Years ago, I had a dream about "Roanoke". It was like viewing black and white footage from decades past or something. It looked, for some reason, like New York City in the 40's or 50's. And as the view panned up it was the city skyline. 'Roanoke' was ascertained. It was the homey sweet town of 'Roanoke'. I've never been there and I know it's not that big of a city.(?) It was inviting, though, although I didn't meet a single soul. I didn't see anyone in the b&w footage at all, even though it was bustling. But at the base there was a sort of 'mall'-like setting. With many different little places to eat. An impressive array. That were small nooks. I remember sitting down for pancakes at what looked to be a "Mrs. Butterworth's" breakfast franchise. (Go figure, I've never seen that one before.) All within a big area. I like trying new things all the time, though. I believe there was only one person there in the entire dream. An employee wiping off the little tables supported out from the walls. Female and kind of friendly, although I can't remember one word exchanged. Eating here was in color. I remember red and beige gingham. I believe it was clear to anybody that might have been there that I'd be a lost cause to approach, for some reason. I might be wrong on that, though, because I felt a little bit of puzzlement. It wasn't a hostile environment, though. The feeling was ...'resolve'. Or ...'acceptance'.(?) The lighting temperature was around 2700 kelvin. It was good and pleasant. That's about it. It was just one of those kind of weird things. I don't know why the word 'Roanoke' was emphasized. And I can't remember ever even thinking about Virginia or Roanoke, or anything. (You know, there's a Roanoke in VA.) I know Stephen King mentioned it in one of his stories, though. What was it "Storm of the Century"? I don't think I had been tainted by that, yet, though. Oh well. Whatever. Who knows what goes on in the mind of cats, huh? (I might not should post this. Lol.)
OTHER THEORIES BELOW!! I live in South Carolina and my History teacher is from North Carolina so we learn a lot about Roanoke and San Miguel and Santa Elena. Our class had to do a project and we came up with the idea that the people of Roanoke had heard of what happened to the people of San Miguel de Gualdape. BACKGROUND *San Miguel was the first established colony in SC and was Spanish. The people left the colony after they never received another supply ship and were starving. They attempted to make ship and sail back to Spain or Hispaniola but ran into an English ship who took them in then found out that they were Spanish (England & Spain were just starting to fight at this time) and sent them to Prison. Since these people going to Roanoke we're English they probably had heard of this and tried to do that. Also around this time the Spanish were trying to set up a new colony in SC around Port Royal Sound when Jaun Pardo went on an Indian expedition to North Carolina & Tennessee.* THEORIES 1) While on the exploration Pardo found out about the Roanoke settlement and went to destroy it (since Spain & England were fighting this is also why the supply ship couldn't return until 3 years later because it was fighting against the Spanish Armada) When Pardo found the settlement he could have taken the people as prisoners and collected all of their materials and things to bring back to the Spanish colony because they were also struggling because of the drought. The Settlers of Roanoke could have left the mark of Croatia in the wood as a sign pointing to which way the island was in case they needed to escape or the Spanish left it there to throw off the English men who would return and look for their lost people 2) The People of Roanoke heard about how the people tried to leave San Miguel and attempted it too since they had no new supplies due to the drought so they used what they already had and built a boat out of the wood from their homes and Palisades and attempted to cross the ocean but got lost at sea
They integrated with the local tribes. The final theory is vastly underplaying just how similar many of the features were. The Lumbee Indians, in particular, had not only gray eyes but very blonde hair and in some cases blue eyes. Add in the same last names and the use of English words, they integrated in.
Yes, but that only accounts for a small number of them. It doesn't explain what happened to the _majority_ of the colonists, or why the colony was abandoned in the first place. If there was widespread integrating, the Roanoke DNA Project would have discovered evidence of it

@@joemixon834 I think if it was a large scale massacre there would be an oral tradition of it among the local natives, along with some evidence of violence at the colony. And if it was a famine, there would be a mass graveyard. Most likely it was a combination of things, but I get the feeling that there's one missing factor that's been overlooked.
@@albanovkonrad probably a hurricane decimated their colony. Roanoke Island is smack in the middle of a major hurricane belt. Hurricanes blow thru there yearly. Many towns there over the years have been totally destroyed by hurricanes and then overswarmed with poisonous snakes that are flooded out of their holes. Not many people live in Cape Hatteras year round due to the temperamental weather. An easily explainable, obvious, somewhat drab, occurence that doesn't have the glamour of "mystery"
I'm 90 years old and I remember reading about 50 years ago of a town near the North Carolina coast where the inhabitants had similar names as the missing people, a slightly different complexion, and "talked out of books". I can't remember the name of the town, but I'd remember it if I saw it on a map. Oddly enough, I was a radarman on a ship based in Norfolk Virginia, during the Korean war, and one of my fellow workers was from that town. He never spoke of anything like this, but he could have been an ancestor of one of them.

I can’t tell you how many documentaries and shows I’ve seen on the Roanoke mystery yet I don’t seem to remember ever hearing that there were TWO missing colonies from the same location. 😱 This is news to me! I’m going to have to google this,lol
The earlier settlement was all male, not really a colony. Francis Drake found them all to have vanished. However, maybe some went to Croatoan, and later took in a few surviving Roanokers.
Tuna Helpa that’s not true. When Drake arrived, the colony was still there and he even brought several of the colonists who had changed their minds back to England. When the ships bearing supplies arrived shortly after his departure, the colony had been abandoned and the rest of the men were never seen again. This is even more interesting to me because, while we actually know a fair amount about the goings on of the first settlement, we still have no idea what actually happened to them, and that whatever it was happened very quickly
@7:45 is a map of Acadia (modern day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Maine) and the St Lawrence river. Acadia was settled in 1605, less than 20 years after Roanoke. The first winter was devastating and many settlers died. A lot of the survives intermixed with the aboriginals. I think the most likely story, is those who survived the drought, lack of supplies and raids would have had no other option but to intermix with the natives.
Ryan p I'd like to believe that's what happened. It's the least sad possibility. But if they had settled in and interbred with natives, that would definitely show up in DNA testing, and apparently that hasn't happened. IDK. I hate this mystery because at this point, there's not much hope it'll ever be solved.
Other theory I heard years ago was a Spanish attack. Spain was concerned about the British settlement and were already settled in Florida. If such an attack did occur resulting in loss of most colonists, some many of he survivors may have retreated inland to take up residence with the local Indians. However, there are no Spanish military documents to confirm such an attack on Roanoke.
Robert Bates interesting. I'd heard a similar theory but it didn't involve the Spanish. It ended as yours did where the remaining colonists moved inland and cohabited with a local Indian tribe, hence the word Croatoan which was in someway an English phonetic spelling of an Native Indian tribe name
I've grown up knowing about this as a child. I believe that I have family roots going back to the Lost Colony, as my mother has done much research on our family tree. We have English ancestry and some Indian blood in us as well. It was interesting that some of the Croatoan Indians were found to have blue eyes after The Lost Colony. Interesting that I have very blue eyes as well. I've always believed that that colonists integrated with the Croatoan Indians for both to help each other. I obviously don't really know what happened, as I wasn't there, but it always seemed right to me and from what I've learned about the subject. God bless you and thank you for your research.

Expedition Truth pretty much solved this. The colonists joined with the Native Americans and their DNA is in the native american population to this day.
Man, what I’d really like to find out is...what’s the ‘real’ reason John White didn’t sail to Croatoan Island?? It was only 50 miles south! And potentially his family! I really can’t believe why he would sail all the way home without first exhausting efforts to find his daughter and the colony. This really doesn’t make any sense to me. If it was a storm...why not wait it out? Why instead sail home? Hmm.. Didn’t he have a ship filled with fresh new provisions? I was a UFO investigator for a long time and though many reports were explained there were always a few that weren't. Among these were the vehicle interference reports. Again some were explained but others were totally inexplicable unless one used somewhat exotic ideas. However, the point is there was always something left, some effect on machinery and so on and witnesses too. It is this latter point that would tend to make me disregard any alien (ET that is) intervention in the Roanoke mystery. Local tribes would probably have written something about unusual events too. Come to think of, if it were aliens why leave local tribal settlements alone? There are other exotic theories around though and they make alien abduction look kind of tame.
Why not a combination of circumstances? They suffered a lethal drought just when expected supply ships didn't arrive. Like many Europeans at the time, they tried to maintain themselves in the "old" styles and methods, refusing to adapt native habits and techniques of survival. As the drought wore on, most of the colonists starved to death, The few remaining decided to split up, going separate ways and, ultimately, integrating with the natives. Still doesn't explain the lack of remains though.
Combination of #5 and #1 - some of them went to Croatoan (hence the tree), and some integrated with local Indian tribes, having run out of food in the Roanoke settlement. Mystery solved, NEXT!
I agree. The lack of supplies combined with the drought would have made it impossible for the settlement to survive. A large portion probably died off. The few that were left integrated into local tribes because it was the only way to survive.
It's pretty obvious they ran away to live with the Indians. They didn't like the ways of the Europeans and wanted to live in tribes where people relied heavily on eachother for survival.
Has anyone looked into the weather playing apart in the disappearance of the colony. I mean joining some of the surrounding tribes, some relocating to the Croatua island and maybe a possible flood dramatic enough to carry people away into the sea or a hurricane strong enough to cause loss of life and drag people to be lost at sea. Bodies would not be found under those conditions. Just a guess.
There's a movie loosely based on it, something like left behind or something. The world turns dark and everybody disappears except for the people holding a light (doctors with torches/people with phones I think). The ending is unsatisfying, we learn about the whole Croatoan thing but the mystery isn't solved and the protagonists don't find a way to survive. I liked it until the end to be honest, and although it wasn't exactly scary I found it terrifying because I have an overactive imagination lmao
Between the head of the colony leaving to get supplies and him returning there was 3 years of no contact, then there was a gap of 20 years before they looked for them again, if you don’t look for something for 20 years you can’t say it’s lost
I think this is my favorite real life mystery. I can get my head around the idea of integration especially when combined with that point on there being a drought. it's just so bizarre to think they packed up everything and made a point to leave almost no trace of themselves other than the name of another location where there's been nothing found as well.
having grown up in eastern north carolina we learn about this from a very young age. i've personally always believed in the integration theory. blue/gray eyes being recessive genes would make them extremely rare, especially in a breeding population where brown and black eyes are the most dominant.
I believe that the tribe that got their cheif killed was the croatoan tribe and they went to the settelers and raided their things.And they took the few that were left and held them hostage so the settlers can teach the tribe how to use the tools that they stole. And it was not completly abondoen, the buildings were still there but crops and tools were gone.
They also found a rock that had "Virginia went hence into heaven" written on it. They also found smoke and no fresh water. The livestock were still there and alive, they were all still locked in their pens.

Archaeologist Robert Wauchope excavated Eleanor Dare's tomb in the Nacoochee Valley and found another tablet in the tomb. He found another tablet in the base of a large nearby hill, upon which Eleanor's house was built. Wauchope studied a batch of tablets with Elizabethan English on them and urged the owners to take them to nearby Brenau College. Wauchope had a PhD from Harvard and so arranged for the Nacoochee stones to be examined by Harvard scientists. All were found to be authentic. About 12 stones "discovered" later in the Metro Atlanta area were determined to be fakes by scientists from Georgia Tech and Emory University. The real Dare stones state that the seven survivors were headed toward the Native town of Hontaoase. That was a real Creek Indian town in the 1500s and 1600s, but was an unknown word to whites living in Georgia during the 1800s and 1900s.

I think most but not all surviving colonists joined local native tribes. There is spotty evidence of much smaller European settlements towards Croatoan that might suggest a small portion of the original colonists refused to mix with natives and went on their own. Also possible that they were slaughtered and a small handful escaped which is why there are only trace signs of them after Roanoke was abandoned. This will always be a fascinating debate until the time irrefutable proof is finally discovered
Very interesting. Number 1 makes a lot of the other theories make sense. Maybe it was a combination of all these that caused the colony to slowly thin out and did appear. They probably tried to stay through the drought without supplies but relocated, the attacks may or may not have happened because famine is also a killer, and the few remaining either integrated into other groups or boarded random exploration or war ships. Anyone trying to track one of the few survivors down at the time would never have found anyone left alive even if they searched their entire lives.
Cannibalism is a likely theory, pick off the weakest first until they all perish. Could be that food was scarce due to the colonists and the natives were forced to cannibalism to survive and took them.

Of course they integrated. I don't understand why this is such a mystery, as there have never been any bones or human hair found that match anyone from the Colony. They couldn't have disappeared within three years. Their remains would still be partially there today if they were all slaughtered.
A few points deserve to be made about #5: The Jamestown eyewitnesses that reported seeing Roanoke survivors had received their reports from Native Americans, who *may* have actually encountered Spanish colonists that interacted with tribes in the Appalachia region. Also, when discussing the European characteristics of grey eyes, etc., it is one thing to say it is evidence of interracial genetics, but it is also very difficult to say they were absolutely descendants of lost colonists. Lost Colony was in 1587(ish). Subsequent settlements appeared in modern day NC, including Roanoke, by the late 17th century. Reports of Mixed Euro-Indian peoples in the early 1700's are roughly 100 years after the fact. But I think it is all within the realm of possibilities.
I can think of five theories: Eaten by a bear, all of them. UFO abduction. Plane crash in the Bermuda Triangle. (Hey, it's a time warp, wanna take ride?) Lured to Florida by a fake land deal. George Zimmerman. Bonus reason #1: Went out for smokes, never came back! (Someone else said that already.,) Bonus reason #2: Raptured! Bonus reason #3: Spontaneous human combustion! Bonus reason #4: Non-spontaneous human combustion!
I find this very interesting, anything could have happened, they could have all just up and left, or wiped out by disease, or killed by local tribes. Maybe in the future with further research, we may know someday. It will be something worth finding out.

Case: n+1: there was a drought. caused attacks due to famine and thirst. No remains were found because cannibalism. but they cant kill everyone at once, their meat would spoil so they came as needed. this caused Roanoke to move to Croatian and their rushed vessel to get there failed and they drowned or they were all eaten
Im from VA. Ive been 2 Manteo & saw the play when I was younger & walked the trail. My theory is that due to the drought some died. There was probably a threat from the natives & some were possibly killed. Others especially the women & children were forced to join the natives who moved to another area. Thats probably why theres never been any public records of the English due to their joining with the natives. Think logically. If u were new to an area & had no food or medicine or knowledge how to get it wouldnt u consult with the natives? No proof of cannibalism or alien abduction here ppl...keep it moving lol
I know an individual who swears that they find pottery on their property along the banks of the Neuse River and it is English pottery from that time period. Wooded areas and no history of modern habitation of this particular land along the river. She believes they loaded up and went inland up the Neuse. Who knows,,, could be true. She hasn't proven this to the folks that would need to see it but as of now I can't prove her wrong either.

The earlier settlement was all male, not really a colony. Francis Drake found them all to have vanished. However, maybe some went to Croatoan, and later took in a few surviving Roanokers.
Tuna Helpa that’s not true. When Drake arrived, the colony was still there and he even brought several of the colonists who had changed their minds back to England. When the ships bearing supplies arrived shortly after his departure, the colony had been abandoned and the rest of the men were never seen again. This is even more interesting to me because, while we actually know a fair amount about the goings on of the first settlement, we still have no idea what actually happened to them, and that whatever it was happened very quickly

@7:45 is a map of Acadia (modern day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Maine) and the St Lawrence river. Acadia was settled in 1605, less than 20 years after Roanoke. The first winter was devastating and many settlers died. A lot of the survives intermixed with the aboriginals. I think the most likely story, is those who survived the drought, lack of supplies and raids would have had no other option but to intermix with the natives.

I'd like to believe that's what happened. It's the least sad possibility. But if they had settled in and interbred with natives, that would definitely show up in DNA testing, and apparently that hasn't happened. IDK. I hate this mystery because at this point, there's not much hope it'll ever be solved.

Other theory I heard years ago was a Spanish attack. Spain was concerned about the British settlement and were already settled in Florida. If such an attack did occur resulting in loss of most colonists, some many of he survivors may have retreated inland to take up residence with the local Indians. However, there are no Spanish military documents to confirm such an attack on Roanoke.
Robert Bates interesting. I'd heard a similar theory but it didn't involve the Spanish. It ended as yours did where the remaining colonists moved inland and cohabited with a local Indian tribe, hence the word Croatoan which was in someway an English phonetic spelling of an Native Indian tribe name

I've grown up knowing about this as a child. I believe that I have family roots going back to the Lost Colony, as my mother has done much research on our family tree. We have English ancestry and some Indian blood in us as well. It was interesting that some of the Croatoan Indians were found to have blue eyes after The Lost Colony. Interesting that I have very blue eyes as well. I've always believed that that colonists integrated with the Croatoan Indians for both to help each other. I obviously don't really know what happened, as I wasn't there, but it always seemed right to me and from what I've learned about the subject. God bless you and thank you for your research.

Expedition Truth pretty much solved this. The colonists joined with the Native Americans and their DNA is in the native american population to this day.

I was a UFO investigator for a long time and though many reports were explained there were always a few that weren't. Among these were the vehicle interference reports. Again some were explained but others were totally inexplicable unless one used somewhat exotic ideas. However, the point is there was always something left, some effect on machinery and so on and witnesses too. It is this latter point that would tend to make me disregard any alien (ET that is) intervention in the Roanoke mystery. Local tribes would probably have written something about unusual events too. Come to think of, if it were aliens why leave local tribal settlements alone? There are other exotic theories around though and they make alien abduction look kind of tame.
Intergation is my favorite theory. It makes the most sense to me.

Why not a combination of circumstances? They suffered a lethal drought just when expected supply ships didn't arrive. Like many Europeans at the time, they tried to maintain themselves in the "old" styles and methods, refusing to adapt native habits and techniques of survival. As the drought wore on, most of the colonists starved to death, The few remaining decided to split up, going separate ways and, ultimately, integrating with the natives. Still doesn't explain the lack of remains though.

I agree. The lack of supplies combined with the drought would have made it impossible for the settlement to survive. A large portion probably died off. The few that were left integrated into local tribes because it was the only way to survive.
It's pretty obvious they ran away to live with the Indians. They didn't like the ways of the Europeans and wanted to live in tribes where people relied heavily on eachother for survival.

Has anyone looked into the weather playing apart in the disappearance of the colony. I mean joining some of the surrounding tribes, some relocating to the Croatua island and maybe a possible flood dramatic enough to carry people away into the sea or a hurricane strong enough to cause loss of life and drag people to be lost at sea.
Bodies would not be found under those conditions.

The world turns dark and everybody disappears except for the people holding a light (doctors with torches/people with phones I think). The ending is unsatisfying, we learn about the whole Croatoan thing but the mystery isn't solved and the protagonists don't find a way to survive. I liked it until the end to be honest, and although it wasn't exactly scary I found it terrifying because I have an overactive imagination lmao

Between the head of the colony leaving to get supplies and him returning there was 3 years of no contact, then there was a gap of 20 years before they looked for them again, if you don’t look for something for 20 years you can’t say it’s lost
I think it is horrible that they were just left there, with no ship ever to return to them.
I think this is my favorite real life mystery. I can get my head around the idea of integration especially when combined with that point on there being a drought. it's just so bizarre to think they packed up everything and made a point to leave almost no trace of themselves other than the name of another location where there's been nothing found as well.

having grown up in eastern north carolina we learn about this from a very young age. i've personally always believed in the integration theory. blue/gray eyes being recessive genes would make them extremely rare, especially in a breeding population where brown and black eyes are the most dominant.

You should look into the Lumbee Indian connection. They have a tradition that the lost colony of Roanoke joined with their people.
I believe that the tribe that got their cheif killed was the croatoan tribe and they went to the settelers and raided their things.And they took the few that were left and held them hostage so the settlers can teach the tribe how to use the tools that they stole. And it was not completly abondoen, the buildings were still there but crops and tools were gone.
They also found a rock that had "Virginia went hence into heaven" written on it. They also found smoke and no fresh water. The livestock were still there and alive, they were all still locked in their pens.

Statements made about the Dare stones in this video are not quite accurate. The 28 Nacoochee Valley stones were found from 85 to 35 years before the NE North Carolina "Dare Stone" found in 1939. Archaeologist Robert Wauchope excavated Eleanor Dare's tomb in the Nacoochee Valley and found another tablet in the tomb. He found another tablet in the base of a large nearby hill, upon which Eleanor's house was built. Wauchope studied a batch of tablets with Elizabethan English on them and urged the owners to take them to nearby Brenau College. Wauchope had a PhD from Harvard and so arranged for the Nacoochee stones to be examined by Harvard scientists. All were found to be authentic. About 12 stones "discovered" later in the Metro Atlanta area were determined to be fakes by scientists from Georgia Tech and Emory University. The real Dare stones state that the seven survivors were headed toward the Native town of Hontaoase. That was a real Creek Indian town in the 1500s and 1600s, but was an unknown word to whites living in Georgia during the 1800s and 1900s.

I think most but not all surviving colonists joined local native tribes. There is spotty evidence of much smaller European settlements towards Croatoan that might suggest a small portion of the original colonists refused to mix with natives and went on their own. Also possible that they were slaughtered and a small handful escaped which is why there are only trace signs of them after Roanoke was abandoned.
This will always be a fascinating debate until the time irrefutable proof is finally discovered
Very interesting. Number 1 makes a lot of the other theories make sense. Maybe it was a combination of all these that caused the colony to slowly thin out and did appear. They probably tried to stay through the drought without supplies but relocated, the attacks may or may not have happened because famine is also a killer, and the few remaining either integrated into other groups or boarded random exploration or war ships. Anyone trying to track one of the few survivors down at the time would never have found anyone left alive even if they searched their entire lives.

Cannibalism is a likely theory, pick off the weakest first until they all perish. Could be that food was scarce due to the colonists and the natives were forced to cannibalism to survive and took them.

Of course they integrated. I don't understand why this is such a mystery, as there have never been any bones or human hair found that match anyone from the Colony. They couldn't have disappeared within three years. Their remains would still be partially there today if they were all slaughtered.

A few points deserve to be made about #5: The Jamestown eyewitnesses that reported seeing Roanoke survivors had received their reports from Native Americans, who *may* have actually encountered Spanish colonists that interacted with tribes in the Appalachia region. Also, when discussing the European characteristics of grey eyes, etc., it is one thing to say it is evidence of interracial genetics, but it is also very difficult to say they were absolutely descendants of lost colonists. Lost Colony was in 1587(ish). Subsequent settlements appeared in modern day NC, including Roanoke, by the late 17th century. Reports of Mixed Euro-Indian peoples in the early 1700's are roughly 100 years after the fact. But I think it is all within the realm of possibilities.

I find this very interesting, anything could have happened, they could have all just up and left, or wiped out by disease, or killed by local tribes. Maybe in the future with further research, we may know someday. It will be something worth finding out.

No remains were found because cannibalism. but they cant kill everyone at once, their meat would spoil so they came as needed. this caused Roanoke to move to Croatian and their rushed vessel to get there failed and they drowned or they were all eaten

Im from VA. Ive been 2 Manteo & saw the play when I was younger & walked the trail. My theory is that due to the drought some died. There was probably a threat from the natives & some were possibly killed. Others especially the women & children were forced to join the natives who moved to another area. Thats probably why theres never been any public records of the English due to their joining with the natives. Think logically. If u were new to an area & had no food or medicine or knowledge how to get it wouldnt u consult with the natives? No proof of cannibalism or alien abduction here ppl...keep it moving lol

I know an individual who swears that they find pottery on their property along the banks of the Neuse River and it is English pottery from that time period. Wooded areas and no history of modern habitation of this particular land along the river. She believes they loaded up and went inland up the Neuse. Who knows,,, could be true. She hasn't proven this to the folks that would need to see it but as of now I can't prove her wrong either.
