    First and foremost, thank you so much for making this video, you just saved me a bunch of money and god bless you for that. I have my nas, my desktop and 2 laptops that I need max transfer speeds, does that mean that am going to need 2 adapters for the nas server and 1 for each laptop?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  2 роки тому

      If you have that many devices attaching to the NAS that need max speed at the same time, you may want to consider a high-speed switch like a 2.5GbE switch (or higher) to simplify things. Otherwise, you will need an adapter for each connection at the NAS and one for each client assuming they are all connected at the same time. This can get messy with that many devices. This method works great but is better suited for one connection. Because the NAS can connect to a switch using only one connection, it may cost less or approximately the same to use something like the 2.5.GbE unmanaged (ua-cam.com/video/0NBnFOZAXN8/v-deo.html). Laptops tend to be slower at transfers. With this many devices, you would need 6 adapters, and with a switch, you would need the switch, and only 4 adapters and would provide you some growth. Either way, you choose, good luck, and thanks for the feedback. Let me know what you decide.

    One question: using this method, if you configure the interface as a virtual switch are you still able to take advantage of port trunking to get a 2GbE connection to the 1GbE switch in your example? I would imagine it would look something like Adapter 1, Adapter 2 and Adapter 5 would make up the virtual switch and somehow you would need to aggregate Adapter 1 and Adapter 2. Is this possible or does creating the virtual interface like this disable the ability to configure port trunking?

    Interesting. Pls consider doing a video on considerations involved with expanding NAS space. I have a QNAP TS 251+ with 2 x 4 TB in RAID 1 config and now < 1 TB free space remaining. QNAP expansion chassis with USB connection vs new 4 Bay QNAP NAS vs simply replace existing drives with 2 x 10 TB?? The drive expansion seems simplest and best; 6 TB of new space would give years of free space and > service reliability with new drives ... but interested in your thoughts??

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  3 роки тому

      I can certainly do a video on NAS expansion. Have you seen the other videos on that topic? I posted some links below for reference. As for your question, I would pick option three and add a NAS instead of the expansion chassis. There are a couple of reasons. First, the expansion box does not support raid expansion so you will have to fill it right from the beginning and in the RAID configuration of choice. It also sets up as a separate volume which is not a problem but it will not just expand your current volumes. Lastly, it is USB and relies on the controller from your main NAS. The way I figure it, given the cost of drives is equal on any option, the only real cost difference is between the NAS and the Expansion box. I would buy a TS-453D (~450) and 2 8T drives, This would be about the same cost as having to buy 4 drives to load up the expansion unit but with much more expansion opportunity. It also allows me to switch my data to the faster NAS and use the older unit as a backup or for photos.

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  3 роки тому

      @@donsylvester5275 You have two options. The first is to set up the new NAS from scratch and copy the data over share by share. This way takes longer and is more work but there is more control. The second is to replace your current drives one at a time using the drive replacement on the old unit and when it is done,, backup your settings, pull the drives and put them into the new NAS. There is a process of adapting the volume into the new NAS and all you have to do is recreate the users and set permissions. This is less work but I still prefer option 1 as I retain the control and decide what gets moved over but that is just me. The only catch is to make sure that the old unit and new unit are compatible and will accept your current volumes. QNAP has some information on their site once you decide which new NAS you are getting.

      @@MikeFaucher Thx Mike. I've thought about it and I think I'll simply upgrade the size of the drives in my TS-251+. The additional space will allow several more years of use and I'm using an old laptop as a streaming device ... so I only use the NAS for storage. Meanwhile, the QNAP products will continue to advance in power and functionality and I'll upgrade the NAS in 2 or 3 years when the new drives on my TS-251+ are getting full. I saw your vid on how to upgrade the drives ... super helpful.

    Very good explanation! This is ideal if you are the only PC in your LAN who needs to access NAS, but what if there are 15 hosts in the same LAN connected to a switch and they all need to access NAS in the same time? How can I optimize the network in such a way that I can guarantee for every host an average download speed of ~500 Mbps ?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  Рік тому

      This is a great question. What you are asking will work and you will just have to try it as there is no way to guarantee it as at some point you will max out the bandwidth of your NAS depending on the hardware and drives you are using. Anyone on a 1G switch will max out at 125MB/sec. If you have that many users pulling that much data I would use a 10G switch and make sure you have plenty of cache in your NAS. Hope that helps.

      my only experience so far high multigig was via the tl-d400s. i only could verify these speeds when i was doing back up and restoring between the nas the expansion box to verify those speeds. so with the addon card, a switch, i'll probly be able to get those kinds of multi gig speeds in day to day use.
      in all honesty, i only sparingly do big file transfers, so 1gbe would have been fine for me. i'm sure for video editors and smbs, where time is precious, and they move lots of stuff often, then ya, these types of speeds are justified, but then again they may fare better off with 10gbe setups.

      @@GlennUpgraded No, I assume you are already using a switch or a router currently, Just plug into your current router if you have an open port otherwise use a low cos switch and it should work fine.

      DS920+ have 5 Gbps USB3 ports. You can plug Realtek based 2.5 Gbe or Aquantia based 5 Gbps (like this Qnap adapter but there are cheaper options too with same chipset) adapter. For example I use a 2.5 Gbe adapter with my DS218+ (+DX517). I connected directly my NAS 2.5 Gbe and PC's 2.5 Gbe. Both NAS & PC have 1 Gbe NICs as well - these were connected to router. I didn't applied any virtual switches. Therefore I have paralelly the 2.5 Gbe (280 MB/s) and 1 Gbe (110 MB/s) speed ...
      DSM doesn't contain the necessary drivers but it can be downloaded from internet. A simple browse and OK in Synology Package Center and it works. You can apply fix IPs or apply DHCP server - it is up to You ...

    In the first capture at 2:14 you mention having Gigabit transfer speed but I'm only seeing 90 MB transfer. What am i missing?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  3 роки тому +2

      You're not missing anything. Max transfer speeds on a 1 gig network is 113/MBs (Megabytes). Because of my testing environment, I was getting 90MBs which actually is pretty typical. After the direct connection with 2.5Gbe I was getting 253MBs (Megabytes). Remember the speed test is in megabytes, not megabits. Hope that helps.

      what cable you used in the video? cat5e or other?

  • @realburn6845
    @realburn6845 3 роки тому

    Not sure if I understand well: so you connect the USB3.0 port of the NAS with a USB to ethernet adapter (5Gbps), and you use an USB to ethernet 2.5Gbps to the PC and you put a regular network cable in between? Why not just connect the PC to the NAS over the USB3.0 connection as that would allow 5Gbps between your PC and the NAS ? I mean: at this point, the way I understand, the only device you connect, over high speed, to the NAS is your PC so no issue using the USB port for direct connect (in this setup, I don't really see how it is possible to connect a second PC to the NAS with 2.5Gbps throughput as you can use the USB connection only for one device, unless you connect the USB to ethernet adapter to a network switch which would be typically 1Gbps again... Gonna rewatch the video as it is really interesting, but at this stage I don't see the point of converting back and forth...

      Looking a little further, the issue can be distance. USB does not allow you the same distance as ethernet. The other thing is this is a concept as some may have a 10GbE card in their systems or their NAS but do not want to buy a $600 switch. If you are close to your NAS and are OK with USB that works too, but if you are 15+ ft away it is a different story as performance will be bad if it connects at all. As you know there are a bunch of ways to do things but for some, this is a good option. For others like me, I have to use a switch as I have a bunch of 10GbE devices. Thanks for the question.

      @@MikeFaucher You got me there with the distance. Did not take that one into account indeed. Etherenet allows (in ideal conditions and good patch) to go about 100m max. USB not nearly that far. Related to 10G: when looking on ebay, a 10G card only costs about 30 to 40 Euros (Melanox). Personally I use that solution with a Ubiquiti switch. It is indeed very expensive if it is only for a NAS system and only advisable if you are using a NAS device (or self built storage device) as shared storage for VM's or a high speed NAS that needs to be accessible by multiple people at the same time (but in that case, also the type of disks being used is to be taken into account as at 10G speeds, a mechanical disk only solution makes the disks become the bottleneck if not using cache drives)
      But man: I learned something today. If I get someone asking me for a fast NAS solution with a NAS that is located in the attick or in the cellar your solution is genius and dead cheap indeed :-) :-)

      One other very minor thing that everyone should consider is that going USB still needs an ethernet cable for everything else. Doing it this way you do not. Not a big deal but is worth considering.
