It was to protect Tamiya from the crazy girl as the crazy girl is able to do anything dangerous towards Tamiya that would harm her safety, as she hates Tamiya and she's feeling jealously towards her. So, in order to make sure Tamiya is safe since he realised he like her, he decided to lie to the crazy girl about (bad) things he didn't do to the crazy girl (just so that she would be convinced and feel a little better and not try to harm the girl anymore) ever since he decided to step into the room when Arata started to become weak and fall to the ground ever since the Thing the crazy girl added to his coffee (just so that he wouldn't be able to control his body).
Spoiler that will break this comment (sorry you don't have to read it yet lol but if you're curious you can) Masamune ends up with someone else! So he didn't fall for her, and him and Meika became her bestfriends later. And this someone i was talking about is Nino !

This acting is so good!! I think they immitate anime very well. And it is not cringey like some people say. I think they are doing such a good job and bring out a comedy effect as well. It also shows how good the actors are at making expressions and using there voice accordingly (they have beautiful voices and give them a lot of colour) it is much preferable than other dramas where the acting is serious and realistic and easier to do. Sometimes that's what makes it even more cringey. Only otakus and weebs will appreciate this series
It's based off of a Japanese comic called Switch Girl, I used to read it in high school and can confirm this drama is a replica of the comic. They do exaggerate on purpose but that's just part of their character personality, I would say it's pretty rare for an adaption to stick so closely to the original- that's a good thing considering how many stories get ruined by too much adaption change.
I have noticed that Japanese dramas that use Mangas as references always tend to be over-exaggerated like this. There’s other Jdramas that aren’t like this at all. For example, “The Hours of My Life”, “Rich Man Poor Women (2012)”, “Mother (2010)”, “Last Cinderella” and “Jin”. All these dramas are amazing you should check them out.
