They re-attached his arm but it got badly infected so they had to remove it again. Only reason they were even able to try to save it was because his accident was in a nurse's yard. Now he's known as - THUNDERGOD. They gave him time to do his thing with the drums. Sadly not too long after this lp was released Steve Clarke passed from alcohol medication overdose. For that they brought in Vince. Band has been through a lot

A lot of us were really into Def Leppard in the early 80s, but then we heard Rick lost his arm and we thought that's that. But he reinvented himself and finally This record came out and everybody had to have it because of how much we loved them before I can't even tell you how popular this song was and when the video came out it just shot through the roof.

Rick Allen lost his arm when he was 21. He joined Def Leppard at 15. He told them to get another drummer, but they refused, choosing to stay beside him and wait until he was healed and re-taught himself how to play. He has a special drum kit, in which his left foot pedal would emulate what his left arm could do. He still had PTSD from the accident to this day, and sees drumming as therapeutic.

I guess the same reason he stayed, IS a similar reason why Led Zeppelin quitted after their drummer died. The main reason Alex told It, Love. Without that members of the band they weren' t that band anymore. And we are so greatful It was like that, they weren' t a "made Up product" but Friends playing together.

One arm = still better than most drummers
When he recovered from the car accident that took his arm, the band, instead of asking him if he wanted to continue working with them asked him what he needed to be able to continue. That's the sort of friends everyone needs.

Yes, the drummer Rick Allen only has one arm, he did have both when the band started, but got into a back car accident that threw him out of the car and ripped his arm clean off. He went into a coma and had 4 surgerys trying to reattach it, however nothing worked. When he came to later the first thing he said was "I WILL play drums again"

As I remember - being a teenage drummer obsessed with DefLep back in the day - Shark pedals worked with him to create several pedals that were triggering the same sounds as his snare and toms... If you notice - most snare hits are with the left leg, time keeping on ride is his right arm, bass is the right leg and then he trades off between left leg and right hand for fills..

The album came out in 1987. Rick Allen the drummer was in a car accident just before the album was recorded. He was driving in his Corvette when he crashed and was ejected out and his arm stayed in the car. A drum tech built synthesiser pads to replicate his arm and he used his left foot instead. They carried on making the album while he got used to using the pads before adding his drum playing to the album after.

I'll add two more points. The band members can actually sing (this pointed out by the sound engineer on the record) and one of the few bands of that era to utilize three guitars with no bass guitar. Each guitarist plays potions of the track producing a unique sound. In addition, each guitarist has a specialty. Cullen is technical, Clark was awesome, but sloppy - Joe Elliott's words, not mine - which was okay because that's what made Def Leppard.

The band said that losing an arm made him a better drummer because it slowed him down. When playing live with two arms, he sped every song up. As a side note, Steve Clark, the guitar player with the long blonde hair died a few years later. He had crippling stage fright and drank himself into oblivion before every show. Ha...ironically my wife and I were driving around in the car to get out today, and I had Don't Shoot Shotgun playing and she hadn't heard that song. I quickly told her that Hysteria is an amazing album that doesn't have one bad song. I told her my least favorite is Love Bites...and that's saying a lot considering it was the only #1 on the album. Agree that all the other songs on the album are amazing. I also mentioned all the songs they recorded on the B-sides of singles that ended up on later albums. I even like the other versions they released on later albums...Animal, Armageddon it...etc. She got a laugh off of the "B-sides" comment from tape singles...she's younger than I am. Regardless Pyro, Hysteria, and to a lesser extent Adrenalized were the meat of their amazing years. I do like Promises off Euphoria, and Dangerous off self titled album. They have a lot of great music, but the ones above were the start to finish great albums. Been a Lep fan ever since I put my older sisters copy of Pyromania in the stereo back in 84. Glad they are still together...and still making music!!

They were extremely popular in the US, but didn't have a number one song anywhere else in the world before this album... That includes their home country. As a matter of fact, after recording the album, one of their first appearances was on the Top of the Pops and the other artists said, "aren't you that American band" to them.

Spot on Alex: Having previously played with the band with both arms, drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident in 1984. Docs actually managed to reattach it but he got an infection and it had to be amputated. Record company pushed the band to replace him but they refused and he ended up getting a custom kit made to continue playing with them. He uses four electronic pedals for his left foot to play the pieces he used to play with his left arm. He and the whole band are still great (saw them live again last year).

Hysteria is one of the greatest albums in music history.
Anyone who doesn't own a copy of this is not a legit music fan.
Download, buy, etc, if you for God only knows why reason haven't done so already.
DEF L. was/is so good ( particularly first 4 or 5 albums) that their " off" songs and " extra" songs are better than most bands hits. They stayed true to themselves. They were creative and had fun. Were very talented. And made some of the most bad ass and enjoyable music ever. If you know anyone who hasn't DL'd yet....help them to correct this in their life. A person cannot be their happiest until they have Def Leppard'd.

Seen them play outside in 87 and it was about 90f. They were the last of 4 bands that day and it was like the crowd switched out. It was way over half of the crowd were beautiful women. What a time the 80's were.

I loved Def Leppard for a while, but, I never knew the drummer lost an arm. It's crazy how good he is with that one arm. Also, i feel like i have an old soul, too, considering how much i love older music, movies, books, etc.

I’m a HUGE Def Leppard fan. So this song is on the album “Hysteria” released in 1987. Def Leppard was extremely popular in the United States, especially after the release of their previous album, “Pyromania” in 1983. It took them 4 years to produce “Hysteria” and their producer, Mutt Lange, helped them achieve their sound. He was a perfectionist and often made them redo single phrases of the music because he was so particular. He also produced other great artists such as Shania Twain (whom he married), AC/DC, The Cars, and so many more. The band wanted to release a BUNCH of singles like Michael Jackson did with Thriller and they released SEVEN singles. The album went number one in the US AND the UK and is certified 12X Platinum.

One of my favs of Def Leppard ... I was 17 and damn I still loving it! ❤🎸♥
4:25 On 31 December 1984, drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car crash on the A57 in the hills outside the band's home city of Sheffield. Allen was driving with his Dutch girlfriend, Miriam Barendsen, when his Corvette swerved off the road on a sharp bend and went through a drystone wall. Despite the severity of the accident, Allen was committed to continuing his role as Def Leppard's drummer and realised that he could use his legs to do some of the drumming work previously done with his arms.[34] He then worked with Simmons to design a custom electronic drum kit.

I am having a dope assed day, especially watching you play my favorite songs! When I actually got to see Def Leppard, there is no words for it, it was crazy, and I didn't sleep for 3 nights! Yes he has one arm, and believe you me he can out drum " any" two armed drummer let me tell you! He did a drum solo so crazy, it was unbelievable! The drummer is quite younger then the rest of the band, but he looks way older from all the hard work learning to be wicked with one arm. In the movie it shows how he lost his arm on January 1st 1984. Keep jamming out Bro! Wes Sept

Three years late to the party here... but Rick Alan (aka The Thunder God) lost his arm in a car wreck. He was driving a Corvette (US Left-Handed drive car meant for the US where we drive on the right side of the road) in England where they drive on the left side of the road and the cars have steering wheels are on the right side of the dash. Someone in another car (whom has never been found and identified to this day) was messing with him and well he ended up flipping the car, severing his arm. They did try to reattach it but the surgeries failed.
The band did hire a backup drummer just in case Rick couldn't pull through during live events. Funny enough the backup drummer was late one day to a concert and when he got there Rick was absolutely killing it. After the concert the backup told the band that he was pretty sure they didn't need him. Going on memory for that one (it was in their book they published back in the mid 80's. I got it along with a VHS tape of "In The Round, In Your Face" somewhere around my house still).
Rick had physically recovered but it took him years to deal with the mental trauma of losing his arm.
Rick is an absolute legend even to this day. There's very much a reason why he has the nickname of Thunder God. That man has more talent and can do more behind a drum kit than most able bodied drummers.
Oh, the 'red iphone' line? He's actually saying "Radar Phone". :D
If you haven't done it by now you need to listen to the rest of the album though. It's an absolute rock masterpiece. Same goes for their two previous albums to Hysteria (Pyromania and High and Dry).
