@dreamingofbonsai I do indeed dave, it was a few months ago they probably won't have anymore but it's worth a shot . I've also heard of Aldi having japanese maple from time to time 👀👀
Hey Andrew. I’ll let everyone know how it reacts to hard pruning. I’ll have to do root work, and re-pot the tree at the right time, and I’m struggling to determine when that should be. The tree did not go dormant. It seems to like the cool down in the evenings. Dave, ALWAYS check in at the supermarket that sometime sell trees. You might have 20 or so to choose from, and what is more fun than that?? 🤣
Yup. Aldi had a great selection of the olive trees. At Ted's I bought one that was about 3 foot tall for $10 and this is the second winter that it is surviving in the basement for me. I mist it every other day and give it fish water and it is doing just fine. My one from Aldi, I potted it right about 2 days later and it is growing nicely in the basement in the east wing. Yours really took off for you. Try and root some cuttings to see what you can get.
Try putting the cuttings in water for a couple hours, laying flat in the water. That way they get good and hydrated and ready for sticking as a cutting.
Little olive flowers! That is so cool! I'm with you, i'm not a fan of the taste of olives as well. I remember when you did the last video on this one ... I never went out to check my local Aldi. I'm guessing it is out of season now, but maybe I'll check it this weekend just in case to see if they have any trees. Lots of bold/calculated prunes here. I think you made the right calls for the future of the tree. My only thought would be maybe removing one of the two branches that are growing out at the same junction right above the branch with the flowers. It looks it may be bar-branches. I'm wondering if that will create a bulge or swelling over time. But its still a young tree and you've got plenty of time to make more calls on it! Great work!
Thanks Dave. The more I observe upright trees in nature, the more I see so many of the things we try to NOT do in Bonsai. I was seriously considering eliminating the bar branch, but I so want to see how the tree responds before I take that step. Cheers Dave. Enjoy the weekend.
@ that is such an excellent point. You are spot on Steve! Letting the tree tell you where it wants to send out the shoots is a good idea. Enjoy your weekend as well, my friend! Hopefully you and the family are staying warm on chilly northeast days like today!
Cut it back, the more you cut the more it ramifies. You can even defoliate it in spring if the tree is healthy, olives here in South Africa grow like weeds so we have millions. use clip and grow wiring scars very easily
Great pruning and initial styling...Enjoyed the engaging narration and tips/information...I wonder what it will do over the Summer...Thanks for sharing...
Thanks Nate. I was really unsure about how far I could go with it. I think I did ok in the end. Looking forward to a lot of new growth. I think it will come before summer. It seems to love the greenhouse
Great find at Aldi, haven't had one around me in years. I did however, buy an Olive tree for my cousin at a Kroger for $23 that is 6ft tall, though it is the same thickness as your tree. It's currently dormant in an unheated garage zone 6b. Once spring comes I'll be looking to take cuttings. Bald Yeti has a video on his success in rooting olive cuttings, I'm going to try and replicate his method.
Try lipstick Steve. Cheaper and lasts. A natural wax that women use on their lips. I have been using it on all my cuttings inside and outside and it lasts right through the toughest winters.
I’ve given up on standard cut paste. So far nothing has worked as well as rubber cement for me. Email me your address (bonsaisbb@gmail.com) and I will send you a tube of Slime.
Never can tell why a tree dies. Or why 16 trees (and I’m talking about my recent Norfolk Island Pine forest) die. I was so careful, but alas. Crispy trees do not a good forest make. Cheers Dave.
Olives are so nice. In Napa, I think You can still get a huge 1000-year-old Olives that were transported from Europe. When it comes to Olive Bonsai, I know Of no better than Aussie Bonsai Bloke. -www.youtube.com/@SamDoeckeAussiebonsaibloke. He just recently started reposting after about a year-long hiatus following a family tragedy. Good Show Steve, That Olive has a ton of potential.
I do watch Sam @AussieBonsaiBloke. I was scared to do the hard pruning, but if my aftercare is good, I think I got it off to a great start. I like the primary branches, and I can’t wait to see how the next set of branches come out. Thanks as always for your comments Patricia. Cheers
All good prunes in my opinion, excited to see what the tree does next!
Me too. Thanks for watching. My maternal grandfather’s name was Sam Smith.
Off to a good start Steve!!
Channelling my inner Nigel as always!
Yes trifurcating is a work( had to look it up) 😆 looks really good. Always enjoy your pruning
Wow, you looked it up? Thank you. I admire your loyalty. 🙂
@ ll have a very curious mind Steve, 😜
Looks great Steve, mine is doing OK no where near the amount of growth yours has. But it's still alive in the basement window
Oh man you have one from Aldi too, Andrew? Dang I really need to take a drive to Aldi and get into the olive tree club! 😅
@dreamingofbonsai I do indeed dave, it was a few months ago they probably won't have anymore but it's worth a shot . I've also heard of Aldi having japanese maple from time to time 👀👀
@@BuffaloBonsai Oh interesting. I may have to start shopping there more!

@ Haha I love options to choose from for sure! I’ll let you know if I find any. 👍👍
Fearless!!!!!! 😮
I hope to be fearless one day. I just have to get over my fear of fearlessness! 🤣
Flowering for you. Great. Maybe you can get a brush and pollinate the flowers and see if you can get and olives to grow. Now that would be super cool.
I did brush pollinate them, hoping for some olive development. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
Great video! This will take off for you just fine.
Thanks Tom. I think this one has good potential and a formal upright. Thanks for watching. Cheers.
I’m diggin the big chops, brother!
I am having issues with keeping my olive “flowing” as well.
I like the way you’re making her move, good sir
My favorite Bonsai form is the formal upright. I think this one does have good potential. I’ll bring it back when I have more to show ya! Cheers Billy

I would love to see how yours are developing. Many cuttings are on the go in the greenhouse.
Try putting the cuttings in water for a couple hours, laying flat in the water. That way they get good and hydrated and ready for sticking as a cutting.
I have each of the cuttings in water and I’m hoping for a fine Olive forest someday.

Great advice, and it’s advice I asked for, so thank you for watching AND listening. Clip and grow it is!
This one is set up for a nice future 😁
Thanks Carlos. It should grow well. I will update when there’s the first sign of new growth.

Remember to check Aldi in the spring again. We have to see what they will have.
I always do. I ask my wife to scout the supermarkets and report back to me what they have in stock.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai Well, I for one will be back at Aldis, but probably should purchase 2.

I picked up a couple last year but they both died. Not sure why.

What kind of soil are you growing in?
This one is still in its nursery soil, so I’m sure just regular compost
@ thanks! It’s got great growth!
Hi. Mary here, yes that Mary. Would you consider co-ownership of that tree?? Mine has no discernable heartbeat.......................................
Oh dear. Sure we can co-parent this tree, but are you sure yours is deceased? Thanks for pointing me to Aldi back then.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai pretty sure it's gone. I left it outside in my glass porch a little too long. I won't throw it yet.

And I get my olives from Trader Joe’s 😂
In cans, and pre-sliced! Cheers Deep.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai and also in pots, and real good trees at that :)
@ The best I’ve ever scored at Trader Joe’s is some Lithops.
P.S. I gave you a challenge on my last video, part 1.
I no longer have any fish in favor of my Bonsai interests, but I’m anxious to see your Water Sprite Bonsai develop.
