I was scratching my head too. Maybe what he was really trying to say was "we're not going to compete with EK and QR.....YET" lol So maybe focus on growing the market for Riyadh as a destination since the city needs the connectivity anyway and then pounce on EK and QR later in the future?
RIyadh as a city needs far greater connectivity regardless, so in many ways this will compliment Emirates and Qatar, but both Emirates and Qatar largely focus on transiting through their respective hubs. Riyadh air will inevitably have to cater to people who want to transit through Riyadh, but that's not the point of the airline's existence, and it will inevitably create a new market that doesn't currently exist.
Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad are huge.. Riyadh Air will be different I think.. focusing on tourism and business visits from large airports/cities to Riyadh. Saudia will be the main airline in Jeddah, but will still operate from Riyadh especially for domestic flights until Riyadh Air secures big order of narrow body sh-m range aircrafts..
This new airline may have potential, however it all has to do with it's equity makeup. If it has an equity base of mostly private shareholders, they must have done their homework and therefore know what destinations to fly to and make the airline profitable and successful. Very little, or no govt equity means, no govt interference whatsoever. 😀
I’m not feeling it. History has shown that airlines that start aggressively don’t survive. I’m interested in seeing how long it takes before they fail or have to aggressively scale back.
The only rival is Saudia and that is shooting ANY traffic that MIGHT transit the Kingdom. Given the current state not just in the Kingdom but also the Region the creation of RiyadhAir is without doubt a major mistake. The real solution was to build Saudia’s Hard/Soft Product, The Infrastructure of the Airports, Consider their network and their capabilities to provide transit pax some alternative options to QR/EK IF they hoped for a share of that revenue. The future of both the Kingdom’s Premium Carriers is not clear or survivable. It’s a case of PanAm & TWA once again with neither Airline surviving. Unlike India 🇮🇳 where they have had a change, it was Air India v Vistara but they are up against Indigo who are dominating the Domestic Services and now entering long haul, the Kingdom is fighting other Countries Flag Carriers who are well ahead of the competition both in length of service and their quality product. This is as doomed as much as the Braniff attempts and they had a deal to have Concorde to use Domestic Service as well as utilising the 747. Nah, this is always going to fail but it’s whither two carriers fail or just one we just have to wait and see. Who will pick up the pieces - FlyNAS?

@@kkrsnn5632Dubai is well established and remains more popular than Qatar and transiting through Doha. Emirates and Dubai will remain on top even with Riyadh Air.
Who wants to go on holiday in Saudi Arabia? Would never cross my mind! don't know why you are spending so much time on an airline that is not going to fly any time soon.
Do a search for tourism in Saudi and you'll see why. It's the second fastest growing tourism hotspot now that it opened up to the world and eased restrictions.
All is well until one considers Saudi Arabia’s abysmal human rights record. All this cheering of the kingdom is kinda sickening. Saudi is in the middle of a complete transformation at the moment. It's going to take a few decades, but it will be the new UAE very shortly. Also chop chop square isn't a thing anymore as MBS has abolished public executions and whatnot. The country is in the middle of an economic industrialization phase. No more "public" executions - they'll lure you to a Saudi Embassy in another country and do the deed there. Without consequences (for them), of course. TBH, though, the USA has a tragic track record of human and civil rights abuses. @@Sacto1654

What a gorgeous livery!
Saudi Arabia not Saudia Arabia 😂😂😂
Don’t forget Air India wants that market too! All considered I wouldn’t care to go through any of them. Kinda leaves Turkey 🤷♂️
Air India can't compete with airlines who can basically offset oil surcharges.

No, unavoidably it will fight Emirates, Qatar, ...
Exactly.
Of course it will
Also will cannibalise the other state owned carrier - Saudia.
@@MikoyanGurevichMiG21 Long term both will probably be merged.
It will never be much of tourist market. Nothing really to see other than sand and restrictive laws and culture.
no alcohol means its not a competitive airline, specially in the premium cabin
Riyadh Air has the potential to capture markets, backed by oil money as they are one of the largest oil producers.
Forget other gulf carriers. It's competing mainly with Saudia

Do they serve alcohol on their flights, or plan to?
No they don’t and they never will
