    Unbelievable solo and collaboration. A true piece of art. The transcription is amazing. Heard this solo a lot and was singing along with the transcription. Unbelievable they basically stay in 4/4 all the time 🤯 I thought a lot of the stuff was shifting a bit but they have super straight time.

    C. P. is a great musician and I don't think anyone will argue with that. I've known him since his first recordings with Woody Shaw (if I'm not mistaken). Always very clear ideas and great sound. But I don't like his musical approach at all.

      I hear you. Thanks for your comment. You have the right to say so. CP is also not my first 'go to' sax player, but I think this performance in particular, is outstanding for its interplay and quick reaction to inputs. His control over the form, the changes and the sax itself are impressive.

    So... am I alone on this... because I... did not like this. Don't get me wrong, it's objectively good. It's technically incredible. But for me it's the musical equivalent of Picasso. I understand that Picasso was revolutionary and that he deserves a spot amongst the great artists of all time. I do not have any Picasso prints in my house. I saw Chris live not long ago and felt the same way. When I saw him way back on the Traveling Mercies tour, it was incredible and I loved every second. But when I see him now I think, yes that is good, but it's just not particularly interesting to me.
    I think he's moved into another realm of art music that isn't really jazz anymore. And again, that's not a criticism, it's just not really for me.

      Hi @turnerjazz7872 thanks for your comment. You would be surprised to know that I totally agree with you re: Chris Potter. He is a Martian, and I don't know how he can play like that (well, I guess thousands of hours of practice), but when it comes to heart and ,I listen to something else. What I absolutely love of this solo is the perfect, immediate, almost telepathic interaction with the piano (both ways). That is really incredible.

      I realy do appriciate the honesty and the hesitation in your comment. And i also liked the Picaso reference in order to explain your point. It did made things clear. I wonder though, did you feel as if potter is too technical in this solo? I mean to say that for the commoner listener - this solo is played from the bottom of the heart. Yet i did felt as a saxophonist myself something strange or a bit technical/artificial about this whole play... idk... i realy did enjoy it, but maybe it was a bit soulless, while it wanted to feel like a pure soul song? An Intersting honest and very human doubted comment here sir, very rare to read such in jazz legends comment section. Ty 😊

      I think I can agree, but it might have more to do with the style of the piano accompaniment, than potter. Is sounds like the piano is playing in more of a Brad mildau style, and mildau is very much a Picasso type!

    • @kevinhenderson9841

      @@jayramsey690Yeah I agree with this. I think if shai was playing some kind of swinging feel then maybe it wouldn't feel so other realm-ly. But I have to say it's by far my favourite version of all the things. The interplay is amazing and Chris' solo is absolutely perfect. His motific development and rhythmic language is unmatched IMO

    Chris’ playing is always great, but the voicing that the piano player was using didn’t really sound much like the tune. It sounded very abstract, and you don’t necessarily need the framework of a jazz standard for that. Hell, in some parts they sounded like they were playing different tunes altogether.

    • @mirkoguerrini
      @mirkoguerrini  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi @saxophobe, I hear you. That is, possibly, why I like it so much. The ability to create a whole new plethora of colours from a well known standards and also the willing to take risks and explore directions that are not normally taken.

    • @razzmatical
      @razzmatical 6 місяців тому

      I agree, it feels like despite playing off of Potter, he was just playing his own thing. The new colours are cool but I feel like he isn't matching Potter's style in his comping.
