Hazrat Sultan-ul-Arfeen Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom (RA) affectionately known as Makhdoom Sahib, was a revered Sufi mystic living in Kashmir. He was born as Hamza Raina in the year 1494 CE (900 AH) in Tujjar, Sopore, to parents Usman Raina and Maryam. He is often referred to as Mehboob-ul-Alam, meaning beloved of the world, and Sultan-ul-Arifeen, signifying king among those who know God. Additionally, he is known by other names such as Hazrat Sultan and Qutub-ul-Arifeen.
Syed Jalal-ud-din Bukhari (RA), a revered Suharwardi saint from Delhi, had a remarkable dream in Madina Munawara. "He saw the Prophet (PBUH) talking to a young man. Upon enquiring from the Prophet it was told to him that the young man belonged to Kashmir and he is the son of Baba Usman and spiritually the offspring of Prophet." The prophet directed Syed Jalaluddin to go to Kashmir for the spiritual guidance of Sheikh Hamza. He arrived in Kashmir in 932 AH and Sheikh Hamza met him in the khanqah of Malik Ahmad Yatoo. Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari trained and instructed him for six months and after that, he went back to Delhi.
Shaikh Hamza Makhdoom initially followed the Kubrawi tradition but later received initiation into the Suharwardi Silsilah from Sayyid Jalal-ud-din Bukhari (1308-84) of Uchh, renowned as Makhdum Jahaniyan-i-Jahan Gasht. His spiritual journey was influenced by Mir Syed Ali Hamdani and Sheikh Nuruddin. Shaikh Hamza played a pivotal role in guiding numerous disciples along the path of spirituality, elevating many to prominence in Sufi circles. Among his notable disciples were Baba Dawood Khaki, Maulana Shamsu-din Pal, Khawaja Ishaq Qari, Khawaja Hasan Qari, Baba Haidar Tulmuli, Baba Hardi Rishi, and Roopa Rishi.
Sheikh Hamza manifested numerous miracles and supernatural phenomena through his spiritual abilities. Hazrat Baba Dawood Khaki authored Wird-ul-Muridin, to honor his mentor and guide, chronicling various miraculous events associated with him. "𝘚𝘩𝘶𝘬𝘶𝘳 𝘓𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘩 𝘩𝘢𝘢𝘭𝘪 𝘮𝘢𝘯'𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘩𝘻𝘢𝘩 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘶𝘥𝘢𝘴𝘵,;𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘬𝘩𝘪 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘬𝘩𝘢𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘏𝘌𝘐𝘒𝘏 𝘏𝘈𝘔𝘡𝘈 (𝘙𝘈) 𝘵𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘩𝘣𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘶𝘥𝘢𝘴𝘵".
Hazrat Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom passed away at Makhdoom Mandaw on the 24th of Saffar, 984 AH, at the age of 84, following a brief week-long illness. Khwaja Muhammad Tahir performed the ritual washing (Gusul) of his body and led the funeral prayers. By the saint's wishes, he was laid to rest at Kohi Maran, the spiritual epicenter he had established. His funeral procession, attended by contemporary scholars and Sufis like Sheikh Yaqub Sarfi and Sultan Ali Shah Chek, was solemnly taken from Eidgah to Koh-e-Maran.
