Storyline:-
A fictional account of the real life struggle against the British East India Company. The First War of Independence from British influence in 1857 was a failure, resulting in the end of the Mughal Empire and later annexation of India in the name of Queen Victoria..
Zafar to be taken charge and defended with due traditions by the youngmen of India. The big empire was thus shaken. Sympathisers outlawed, families of the people were put to the plights of bayonets and mercilessly destroyed. This all set the whole country to fire and many lions like "Sagar Singh" came out of their hidings. There were at that time saints too, like Ramdas who was against the violent reactions but had to yield to the circumstances and will of the people. This sacred war took in trail the sacrifices of the Rajput daughter, Lakshmi, Prince Gulab Singh and also the tenderly modelled Kamla who had to pay a heavy cost. The other side too was not so dark, within the ranks of the Britishers there too were men of heart and soul who sympathised the popular cause of the people. Major Taylor and his daughter Helen had a share in serving the mankind. The country was within the reach of the desired goal when there broke out mutiny Barrack pore and Mangal Pandey was put to the gallows to see the First Heros admiring end. This somewhat disheartened the young freedom-fighters and to quote the version of Saint Ramdas the time of or Independence went back to another hundred years. This flight of the Indpendence of our country fought for and by the people of India is written with the bloods of our great sons which will be ever remembered by the sons of India.
The walls of "Lal Quilla" are still narrating the tales and epics of those martyrs and shed tears to their memories..

रफ़ी साहब की आवाज़ में यह गीत आज भी उतना ही लोकप्रिय है , जितना उस जमाने में था। एस.एन.त्रिपाठी जी ने मात्र दो वाद्ययंत्रों का प्रयोग किया है इस गीत में , फिर भी गीत के श्रृंगार में कोई कमी नहीं है , जबकि आज के संगीतकार न जाने कितने Instruments का प्रयोग करते हैं अपने नये गीतों की रचना में। और शब्दों की जितनी बखान की जाय कम ही होगी। कुल मिलाकर आज के गीत इस बेशकीमती गीत के आगे बौने लगते हैं।
शिवनंदन प्रसाद जी ने बिल्कुल सही कहा है।ये गाने सदाबहार है,अमर है ।

This song is based on raag Shivranjani. The perfect choice by SNT to give justice to the lyrics (Kalam - e - Zafar). I (personally) believe that the sadness of the song is more due to the raag Shivranjani. Rafi saab has made it more sad....OMG What a song..and what a singer...!!!
You are spot on. Raag Shivranjani itself is full of pathos and when It is sung by Rafi sahab it becomes even more heart piercing. Another example might be " Rang aur Noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon".

Undoubtedly Rafi Scheb was one of the greatest singer India ever produced.There cannot be any other parallel to Rafi Saheb.

There might be any number of reasons a person doesn't like a particular song. But in general I feel sorry for those who do not or do not want to appreciate songs by Rafi. They do not know what they are missing. Most sad songs by Rafi are not just good to listen, they are phenomenal experience, each one of them.

वाकई नीचे देवेंद्र जी ने जो लिखा है मैं उनसे 100फीसदी इत्तेफाक रखता हूं ।शायद सन 72-73 में जब याद करते हुए रेडियो का ज़माना था इसी तरह की नज़्में गाने ओर कवालीयां ही सुनते थे। बचपन की खास तोर से रफी साहब की मीठी यादें ही हमें फिर से बचपन का अहसास करा जाती हैं।
