I think being a potter involves more than a job, it feels like a lifestyle choice and I like to show all aspects of my choices. I am lucky enough to have made this choice at an early age. Thanks.
She sometimes sits on her butt with her legs splayed and eats like a bear. I unpack the kiln today. So many mugs, I wonder if people will ever get tired of them. Thanks and stay safe over there. What kind of pots do you make?
@@Vsmithpots Vaughan your mugs are lovely and so unique especially with your signature and a glaze foot. I’m work is functional pieces too, I work in stoneware and porcelain, but the porcelain so much more problematic!!! Yesterday I pulled some handles and today one of the handles was cracked, even though I was drying them slowly. But today I had the day off and took the Thruxton up to The Festival of Speed up at Goodwood, what a great day and I forgot all about my handles 🤣
Wow! I had no idea how a gas kiln works. So interesting ! And so much carefully packed inside. Can’t wait to see this kiln’s results 😊 Thanks for showing us Rocky
Hi Susan, gas kilns need to be baby sat. They can slip into reduction very easily and the colours change, sometimes not for the better. We are warming up this week.
Thanks so much for this. I have a Bailey gas kiln that is very similar to yours and we always fire in reduction, but I’ve been curious about doing oxidation firings in it.
I have done a few reduction firings but the pieces do not seem to sell well. I got nice copper reds but they sat on the showroom shelves, so I go back to oxidation and do great. I will probably try again this year so if you have any glazes you want me to try send them over, it would be fun to experiment again.
First time for me to see a gas kiln firing! I find the open flame scary, but still would like to try it some day! Can't wait to see the firing results! And -- Rocky is so dang cute!
You could put a little water dish out while Rocky is eating and they would probably use it to wet their hands and the food. Apparently raccoons gain a lot of information through their hands, similar to humans and their eyes, and they can sense better when their hands are wet, like how we see better with more light. They like to dunk their food in the water, wetting the food and their hands, it can look like they are washing the food. Raccoons are fascinating!
In German the name translates as Bear that washes its hands. Rocky has been with me over a year now but we see other Raccoons hit by cars almost daily. I think she does not wander far because I feed her and there are a lot of foxes in the area. I have water out for her and she drops the food in the bucket to wet it.
I love the "Waschbär" trivia. German is so wonderful; the German word for hydrogen is Wasserstoff: water + stuff, you gotta love the compound words. I'm very happy that she gets to eat and dip and be safe, thank you for taking care of her and letting us get a peak!

How in the world do you find the time to do everything you do? My Father brought home a raccoon when we were kids....we called him Peat E. His favorite treat was cheese curls. Raccoons do not have mouth saliva so they need to dip food in water if it is dry. This guy must have been reared by someone because he turned up friendly. I am too nervous to try petting her. We are too close to the road so I worry every morning as I walk down to the studio. Tomorrow is a gardening day, it takes a whole day to get it all under control. The bubble tool is so useful, thanks.

I see you have a bartlett controller on the gas kiln. does it work or is it there for the pyrometor only?
It does work but I prefer to fire manually.
