Hardly the only one. We probably need more college and community band nerds (what we hope those high school band nerds who don't go professional grow up to become), though.
+Jess Hart I love horn rips in music like this...it makes it feel awesome and uplifting...I play Trombone but I wish I could play stuff with the same tone as a really good french horn
We played this song the year that our band took a small trip to Wisconsin. The room I was in had like 8 guys and we were all hanging out at night, playing the Wii that one kid brought. Since we're all band nerds, we had Arabesque playing in the background as we were playing. Alex and I vs. Dave and Mitch. Wii tennis series was tied and the next game won. The match was about half done, and the intense part at 4:29 started playing, amping us up. Just as I hit the ball into the corner of the opposing court, winning the game, and thus the whole series, the majestic trumpet sound at 4:58 filled the room, as well as my heart. Alex and I had fought hard against Dave and Mitch for the title of best wii tennis duo in the room, and we'd finally won. Euphoric glory filled Alex and I (both of us are trumpet players), and it was topped off with the splendid fanfare of the trumpet. We celebrated and when I listen to this song now, I get chills that bring me back to that night. You couldn't have written a more perfect moment.
My sons High School played this tonight for festival and scored ALL Superiors. Incredible piece. Incredible band. And a little of mom's bragging, because my son has the tympani drum solo and he played it perfect WITH his arm in a cast. He worked hard to be able to do it. The whole band worked exceedingly hard and I'm very proud of all of them!
Might I just say that the Low Brass ostenato at 2:50 is really addicting to play, and fun, and basically great to play in front of freshman to make them think you are amazing
After pretty much every rehearsal, there is a group of people that play that part as loud as they can (including me) and it's basically the greatest thing.
Finn Underwood So when I performed this on Tuba, I noticed that this part has octaves for the Tuba for most of it, but the last bit where it descends to a C only had the upper octave (presumably the orchestrator thought that it would get unplayably low, but since I had a 4-valve BBb Tuba, I could actually get down all the way to that low C, lowest C on a Piano btw)....so I played the lower octave all the way down to that C in the performance. It was awesome.
+Finn Underwood My band class is playing this, and I can tell you right now, that that part is amazing to play on the Bass Clarinet. It's my favorite part of the piece.
Flute, Clarinet and Alto Sax players, the first 1.5 pages is basically your worst nightmare. Unless, you know, you can play that sort of stuff. Personally I love the bass clarinet in this. But I could be biased.
You seem pretty cynical friend. Maybe he was saying "Thank you" because he was in accordance with him? Thanking him for speaking exactly the way he felt? We can continue being passive-aggressive and sarcastic though.
I played this in my marching band show this year. It was the most fun I've had in a long time. I smiled so big during the low brass feature at 2:40. It's simply amazing
I'm playing it in my high school band right now and even though I'm on third part it's still so much fun and sitting next to the trumpets and hearing all their parts makes it even better. Probably one of my favorite songs I've ever played in band since I started in 6th grade
Played this in high school! I think I was in 10th grade? Either 10th or 11th. Competition years were 2010 and 2011 in the Spring. It was so much fun, yet killed us all.
currently in my freshman year of highschool playing flute (thing is, i can't even play anything above that high g so 2nd flute is the only part i could ever play for this song-) going insane over. i know its probably weird for me to be replying to a 6 year old comment though
i have an amazing memory connected to this song. a while back i was on a school trip to indonesia to study language, and we'd been given some downtime in the hotel to freshen up before going out with the group for the next activity. i was roommates with some band kids so we were discussing concert band repertoire, and somehow we chose this piece to listen to on my friend's phone speakers. now, about half an hour prior, we had ordered room service to our hotel room, but since we had ordered in indonesian, nobody knew exactly when the food would arrive. we thought we would have plenty of time, but sure enough, time passed and passed and room service was yet to arrive. it got to the point where we had literally five minutes until we had to be in the lobby to leave to the next destination. so we're in the room, waiting anxiously and kinda freaking out about having to cancel our order, and we hear a knock on the door just as the song hits climax. thing is though, by that time we had mere minutes before we had to be out, so i have vivid memories of speed-eating pizza with my mates while the tutti sections play in the background, followed by the arrival of the victorious conclusion as we realize that our disaster had been averted. the pizza was really good too. some epic memories tied to an even more epic piece!
Bari sax player here (clearly). We had no low brass to speak of throughout my high school band career, so I'd double on reading a baritone bc part and changing the play style to match as best I could. Well, when this piece was passed out, I've never heard a band suddenly learn to sight-read so quickly. It sounded wonderful, and every practice we would always nail the entire thing, each time. It was truly a set of spectacular moments (and a great bassline to embellish!)
We played this my freshman year of high school, 7 years ago. I auditioned and got into the highest level band and was one of two oboists. The oboe solo at 5:20 was my first ever and it will always have a place in my heart.
Lemmons I agree man its absolutely terrible that such great music will go unnoticed! This is by far one of my all time favorite songs above all others.
Ravage369 Indeed! And plus, the marching band I am in (state champions of Florida 2014-2015! :D) will be playing this in our upcoming show, and we are all super excited as this is a very fun song to play!
Sam Hazo came to my university as a guest conductor for an honor band and conducted this piece. I could tell how much this meant to him and it was truly an amazing experience with a wonderful man.
We just received this in class yesterday and we're going to play this in our concert next month. I received the second Bb clarinet part and being a freshman, I thought, "Oh dear, I could never play this right, I don't want to play this." Then I heard the recording and I just thought, "Must play must play must play must play" because this is worth practicing my mouth off. Worth it.
@@ilovepeppermintbark wish I had a recording of our performance. From what I remember I'm pretty sure we did a great job. It almost seemed though that the crazy woodwind section didn't even matter to master because it can hardly be heard lol
So happy to actually be playing this amazing piece! The tuba parts are actually very fun to play and I think it's a pretty enjoyable piece for all instruments. I love and found it quite funny how my band director described the low instruments entering at measure 58 to be badass Arabians strutting into a party HAHA.
There was this guy performing in a jazz band at our middle school playing the cowbell and absolutely rocking out to it like he had the greatest part in the world. We (band people) called him cowbell boy and he is legendary. For some reason this song reminds me of him.You may have noticed that I have posted four comments in a row. This is because I have listened to this song for about two hours trying to do homework but laughing at biased instrument comments and geeking out over this masterpiece.
That's it. I've listened to this only a couple of times and I'm an eighth grade trumpet player. I'm telling my teacher symphonic band needs to play this this for our spring concert. By far the most amazing piece I've ever heard.
Had first trumpet on this piece and it was so much fun getting to that double D at the end! I love how he uses all sections in his pieces. An overall fun piece for every section!
***** First trumpet on Arabesque is pretty much the best thing that ever happened. I couldn't always hit the D at the end, but I kind of owned the fabulous melodies earlier on :D
This is my absolute favorite piece ever!! I hope to be able to play it in my lifetime. The brass part is amazeballs. The woodwind part is fantabulous. The percussion part is awesome. And they way they all fit together creates a piece that just blows me away. This is such a work of art.
As the person who had the flute solo and was first chair as a sophomore in high school, this song will always be my nemesis, but also my favorite and most impactful piece of music I've ever played or heard. I still remember when our director played this for the first time after our fall concert, and we were all like, LOL NOPE, and he just stared at me with a smile, nodding while I died inside xD
1:18 to 2:41 is definitely the most fun as a percussionist. I was told to go to wind ensemble for a day, and we played arabesque. I was told to play marimba and glockenspiel and my god it was the most fun thing I've ever played. No piece we've done in symphonic band will ever be as fun as this piece Edit: fixed a timestamp, I was off by a second
It was amazing having Samuel R. Hazo conduct the 2013 Iowa All State band with this piece! Amazing experience! He is truly brilliant. The low brass part is fun to play and also a challenge. The expressive percussion parts makes the piece one of my favorite. I have to compliment the tambourine player in this recording - great technique!
I literally cannot stop listening to this piece. My sister played it when she was in band, and now our director is finally bringing it back so my year can play it as well. It is an absolute joy to play in class and listening to it is such a treat!
I still remember when we got this piece in wind band: the looks of the woodwinds when the tutti starts at 1:28. half of them didn't believe an euph could play that fast
All-County band wind ensemble Greenville, SC. 3rd chair tuba as freshman with everybody above me as a senior. This song will tear your lips to shreds, but is SOO fun to play. Quite frankly one of my favorite peices ever.
Still one of my proudest high school memories was playing bass bone on this freshman year. If you think that trombone lick is saucy now, I can assure you it certainly is when it's an octave down too
i clicked this while listening to the great locomotive chase seeing a french horn as tge photo as i do play thd french horn. after listening to it its pretty amazing
I'm a French Horn player and this was by far the funniest piece i've played, and I'm going into my junior year of high school. Every rip Hazo writes is perfect.
This is absolutely incredible. I was close to tears at the end of the piece, it brought out so much emotion! Samuel R. Hazo has never faltered to leave me speechless at the ends of all his pieces! Thanks for uploading this masterpiece!
The flute solo at the beginning....I know what I'm practicing over Spring Break. It's such a good piece I'm glad we're putting it on our list for state concert festival.
Unbelievable piece. Played it on tuba last year with my symphonic band. Not only is it a masterpiece but there was never a dull moment when playing this piece. One of my all time favorites.
i got to meet Samuel Hazo! He was conducting the All state band for the seniors, but came in to tell the junior all state band good playing tips. He is surprisingly funny, and energetic, compared to more serious composers I've seen. Having him critique our songs was just amazing.
We played this for my school's spring concert last year and while it's a lovely piece of music I pretty much wanted to cry every time we played it I don't think there was ever a time where I could play this correctly lol
The Tuba part on this is a blast to play, it's very rare to find compositions where for the most part the Tuba has something other than long tone harmonization or time-keeping rhythms. This is such a piece
I was in the same chair in high school when we played this song, and it really isn't as difficult as you'd expect. It was loads of fun to learn, and to finally be able to play it all the way through at a competition. I'm sure you'll have a great time playing this!
Sometimes I question Hazo's ability to write music that doesn't sound like his other pieces----and then he comes out with this and makes me put my foot in my mouth. Such a great composer.
My sophomore year in Symphony band, we played this in our spring concert, it turned out so great!!!! I love the euphonium and trombone one parts in the piece. playing the rhythms were so much fun!
FIRST CLARINET BABYYY! We played this in band two years ago and had Sam Hazo come in and conduct it himself it was an amazing opportunity to play it the way he pictured it! And this year the seniors in my band chose it to play again which is amazing! :)
Worst/best thing about high school band is that you almost always have a band piece stuck in your head.
Depends on if it’s a good piece or not.
And usually your playing one, and having another stuck in your head
Or stuck with cant remembering the name but continuoulsy humming it lol..on a hunt till you finally find it
Even during a test.
YT참교육장인 I’ve had to stay after class to do tests because I couldn’t fucking focus because of a band song in my head
this is like the best song evarrrrr
i know this comment is 6 years old but i did not expect to see you here lmao
Quorine make that 7 years....
oh wow never thought i would see one of your comments here
Wow, didn’t expect to see you here 😂 small world 🌎
I was just finding this song cus of high school memories, then I was like wait this commentor's profile picture looks familiar......hmmm ...
So this comment section has become like the official meeting place for high school band nerds
TheBDHShow you know it!!

4:37 makes me cry the chord progression is so beautiful
+Robyn Doney I know. It is amazing. I have this piece for our high school band right now. I play trumpet, so I highly enjoy that section.
+The Gods Legend Trumpets ftw
+Ravage369 I like the euphonium or baritone. if it still doesn't ring a bell, it is also known as a small tuba
+Don Cossack we get it m8 :3
Don Cossack I'm pretty sure we all know what a euphonium/baritone is...we've all obviously been in band here.
I actually met this man!! He guest conducted at our Honor Band and I absolutely loved the way he conducted with so much passion!!
I know, right (He was the conductor for the GMEA All State Band that I went to Thursday, Friday, and Today) and he's really nice and passionate
TheSaxophoneMan16
I hated whenever he shaved his beard for the concert though, he looked so much better with the beard
That's so cool! He's coming to conduct at our school this Friday. I am so excited to meet him.

Congrats!

the horn rip at 5:03 makes my soul soar

Yes, my skin gets all tingle-y!
At 2:30 too
+Jess Hart That "horn" rip is actually played by a lot of instruments in this piece. I play bari sax and even I have it. Altos, too. Probably more.
+forestman111 I know, the all of the saxophones have it. But in the recording the horns rocked it
God the timpani and low brass section of this song is just amazing
YESSSSS
I think you mean every section of this song is amazing.
I got to play to timpani for this, felt like I was way too loud. Now I get annoyed at my younger self for not playing out like I should have😂
i’m japanese high school student
i love american wind music,so i’m often listening to the song
my favorite part is4:57-5:23

travis lee Hey, my high school band played this, including all freshmen, and I remember it was so hard, I was only a freshman myself, on 1st trumpet
I'm going into 9th grade and we will be playing this next year o_o We play some really advanced music in our district
travis lee It's one of those parts that sound cool, no matter how easy or difficult it is
I'm playing this as a freshman and it's wild
Throughout the seven years I was in concert band, this was by far my favorite piece we ever played. This song is so epic.
nothing short of epic
For any woodwind who’s played this song, two words, measure 50.
I KNOW
As a french horn, I usually make fun of the saxes because of that very measure. I know it's hard as hell, but it's a friendly mocking.
Time stamp please?
We don't talk about measure 50 dark times my friend, dark times

In case anyone was wanting to know, this is the North Carolina 11-12 All State band from 2008. My band director was one of the Tubas!
That's actually really cool to be honest
2:47
That Low Brass.... Wow. Just... Wow.
Don't forget horns, they play that too!
and string bass
Finn Underwood So when I performed this on Tuba, I noticed that this part has octaves for the Tuba for most of it, but the last bit where it descends to a C only had the upper octave (presumably the orchestrator thought that it would get unplayably low, but since I had a 4-valve BBb Tuba, I could actually get down all the way to that low C, lowest C on a Piano btw)....so I played the lower octave all the way down to that C in the performance. OOPS I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS
I hate it when that happens
Tabitha Stanton same here honestly
Hazo is so nice to his percussionists. I'll gush about the xylo part in this song probably near forever
Wow...I played this probably 6 years in high school. What an exciting song! This song scared the crap out of me but it pushed me to become better!
this peace did the exact same thing to me!!!!!!!!

You can only get it is you looked at the music
5:45 The single greatest moment in the history of the tuba

We can continue being passive-aggressive and sarcastic though.
Nathan Evaristo Pereda Thanks :3

Ok but can we take a second to talk about the amazing tubas in this recording?
We play the tuba solo bit all the time just to piss off the director.

it really is amazing to have that much balance especially in a peice like this where you gotta beblasting while playing all 8th notes.

Where the heck is the clap?
There was a clap, but it was tiny. You need good speakers/headphones to hear it. xP

The expressive percussion parts makes the piece one of my favorite. I have to compliment the tambourine player in this recording - great technique!
I literally cannot stop listening to this piece. My sister played it when she was in band, and now our director is finally bringing it back so my year can play it as well. It is an absolute joy to play in class and listening to it is such a treat!
i had to play the flut solo my freshman year, i cried when i first got the piece
flute*
I still remember when we got this piece in wind band: the looks of the woodwinds when the tutti starts at 1:28. half of them didn't believe an euph could play that fast
performed this insane flute solo yesterday and it was probably the funnest thing i've ever gotten to perform
If you think that trombone lick is saucy now, I can assure you it certainly is when it's an octave down too
5:32 when the cockroach you had just killed is not there anymore.
Thanks to the person who liked my comment
Your profile pic makes this even better
i clicked this while listening to the great locomotive chase seeing a french horn as tge photo as i do play thd french horn. after listening to it its pretty amazing
I thought the same thing since I also play French horn 😂
I too ended up here as a French horn player interested by the thumbnail.
+Jessica Buckley I played the great locomotive chase as an eighth grader, and then played this last year as a junior- they're both very fun pieces! (:
3:18 when all the different parts come together 0.0
shyguyinfinity i just cried
I'm a French Horn player and this was by far the funniest piece i've played, and I'm going into my junior year of high school. Every rip Hazo writes is perfect.
In seven years of band, this is my favorite piece I ever had the honor and pleasure to play.
Rip every Clarinet and Flute player. Ever.
Bri Duncan And saxophone player
Bri Duncan and oboe
Don’t forget oboe
And trumpets
This is the best song arrangement I’ve ever heard in my life
My band started playing this and my god is it epic
Ours played it last year. It's amazing once you play it in a concert! :)
Smileyheckster I'm playing it this year too!
Smileyheckster same!
Smileyheckster what grade level is it?
6
This is absolutely incredible. I was close to tears at the end of the piece, it brought out so much emotion! Samuel R. Hazo has never faltered to leave me speechless at the ends of all his pieces! Thanks for uploading this masterpiece!
The flute solo at the beginning....I know what I'm practicing over Spring Break. It's such a good piece I'm glad we're putting it on our list for state concert festival.
I present to you, the greatest masterpiece of all time...
So much fun on Trombone. Especially the 1st part
***** bass trombone part is where its at lol
Joe Noble Agreed for 1st trombone!!! Most fun piece I've ever played
Kate Rodgers agreed. I got this piece signed by Mr. Hazo when I was at All State
4:58 that was the loudest time I have ever played the bass drum.
+isak pickel (iceman) lol it is loud, try the bass drum part from Movement 2 of Simple Gifts by Frank Ticheli
Want to make a percussionist happy?! give him TRIPLE FORTE! :D
+Blue I'm playing this at the moment and my arrangement has quadruple F on bass drum. When I saw that I was so happy! I was like O.O
I had never played suspended cymbals so loud..
listen to Verdi's requium
FRIK my only complaint is that it's not long enough 😂😂😂 I iust don't want it to end..
Just*
Lolol
imagine this as a marching soneg
MagmaInArms already seen a band do it
Poor fools. I hope some of them lived.
I'm scared to play this hearing how good it is :)
Played a Hazo program last night, with this piece as our opener, Echoes, and Ride. Really amazing to play.
I enjoy the fact that he is creative with mixing the beats of the drums with winds, off beats and such. unbelievable.
4:47 when it slows down is truly a magical part in this piece. I get to play this later on this year for festival and I’m so excited(clarinetist btw)
Playing trombone on this song is to die for.
Exactly man!!! That 1st part is killer
I have scrolled for years looking for this comment. Finally, a fellow trombone artist!
The flute part at the beginning is so cool 🎶🎶
The Tuba part on this is a blast to play, it's very rare to find compositions where for the most part the Tuba has something other than long tone harmonization or time-keeping rhythms. This is such a piece
I was in the same chair in high school when we played this song, and it really isn't as difficult as you'd expect. It was loads of fun to learn, and to finally be able to play it all the way through at a competition. I'm sure you'll have a great time playing this!
4:57 - 4:59 i wanna cry...
5:37 Dat chord structure though... POWERFUL
As a percussionist I thought this song was extremely fun to play
+megan powell Bass Drum all the way!
+Harry Sauer I played congas it was pretty litttt
Marimba!!
The sus cym part at the end os so fucking fire.
I play doumbek but on bongos 😆
Sometimes I question Hazo's ability to write music that doesn't sound like his other pieces----and then he comes out with this and makes me put my foot in my mouth.
Such a great composer.
I played this on both bari sax and euphonium. And I’ll be damned if it wasn’t the greatest piece of music I played in my high-school symphonic career
playing the oboe solo in this piece was definitely the highlight of my high school band days
Coolest piece I’ve ever played. Still have the fingers memorized to this day
Hazo was clearly being nice to the percussion.
Played this song 10 years ago and then 4 years ago again, and it is stuck in my head and heart forever. One of the best wind band pieces, ever.
My sophomore year in Symphony band, we played this in our spring concert, it turned out so great!!!! I love the euphonium and trombone one parts in the piece. playing the rhythms were so much fun!
I played this song yesterday and it was so fun! I just wish I was better so I could play the awesome flute solo!
Played this at a very competitive honor band. coolest piece ever.
4:37 Why can't that part be longer than 20 sec.
I know right so awesome!!
My favorite part!
Guess you'll just have to listen to it again lol what a shame
FIRST CLARINET BABYYY! We played this in band two years ago and had Sam Hazo come in and conduct it himself it was an amazing opportunity to play it the way he pictured it! And this year the seniors in my band chose it to play again which is amazing! :)
The horn rips and the chord progression throughout this music give me constant chills, Jesus
