My mom cleaned houses in southern California, sometimes the homes of the rich and famous. Etta James used to pay my mom $500 to polish the silver dishes Etta put out for Christmas. One year on my mom's birthday, Etta spent a week in Vegas, and Etta flew my mother and her best friend (who cleaned Etta's house, but hated polishing silver dishes) out to Vegas for a whole week and treated her like one of her own. During this time, she asked my mom if she was still seeing my worthless loser dad, and when my mom said she was, Etta said "My girl, you don't need that raggedy old man." Etta was so, so right.
All of this happened a few decades ago, but thank you Etta for always providing the means for my mom to make Christmas wonderful for my sisters and me. Selfless, generous, thoughtful woman.

Ppl don’t understand what singing from the soul means, she felt every note, every word; she was reliving a moment singing this.. you can hear it.. you have to go through something to have this sound. That’s what makes these songs so phenomenal, man, Etta is a true blue legend. I love this woman, and never met her. RIP 🙏🏾

I can’t think of any other song that so perfectly captures the raw pain of losing someone you love to another. And there is certainly NO other singer who comes close to touching Miss Etta James’s version. You can hear aching in every note, howls of regret with every word. This is the BLUES, my friends. God bless you, Miss James. You’re leading the heavenly chorus now...

This is THE heartbreak song that all the other heartbreak songs wish they could be...especially when I hear “Something deep down in my soul said cry girl” or “I was just sittin here thinking about your kiss and warm embrace, when the reflection in the glass I held to my lips now babe revealed the tears that was on my face..” always makes my eyes well up and my heart hurt cuz it hits so close to home (Am I right?!)

Something deep down in my soul said, "Cry girl" (cry, cry)
When I saw you and that girl, walking now
Ooh, I would rather, I would rather go blind boy
Than to see you, walk away from me child, no
Ooh, so you see, I love you so much
That I don't want to watch you leave me babe
Most of all, I just don't

I was just, I was just, I was just sitting here thinking
Of your kiss and your warm embrace, yeah
When the reflection in the glass
That I held to my lips now baby (yeah, yeah)
Revealed the tears that was on my face, yeah, ooh
And babe, baby (baby, baby, baby) I'd rather
    I'd rather be blind boy

But more and more i study about music, i always find black people as the ones who make the music better, man i am latin, and have mix of some africans, from some region. I have through my veins, adn, blood, mind, soul, i have the rythm and the black people . ❤ Forever indeed this music makes me cry, is so good man, has a lot of feeling, a lot of soul. I am a white guy from London England and I have been a soul boy my whole life. Nothing unusual about white people loving soul music. Indeed singing it some of them can even sing it (check out Elu "Paperboy" Reed for example) I listen to soul music out of choice more than any other genre although as i have got older my tastes have broadened but Jackie Wilson, Tyrone Davis, Lou Rawls all get played almost daily in my house or in my car... 😎

I feel this song in the pit of my stomach. It’s the story telling and the pain in her voice. That can’t be translated by another artist in a cover 🥺
(Edit) Just to clarify the song can be covered well of course. I’m not knocking any artist who covers any song. I was taking about no one being able to cover her raw, unfiltered, heartbreak. That’s her story and in my opinion no matter how emotional the retelling is, it doesn’t beat what, “I” feel when Etta sings it.
