull. What a waste of the taxpayer’s money!
People who are more mad about the names than the fact this money should have gone to support the homeless or underpaid staff in the public sector are an embarrassment to the country.
@@TheGreenerItGets I never said the money was fine, of course it should have gone towards homelessness or something else but I was complaining about the names. I also did say that it’s a waste of money. The disgrace to this country is Sadiq Khan.
@@AdrenalineRush236 The true disgrace is Rishi and I can't wait to vote him out.
@@TheGreenerItGetsMost people who are mad about the names are train enthusiasts like me and I hate the names because we love the Goblin and not a Suffering Line.
Wow, and it only cost us £1,200 *per hour* for 3 years. That seems like an excellent waste of money.
Are you incapable of doing basic maths? £1200 per hour for 3 years would equal £31 536 000.
In reality its £239.73 per hour for the next 3 years
Please can you sort out knife crime first.
Massive fan of the whole process and the names that have been chosen ☺️
Im surprised Sadiq khan didnt name one "Hamas" line
Fr like he's just ticking off check boxee
I don't get it. Why would he do that?
@@blackfriendlygiant because he lets protesters in London openly wave banners that support Hamas and he does nothing about it.
@@blackfriendlygiantbecuase these names are so left politically and he supports hamas
@@blackfriendlygianthe has a history of supporting terrorists.
They all already had names? It was only 2007 that the umbrella term overground was created. It used to be the north London line, East London line, the goblin etc. many still know them as such.
The old ones better
Confusing though. Have you seen the map?
The woke lines
What do you expect from an EDI mayor
These changes are planned for Late 2024, Khan is getting kicked out in May, so all of this isn’t going to happen anyway…
Yeah, they will.
Contracts would've been signed, and signs printed.
@@johnathanh2660If he’s not re-elected the next mayor will likely veto it. This isn’t popular outside of feds and bugmen.
He really isn't going to be kicked out 😂 He has had an over 20 point lead on most, if not all, major polls in the past couple of months
BIG WASTE OF MONEY.!!!!!! This country is going through a recession and instead of focusing on that these people want to spend millions of pounds on remaining lines 🤡💀.
It would certainly break my heart if Tokyo Metro decided to change the names of its lines.
The Ginza Line is too iconic to have its name changed. After all, Ginza is one of the most expensive and upper-class areas in the world.
Really, why not surprised the UK entered recession
- as a Londoner I love our tube line names, surely, these are most dear in our heritage - this man and his cabal are intent on the malign distortion of our heritage - please ask yourself why ? this is not a rhetorical question - your answer is of the essence, indeed, for we fellow Londoners and our fellow Britons beyond.
What the fuck are you on about?
Assigning some of those historically significant names to Overground lines is weird. When I think “Suffragette”, I don’t think “train”. It does come across as forced.
Or you can just see the area as a relevant one. You decided to be offended over something not offensive, yet want to scream that inclusivity has gone too far. That’s the irony here, you want your opinions catered to.
@@kirstybrown1185
I’m offended? I calmly explained what I thought. You created a baseless narrative about a stranger. I think you’re the one not seeing the irony here.

Its a shame that the rebrands dont use the historical names for the lines, especially as a lot of them give you an idea of where you are or are going.
I don’t know why everyone is so horrified about the price when it costed around 100 million or more for the king’s coronation
Windrush 👍
'Deportation Line' would be a bit more apposite.

Where is Battersea Park on the Overground? I know it’s Rare, but it has to be on there
Really? Does he really think that renovation passes through the changing of names? Really???😳😳😳
The Trams have something similar but with no names. Just different shades of green. Are they going to give those lines names?
Over a million on each name and colour change. I would have done it for half that price
😂 As if
Most of them terrible but some good and nice vid
People are mad as once again the white man is left out and acted like they don’t exist. They got one for black community 2 for women and none for the white man even tho the number of white men that died in both world wars is unimaginable
WHYYYY THEYRE CONFUSING ALREADY WITHOUT RENAMING THEM FOR NO REASON LEAVE THEM ALONE
It'll be better with the renaming. Each line will have a different colour
Where else would they shove political bullshit?
You gotta get everyone to comply with newthink.
I wondered where the congestion charge money goes Khhhhàaaan
Liberty line sounds shit
All the current lines are named after neutral subjects. As soon as they said they were rebranding, I knew it would be some politically charged nonsense.
Why not just call them shithouse 1, shithouse 2 shithouse 3 etc....doesnt matter what there called the place is a cess pit.
so they waste £6.5M just to change 6 lines even though keeping it london overground is easier to use instead of spending it for homeless or something useful
You forgot the A Hole line this is named after Khan
Cause it was really that essential and worth 6.5£mn
Why are people just changing London like first it was Heathrow now the overground :/
What the point of spending millions for new names?? What the problem with the original names !!
Original NAME. One. And it was a mess. That's why it's being split up.
Have you asked the people of London? travel will now become more expensive. but some companies will earn money, perhaps even the right companies.
I like lioness line but seriously it’s 6.5 million getting wasted for no reason but honoring communities
6.3 million is barely anything, and it will make the Overground alot easier to navigate
More people will definitely use it I only know where my local one goes
Waste of Hardworking Taxpayer Money AGAIN ! , Sadiq the Rat could have bought Over 100000 Police officers with that money
Some say he's already bought the whole metro police
Cant update their buses though
Not really what we needed right now, bad timing 🇬🇧😕
What did the women’s football team win ?
So this is.why he introduced ULEZ, so he could fund this?

Wheres the LGBT line ? We need a Transgender line , non binary line too
and no one will use the names. the overground is the overground
Wombling free.
If it not broken.leave it alone
Well it is broken
The name lionness line is not good I prefer calling it the Watford line
The worst names ever
The worst way to spend money
Windrush and Weaver lines are quite good. Mildmay is something I can live with. Lioness is gonna take a while to get used to. Liberty line is more America than English, and Suffragette is just named that at a lazy attempt to be "welcoming" or whatever they're gonna barf out as an excuse. Honestly, rename Liberty and Suffragette, and we have a somewhat good idea. Lioness, I'm a little in the grey area on.
Liberty yeah. Makes no sense but people still being irritated by the word suffragette. Is pathetic at best. They did more than you will ever do and why is it bad they’re acknowledged. How can you promote a football team but not a civil rights movement? What an odd thing to say.
@@kirstybrown1185 I don't hate women or them getting the vote, it's just an odd name for a railway that doesn't really have much to do with them. If they called this the "Man Line" I would still think that'd be stupid. The old names actually sort of described the places in London they took you. It's not that I have an issue with suffrage, it's just not a good name for a railway line and just seems like an attempt to be representing or whatever.
And I'm in the grey area with Lioness Line too, for the simple fact that if the Lionesses ever played a really bad game, that line will just be a meme.
Edit: also they probably will have done more than I ever will, but I'm only 14 so I'm not marking your words just yet in case I do end up doing something (unlikely)
Why does it cost so much $$$
Politicians need private jets and limos, durr.
BRING BACK GOBLIN
Every English person is a goblin.
and they’re also horrible names smh (lioness line and suffragette line in particular, idk a different name for euston to watford junction but a better name for suffragette line would be pankhurst line), only weaver line rolls off the tongue imo

None of them- I don’t see what’s wrong with the old ones to be honest because they’re very distinctive and it also helps as if you’re colourblind, you’re not relying on the colour. I can think of so many ways £6.5 million could be spent and rebranding. The London underground is not one of them doesn’t even make any list. Apart from this is a waste of money.
