- Why Am I Always Tired? Avoid These 6 Energy Vampires | Exhausted
As we get older, we lose mitochondria, the energy-producing engines in the cells. And because of that, we produce less adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the molecule that provides energy to cells throughout our bodies.
Other causes of fatigue, such as medication side effects or chronic illnesses like depression or heart disease, can make you feel tired or sluggish.
But age- and disease-related factors aren't the only things that suck your energy.
Lifestyle habits also play a part in fatigue.

Thank you. I am too tired to listen to the whole video.
This is odd. Social isolation actually increases my energy. Whenever I'm at work or around people I feel distracted, weak, and scattered, but when I'm by myself I feel abundant and sharp as a razor. When I was young I always wanted to not "miss out" and be with others and fit in, but as I grew up I actually realized that I'm the happiest by myself.
Or with a good dog.
This is probably the only debated thing on the list as well as the least impactful as well as something you cannot entirely control. People can be energy vampires most of the time and are a major distraction to all the other things on this list which give a much more profound energy outcome than some random friendly person. I'd say unless you have a stable, positive relationship with someone, I would in no way depend on others for positive energy because most of the time you'll get the complete opposite.
I guess that a sign on depression.
Getting evaluated by a professional is highly recommended.
You’re probably just introverted and maybe also an empath. Empaths absorb other people’s energy so easily. When they are in a crowded space, they are essentially “feeling” everyone’s energy and mood, which is incredibly draining. When empaths take themselves out of crowds and back into isolation or just in the company of one or two close friends/family, they are able to recharge since they’re not bombarded by everyone else’s energy and moods.
Still doesn't mean you couldn't use some friends
I feel so tired. And I'm tired of being tired
I feel exhausted being around people. I'd rather stay home every day than go out and have to deal with people.

If social isolation is linked to depression then why am i happier when im by myself?
I’m not a doctor or anything, but maybe there is a difference between choosing isolation knowing communication is available as opposed to knowing that you’re social ties are completely severed. Perhaps the latter would induce more genuine feelings of isolation.
Us introverts are a unique species!

Improve Energy
- same time sleep and wake up
- no blue-light or gyming within 2 hours of sleeping
- dont drink coffee 8 hours before sleep
- inactivity sucks away energy - therefore regularly exercise (increase baseline energy)
- stress
- poor diet (vitamins and minerals)
- high sugar foods (spike and crash -> chronic fatigue)
- stay hydrated (~3L of water a day)
- social isolation -> fatigue (connect with real life people)
3L? Bro that's too much water

I get drained easily by people and need lots of time alone afterwards to recharge. I've always been that way. But I've isolated myself so much and I am experience this exactly. It's no longer helping me but hurting me. The trick is finding likeminded people. Good natured people that arent sucking you dry of energy. I still need time to decompress after spending time with others but that's something I've needed is spending time with others. It's very important for my wellbeing. Even as an introvert. People need people and we need community. So it's just finding a balance between those two that I've been exploring. I hope anyone reading this comment finds the solutions to this exhaustion. Its definitely a cocktail of things that can help. Itll take time but you'll get there. Many blessings to you!

Was drinking 2 to 3 cups of caffeine a day (about 400 to 500 mgs) for years. Started getting extremely tired, so I increased my caffeine intake and still tired and being able to have a cup of coffee a half hour before bed and fall asleep right away! Went to my physician who advised me it was caffeine and that caffeine can actually do the reverse and make me tired. Advised me to withdraw from caffeine. Started with a great tasting decaf that was 5mgs per cup. Going from 500 mgs to 5 mgs was a nightmare. Headaches were horrible for the first three days, fourth day it subsided a bit and within a week I felt way better energy was coming back big time. Now I feel terrific and my physician was very pleased! Still drink a cup of decaf in the morning. Didn't realize how caffeine was totally messing up my metabolism. thank you for your video!! :)
Wow, you hit the nail on the head. I’ve just recently got my first full-time job that has me always on the computer and there’s no one else in my department so I, for the majority of work, am by myself. My social interactions have decreased a TON (also because of the pandemic) and I need people, I need that energy. Great video!
So I'll live longer and feel less tired if I spend time around other human beings? I'm not sure it's worth it.

Thank you so much for this!!!! I am a single mom of a 3 year old and I constantly worry about keeping a roof over his head especially with the new covid rules making it hard for daycare to be consistent Etc. I noticed as I was listening do you list all of the factors for being chronically tired that they pretty much run together in a vicious cycle. My body has been telling me what to do to fix this for months, but the confirmation I've gotten from here has caused me to feel more motivated to develop and maintain a consistent healthy routine. I have found that the most important factor for me is early morning exercise. It leads to All Good Things throughout the day. When I had succumbed to being a tired mom it would cause me to fix meals that were fast and not so healthy because I didn't feel like I had the the energy to do otherwise. At first, changing and setting a better routine was very hard to do because you have to force yourself from a place of no energy. but like you said the discomfort is short-lived and the quality of my life especially with my children has more than doubled. In conclusion your advice is life-changing and makes any life transformations I can be going through at any time so much easier to transition successfully.
As a child we used to throw a tantrum when told to take a nap 😭 . Now that I'm older I throw a tantrum if I don't get to take a nap 😊. Funny how things switch. Regular activity is for the young when you get older it could be a health Hazzard 💥.

Me2.. I feel close to God so I never feel alone...
That isolation point has me thinking with what I’ve been experiencing with. As a kid, I always wanted to be a part of the group and mainly the “center of attention” a lot of the time, but as I got older, I’ve became a lot more reserved and more self independent in the way of thriving off my own energy and being to keep myself sane and intact. And only when I am in social interactions or around other people, especially groups of people where I’m kind of “expected” to socialize, a part of me deep down wants to just go and socialize, and have fun and be myself, but another part of me holds me back and creates a kind of conflict within myself that creates a buildup of emotional stress sometimes and I hold it back until I am able to isolate myself to where I can then let it out. That’s the more severe side of it but I mainly feel more drained around other people sometimes unless it’s with one or two other people that I care about or that I can really connect with. But I’m at a point where I’m so mentally drained where I’m not even open enough to having new connections or when I do, I can’t keep up with them and it seems like it’s my fault for not seeming like I care enough or want to actually talk to that person, which I do, but I get so caught up in myself and trying to take care of my priorities that those relationships slip away. Don’t know if anyone else experiences this same kind of thing
I go out to bars and clubs frequently. I find that the days when I'm obsessed with my image or how I'm coming across, my energy is drained in such an endeavor. Humans are a social species, so we understand that there are consequences to breaking social norms (and in the past might've meant isolation from the tribe). So it's deeply embedded in our psyche to put up a front and not let loose. But understand that in doing so you become less charismatic and even worse, physically, emotionally and mentally fatigued
Also, i consider myself a natural introvert. Very metastisized introversion too
You're not alone in this alone thing.
Been experiencing the same exact thing...
Attention sinking can make you as an energy vampire. Energy vamps be wanting attention so bad that they had drain people trying to get it.
Omg!! All this time people kept calling me lazy, because my body can’t perform as well as them. I really thought I let myself down, but it turn out I have too much stress, lack of sleep, poor diet and not enough daily exercise. From now on my life will change forever for the better!! I’m so happy I found this Channel!!! 😍😍😍🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 you got a sub from me!! 🥰thank you so much Dr. Mike!!!

I worked as a Registered Nurse for 17yrs and was always tired, coffee was used every day as a stimulant to get things done. I am now retired and sleep when I'm tired and eat when I'm hungry, and it doesn't matter how hard I try I can not maintain any kind of routine. I think it's from years and years of shift work.

Here about a year later with a pandemic raging, six months of social isolation are really taking a toll on me and much of the nation. It has been difficult living in Texas where the wearing of masks, physical distancing, and even acknowledgment of the threat this virus poses were, until very recently, seldom seen in public. I feel very vulnerable, as I know much of the nation does. The constant low level stress is wearing on us. My wife and I have been taking turns having mild depression.
I consider us to be among the fortunate in that we have good health care, are financially secure, and work to follow health guidelines like the ones you mention. Even then it is becoming more difficult to get good sleep and not be mentally paralyzed by this unfolding calamity. What really concerns me is the huge number of people facing this upheaval without the tools and advantages we have. Our nation faces a looming mental illness epidemic and a surge in avoidable illnesses from alcoholism to diabetes.
Add all that to the emerging understanding of serious COVID sequelae and the likelihood that we face another year with this pandemic and it is obvious our society faces a significant long term burden from this mishandled disease. And then there is the financial cost...
TLDR: Vote as if your life depends on it.

I usually make a video for myself every day if I'm feeling pissed of at something, and this has helped me tremendesly achieve a mental calmness that I've never had. Make sure to take care of your brain, which means actually going to a therapist to talk about your issues, this also applies to the doctor that you have, also make sure to talk to your friends/family because they could be struggling with the same issues that you have.
I think this is still excellent advices and will make sure to prioritize this, Thanks Mike! 😄

Not only informative but entertaining as well! I clicked on this thinking about my dad who complains almost daily about being tired. He ticked off a number of the boxes, including stress, alcohol consumption, frequent urination.....and he is 70 so the mitochondria thing. Also at 70, he is not likely to change much. I can see that he has trouble shifting from a young man's expectations of himself to a senior man's expectations of himself. I feel for him. Wish there was something I could for him. I do try to get him to eat his vegetables and regularly ask him if he is drinking water. :P And I definitely see where I could make improvements for myself here too though. Good information. Thanks Doctor Mike!
Thanks Doc for re-affirming this GREAT advice, wish more people would listen, learn, and get healthier. All the best Sir

I exercise, eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, have social interaction and alone time, as well as take a multivitamin which includes all my vitamins and micronutrients. I'm still tired. I give up
Why are you taking multivitamins? Do you have any vitamin deficiency or are you taking them just because they have become norm and everyone else is taking them?
Sometimes calcium deficiency and lack of vitamin D also cause exhaustion.
In my case, vitamin d and calcium deficiency was the culprit ( as identified by doctor).
@@Goodhealthall2015 I just figured I should, as I know I don't get enough through my diet. At the end of the day, I just make sure to get enough protein for my gains lol. Great tips. People should also get their thyroids checked and see if their vitamin D/iron levels are normal. When my thyroid was out of whack, I felt so tired that I wanted to go back to bed by mid morning. After eating a better diet and getting a Vitamix to make lots of fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies, luckily my TSH levels went back to normal to the point where I don't need medication anymore. Americans eat so much fast food and processed foods but it is no wonder so many are obese and unhealthy, and having issues with fatigue.
What kind of fruits and veggies smoothies did you make? I’m dragging all.day.long. And I’ve been taking Vit D for my deficiency for 6 months but still feeling fatigued.
May I ask if lab tests are needed to for this? If it does, what specific lab tests should I ask for?

Just by making my daily coffee-intake bed-time 3 pm over the past 4 months has increased my energy levels substantially. Going to sleep at about 11 pm I've been waking-up refreshed in the morning. I changed this behavior after complaining to my doctor that I'm tired all the time. She asked me about my coffee intake. I haven't reduced the intake, but just by restricting the timing of the intake reduces caffein's influence in sleep, giving me more sleep-quality. I've also begun taking a higher dosed vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) with my B-supplements. This also helps me to be less active in sleep and my body heals better this way, I feel. My knees feel better in the morning.

Yeah this really explains a lot of the problems I've been having since I got reassigned to my new job assignment. New job is extremely inactive and socially isolated, and I'm stressed as a result of the reassignment. So uh, yeah, that certainly tells me why I'm coming home every night just feeling like I'm completely drained of life.
This is the best scientific explanation I have ever heard. The ATP and mitochondria thing was really wow! School should have taught us the connection of atp/mitochondria to regular life rather than made us memorize it for exams. This is really superb content!
What people don't realise is that most of their depression comes from laying in bed all day, from literally just sitting down doing nothing. It's a crazy reason but this is because as humans we were designed to be proactive, that's why we have arms and legs the way we do, if we were designed to sit down all day we'd be shaped like a tortoise or something lol. So when we do nothing our body basically malfunctions and doesn't act right thus making us randomly feel down. Notice when you've been laying down all day and get up you still feel tired even though you've rested all day, it makes your body malfunction. I just made a video on all this and went in deep check it out and stay blessed 🙏❤

How can i make physical activity if i'm tired the whole time?
That could be insufficient adrenal hormones. In that case you don't want to work yourself. As your body is already "burning out" constantly (struggling/fight or flight mode). And you would need rest. And recovery (pregnenolone - DHEA - hormones even, if your condition was bad long enough to cause a deficiency).
Ha! The irony! Maybe Sometimes fatigue is something you need to give into because your body is actually aching for rest and recovery... Not to be pushed further "invigorated" by exercises. That could cause weight gain! High stress hormones.
Dr. Ray Peat - Google then add the topic concern. Traditional endocrinologist, ahead of his time. ✌️
Drink alot of water. Those sugary drinks make you sleepy and make you crash
Start small and increase volume daily. Like today a set of 5 push ups. Tomorrow 2 sets of 5. The day after that 3 sets. If you can't complete all sets without struggling you don't increase the volume. Goal here is to redirect energy from pointless drain to productive gains. Then you can start working on 6 reps per set. You need to understand that your body/subconscious mind is literally draining energy to *make* you feel bad, while creating a cycle of appetite loss followed by cravings coupled with reliance on mood boosting effects from stimulants.
Thanks! You can present things very well and convincing.
That was a good video. Thank you. Stress plays a huge factor in Urban lives yet we are unaware how severely it effects us including our physical health. Please make a video on this.

Number 6 is actually reverse for me, I'm INFP (MBTI personality). And an empath. I get drained physically and emotionally and mentally from too much socializing. I only need my family on a daily basis. Once a week going to Church is enough social activity to last me the week. And seeing my best friend once in a few months is great. I was always tired in High School. After a day at school, socializing much more than I needed, I would have to take a power nap and isolate myself with my music and my cat till dinner time. It drained me being around all those kids all day.
Yes, you have so well expounded this topic.Thank you.
Hi since Covid appeared I've been teaching online. My workloads have increased so much and I'm just constantly on the laptop either teaching or creating materials. My working hours have changed so I'm now teaching from 4-9:30 5 days a week which means I don't get to see anyone until the weekend. I'm practically working at least 12 hours a day trying to cope with the workloads. Now I'm always so tired and stressed with work.
Some of my colleagues are also feeling the same way here. I got to bed around 1 or 2am after creating more materials. I get up around 10am and I'm so tired and then my day starts again from 11am.
My diet isn't great always as sometimes I don't have time to cook. I don't drink or smoke though.
Even at weekends I'll do some work to try to get ahead for the beginning of the next week.
I've also found teaching online is much more draining than being in a classroom.
Sorry about the sob story but we can't even complain at work otherwise they'll just think I'm not competent.
It's also hard not seeing anyone in the week too.
THANK YOU SO MUCH DOCTOR HANSEN!

A lot of good information in this video.
I follow several independent doctors and listen to their videos carefully. Other doctors have mentioned that eating small meals several times a day with snacks is a bad idea because although it may prevent a glucose “spike“, it keeps your insulin levels elevated. Elevated insulin levels contributes to insulin resistance and of course IR contributes to metabolic syndrome. MS has a cascading negative effect on your health including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity.

05:26 I don't know why taking a burger apart underwater helps lol
I think they bought it at a Dive Thru! 🤣
your vids are awesome!! And very informative. Great spokes person as well. You have talent.
Dr Hansen all of these fit me to a “T”! I tried to explain my issue of excessive tiredness to my PCP and understandingly he attributed it to my depression. I see it is a combination of all of this! I just need to find a way to step out of this and it’s hard as a 74 yr old.
Thank you so much! I’m getting more and more tired everyday. I’m in college and I need energy to get all my work done, but not having energy to do it stresses me out, I stay up later to finish, I get less sleep, so I’m more tired the next day which means I’m slower to finish more work. The cycle repeats. Now I know that managing my stress is the first step and then repairing my sleep schedule can happen and I can feel normal again.
Thanks for this video! I used to feel very tired during the day until I discovered Liquid Gold! Omg…my energy is even and consistent, and lasts through the most challenging times of the day! Try Right Dynamix. ~
Hey Dr Mike, when you act like you're tired, you sound exactly like Napoleon Dynamite LOL I enjoy your videos, so thx.
A year later this video is still relevant to me. Always… thank you De Mike
I don't think I'm physically tired. If something interesting comes up, I will suddenly be full of energy to do whatever I want as long as I want
"get rid of them" - Absolutely true.
OMG! I'm guilty of so much in this video, no wonder I'm tired all the time.
Thank you Sir for a very insightful series of tips.
Will readjust my habits !!
Thank you. 😊
My productivity has increased.
I feel way better.
Found this on Reddit. Excellent info, thanks!

#7 living in Manhattan. Where you are required to be 100% productive 24/7 and adderall is a must to compete with others for a job. The struggle is real!
Portland, Oregon is decently laid back. Just saying!!
You honestly couldn’t pay me to live in New York City. Upstate, maybe. But actually in the city? Shoot me now.
Do many people there use Adderall for a work performance boost?
1. Good Sleep 2. Regular Activity 3. Reduced Stress 4. Healthy Diet 5. FLUIDS (H2O) 6. Social Isolation (real life)
thanks for the simple breakdown!
Not sure you are really a doctor but opening with mockery of symptoms was pretty awesome.
This is good! The ironic thing: it takes energy to prepare the right foods, so you eat processed foods because they're the easiest. Also, I'm retired and live on a shoestring, and healthier foods cost more, the cheaper foods are less healthy. I need to break the cycle though and even focus on changing ONE thing, then hopefully that improvement will help springboard me to work on other changes... I'm really in a rut with conditions causing severe pain and limited mobility, so sometimes I get tired of the pain that comes from pushing myself...Doc, your video had much wisdom and has motivated me to restart working toward changes... Thank you and God bless you!
That might be why I am always tired. I mainly eat processed foods. well I eat mostly healthy microwave meals.
@@gazat4 Yeah, it's hard to break that cycle, but I'm going to try it again!
I am a lazy cook...but since I tried a Keto lifestyle I have reduced the cost and time to prepare and eat...I then found it easy to go to OMAD..one meal a day..and I spend less on food and it is all very much healthier...I guess it depends on what country you are in..In Australia I calculate what it costs for a pound of protein...and that shows me that nutrient dense foods are better value...and cooking a steak is really quick and easy!
Try cooking fresh meals in a slow cooker .it will do the work for you and meals taste delicious!°°°°
