This was made a long time ago and my settings for MIDI are entirely different (2022). There is an additional column for MIDI ports. I see three different entries for my FA, "FA-06 08" for the "control surface", and for input and output, "FA-06 08", "FA-06 08 CTRL" and "FA-06 08 DAW CTRL". I've tried various combinations, but none provide any kind of MIDI communication as indicated in the tutorial.

Hi Ed! Thanks for the tutorial....I just recorded some tracks: Piano, Bass, and Drums. I'm hearing two pianos playing at the same time on my piano track! I have the FA08 on Local Control. It's almost as if I'm playing an instrument sound along with the FA08 piano. It's driving me crazy! I've looked online and haven't been able to find any info......I'm using Ableton Live Lite.....10
You probably already found the solution but go to MENU, sound settings and turn Local Switch OFF. Then you will be fine :) If possible, download the Roland FA manual from the web and there on page 100 it is explained how Local Switch works. If you have SPLIT and DUAL turned on and Local Switch turned off, you will not hear the instrument sounds without your DAW software. However, with Local Switch on and recording in a DAW, you hear double sounds. As I mentioned on page 100 of the manual, this is explained.
Hi Ed, I'm having a problem when recording midi in my Roland FA 08. When I try to freeze, then flatten a midi track into audio, I keep getting NO AUDIO OUTPUT. I've selected everything you showed us in the video, is there a solution ? Thank you
Can you only use the FA08 as a midi controller in combination with Ableton Live? I would like to use Bitwig or Motu Digital Performer as my DAW, as Bitwig works great with my Roli Seaboard and Digital Performer is better equipped to produce orchestral music. It would be a shame if I had to buy an extra Midi controller, while having this awesome FA08 in front of me. Thanks for the reply, and for the great support videos on the FA series.
Is quantization the only benefit of using MIDI for the FA’s built-in sounds? Seems like you’d want to record audio tracks, and use midi only to control sounds in ableton live
I just can't get into Abelton Live! In theory, I should love it, but I don't. Every time I look at the interface I am never inspired, it just looks ugly compared to Studio One, Reason, or any other DAW LOL What am I missing? Maybe it's because I don't make clip oriented music or "beats".
I'm extremely new to both Ableton and the fa 06. The fa 06 is factory reset to default. Drivers installed. All midi control in Ableton is good to go. When you hit the studio set the sampler pads turned green, I'm assuming this means they're playing nice with Ableton now. This only happens for me if I hit Daw Control. I can't have studio set buttons lit up and the pads green at the same time it seems. I didn't notice this until 2:53 in the video. followed everything step by step but at 2:53 I get nothing and don't even know what you did. Any advice?

Hi, I'm upset that the FA06 is expensive and I've had a lot of problems with it, I'm trying to communicate via my Windows 7 computer and the driver that is on the official Roland website does not work, I thought Roland was a brand very good but now I realize that it is very bad, now I have an expensive box that does not work for me.
since you can do the same exact thing with the built in sequencer of the FA, why the redundancy with Ableton???? Well, if you are into micro-managing your edits, and playing with wavelengths instead of playing music, then I guess the Ableton, and it's ilk, are a clear choice, but myself, I prefer to spend the vast majority of my time simply improving my playing itself, and would rather get better as a musician by playing and re-playing parts over until you are better at them, rather than fancy digital adjustment. To each, his own....

I know this was posted a year ago, but the only other benefit I know of is that with MIDI you can change your mind about the sound you used.

Remember that you can add your own skins to Ableton and make it look absolutely fantastic.

Only works for me when MIDI channel is set to the DAW control Transmit channel (Tx) on all channels. In my case MIDI channel 16.
