Teching stage spikes is so difficult because most of the time you won't expect to be spiked against the stage and even if you do expect it, you could always just air dodge and then die if they don't hit you or spike you
Just press shield 12 frames befire hitting a wall, a ceiling, or floor. DI allows you to slow launch speed (hold down, or wiggle in down). High lauch. speeds are untechable. A harder tech now (post 3.0) is jokers pseudo wave dash, using a gun stall and airdodging into the ground.
Thank you for the specifics, down to the frames! This is the type of stuff I wanted to know. notes to come back to: 0:13 - 11 frames before hitting surface 0:46 - 40 frame cooldown after a tech attempt, so one shot 2:27 - LSI in techs - Hold down to decrease Horizontal speed, may allow 'untechables' to be teched 3:03 - Tech out of a weak hit by airdodging towards stage surface, to wall-jump up, to recovery. 3:50 - extra 3 frames in Ulti
I love how he never mentioned ultimate’s buffering system. On kill screens u get a free tech just by holding shield because kill screens give you more time
Timing feels very forgiving in this smash with the extra frames. I tend to immediately push the stick up to roll towards the stage after teching what would have been an edge spike but hadn't really thought of di to decrease the launch speed an potentially make the difference between surviving and an untechable situation. Good video, man!
Thumbnail is amazing! Villager (of all people) with a smug look of superiority on his face in the middle of teching a stage spike 😆 It's so perfect, you can almost hear him thinking to himself "Yeah, we tech those" 😂
I just wanna say that your videos have been extremely helpful and I really appreciate you putting a prompt in the corner of the screen to show the inputs on a GameCube controller, it makes everything easier to digest. Keep up the great work
That's not actually how it works. The real mechanic is that if you are in the middle of an airdodge towards a surface, you will tech it. So in order to "auto-tech", you need to buffer an airdodge whil in hitstun, then get out of hitstun, and have the time to start your airdodge by the time you hit the wall.
Damn this explanation was so damn perfect for a noob smash player like myself, it was phD level lol. You explained what a tech is so simply and the slow-mo parts of the video helped a lot. Thank you!
not to sound rude but that wasnt amazing at all kind of expected there was nothing else falco could have done he had no double jump he could have up b but it was obvious kirby would punish it so he decided to try and punish kirby with the dash grab but anyone could have seen it coming if you were playing in the match
I remember playing in a smash tournament as ness at my school, I heard of teching but never knew how. So many people asked why I didnt tech a lot of attacks that defeated me. This video will definitely save my stock someday
Wait, really?? That's incredible, I thought for sure the answer would be no, thank you everyone. That makes the difference between tech rolling and tech jumping much smaller so I might remember to do it in time.
Glad to know you can't mash it. Tho I keep finding it harder to tech in this game than in smash 4 for some reason. It frustrates me because everyone says the new buffering mechanics make it easier but all I find is that I press shield before or as I hit the wall or floor, and then nothing.
I just really liked that you can, if close to the ground, you can air-dodge down and tech after, by holding down shield when performing the air dodge. Just another fast way to get back on the ground.
The last Smash game I played was Melee, and that was non competitively. Jesus I've got some catching up to do. Guess it'll be a good thing to learn this, since my main is Mac, and anything helping him get back onstage is a godsend.
ok im just to casual, i kept hearing the word tech and didn't understand so thats how to recover efficiently. I guess its just been to long since I played but watchin this man vids gonna help me alot.
If you guys are still curious then you can just go to training mode. Go to shadow moses island, pick your characters, set cpu to side smash, and let it hit you. You can practice by teching off of the giant pillars
A good stage that comes to mind for practicing teching is normal Shadow Moses, with the walls that break when you hit them, but you can still bounce off of
treygamertv 982 yeah but they updated the game after this video to change it so he can jump after. i dont really remember since its been a year but test it out yourself.
I got a question - how does the "final hit freeze cam" affect your inputs? Like can you input a tech while being in this state, does it mess with your timing, can you alter you DI? Answer would be highly appreciated!
Do not input a tech while in the freeze frame, wait until it ends and immediately tech after. You can also change your DI during the freeze frame, so a lot of times if you get spiked downwards, you can often hold towards the stage which could allow you to tech!
Thank you this helps a lot! 😄 I'm sad that i completely ignored this mechanic before lol but now that I've almost mastered it I'm glad, so thanks a bunch! ^~^
i have very good reaction time and muscle memory for teching, but that skill rarely comes up in competitive sets CASUAL games, however, thats a different story...
My biggest issue and fear is that even at low percents, i'll feel the need to try and tech to prevent getting stage spiked, when in reality I didn't need to and it ends up with me air dodging then falling slowly to my death...I just don't understand how you're supposed to expect within a split second to tech when it's an untelegraphed attack that hits you to bounce you off the side of the stage, yet I've seen pros tech nearly every time when it doesn't seem expected. I hate missing a tech more than anything and then simply air dodging to my death. I don't know how to approach this problem
I always used to call it a reflex when I started off in Melees as the characters in Melee seemed to land on their hands in a handstand position. Didn't know about it was call teching until I started playing online in Smash 3DS.
Let’s all just consider the following: Short Hopping has a window of 3 Frames. Teching has a window of 11 frames. I think it’s funny that, technically, your reflexes have to be approximately 4 times quicker than what is required to instantaneously recover from barreling into a surface at high speed in order to *jump a short distance off the ground*
I think that’s because the jumps in ultimate are so extra. It’s hard to [be quicker than] the rise of them. But I agree. I CANNOT get it down. (Pun intended, I guess.)
Thank you for explaining you cannot tech after mashing the shield button I’ve done this so much in 4 when Gannon grabbed me to get outta it I now know u just gotta time it perfect u get one shot
Wall jump techs (holding away from a wall to automatically perform a wall jump after the tech) do not use up your jump. They count as a wall jump and one can just jump back to the stage afterwards if they've held onto their jump up to this point.
Keeping tap jump on makes it exceedingly more difficult to hold onto your jump in this situation, however, as it often makes you use your jump right after the tech anyway by holding upwards. Proper wall jumps are performed by tapping the direction away from the wall, not upwards.
I think launch speeds that are techable off walls but not on the ground have blue and yellow sparks, and completely techable launch speeds have green sparks.
This was useful because I just heard tech all the time and assumed it was short for technique
So did I!
It does in some cases, it's just context based (like how wavedashing is an advanced tech in melee)
Tech can be both
I had no clue what tech could mean before I saw a Mario maker 1 video
It is, but it's context-sensitive

You can auto tech (buffer a tech) by holding the shield button as you get hit by an attack so you really don’t need to worry about timing
Please test this and tell me if it consistently works because I get it many times but sometimes I don't, even at lower percents!
@@codtrailersq8 would also like to know if this is true
It’s because of the new buffering system
I think it only works if you’re not in hitstun (so you can’t just hold shield to auto tech on walls.

I've always heard about teching and knew what it was, but I was always afraid to ask how to do it.

Does holding up for a tech wall jump work if stick jump is turned off?
For some reason I can neutral tech perfectly but teching to the side doesn't work at all unless I airdodge slightly diagonally

1:02 techjumping doesnt use your jump, unless they changed that recently(?)
