  • Another unusual indie game to include on my channel. I ran into this game while looking at different montages of PS4 games to check out. Ironically, though, I'm playing the Nintendo Switch version of this.
This is a platformer from Fat Gem that seems to take after a few SNES and PS1 platformer games, and some of these inspirations get manifested as Easter Eggs that I'm gonna try and find.
    ----------
In this game, you play as Krog. A blue caveman being with a green cross for a single eye. The green light from this eye is a source of his power to brandish a blade as well as heal his wounds.
One time, in his village, his people were suddenly struck by a violent curse by an ancient evil god. Krog, being the strongest of his people, set out on a dangerous and scary quest to hunt down this evil god, slash through all of its horrific minions, and lift his village's curse.
Along the way, he may also find 12 Charms that may aid him on his quest.
    ----------
Decidedly, this game is NOT a Metroidvania. There are branching paths and permanent upgrades to pick up, but progress in the game is still ultimately a straightfoward matter of "Point A to Point B".
Your basic attack is to strike with a green sword, standing crouching, and jumping. You can even slash straight up.
You have a roll, and it's slightly faster than running.
This game also has and outright acknowledges late jumps past running off a ledge. Most gamers will call this a "Coyote Jump".
Lastly, your only source of healing in this game are your own stock of heal. You get each of these per life. You don't refill them until you either die or complete the stage, or get an upgrade that lets you hold more of them at a time.
    ----------
The game both auto-saves and checkpoints at bonfires.
Most importantly, there are 12 Charms in this game that give Krog special perks to how you play the game. They aren't necessary as certain permanent upgrades, you can only equip two at a time, and they can only be equipped at bonfires, as well.
I find the first Charm taking this path at 3:45.
    ----------
You can pick up Coins by smashing open containers and killing enemies, but sometimes the containers will be booby-trapped with BOMBS!
The Coins' only purpose is to use them to pay for 1-UPs with Merchants you'll encounter along the way of each stage. They're usually before a miniboss or a main boss, and each of them only hold two 1-UPs at a time.
Some of these "minibosses" are just ambushes against several enemies that suddenly teleport in to attack you. The annoying thing about this is that the teleporation effects can hurt you!
    ----------
After rushing through the ravaged lands of Stage 1, the main boss here is a giant, fire-breathing dinosaur.
Dodge its fireballs and its magma blasts, and if it lowers its head for a moment, its about to lunge at you for a bite.
