  • The magnificent Minoan palace of Knossos , the center of the Minoan civilisation.
Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and is considered Europe's oldest city. The palace of Knossos was undoubtedly the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture. It appears as a maze of workrooms, living spaces, and storerooms close to a central square. An approximate graphic view of some aspects of Cretan life in the Bronze Age is provided by restorations of the palace's indoor and outdoor murals, as it is also by the decorative motifs of the pottery and the insignia on the seals and sealings.
In the first palace period around 2000 BC the urban area reached a size of up to 18,000 people. In its peak the Palace and the surrounding city boasted a population of 100,000 people shortly after 1700 BC

Respect for history. People should not forget the roads that led them to this day. By analogy, those times were more innovative. Great video.

Quite a modern design, the minoans were ahead of the game, or time travellers.

Always interesting to see a 3D model of Knossos!
Did they really use the peristele in this manner? Because in artifacts it's more common to see single or double pillars, in the middle of beams. Evans even thought that the positioning of the columns had a religious dimension.

Great reconstruction, very interesting to see. I was wondering though, at the beginning of the clip there's a shot of a bridge or walkway to the palace that has arches. I thought that the arch was a later architectural innovation of the Etruscans that was popularized by the Romans.
Were there arches in Bronze Age buildings? I've seen another illustration of the palace that shows the bridge/walkway with the arches so this video isn't the first to depict this feature. Is what I'm looking at even an arch in the traditional Roman sense or is it something else entirely?

I dont know, but, there is actually a bridge from the Bronze age that is still being used in Peloponisos. Its a Mycenae bridge which almost resembles an arch. Look it up.
