Fun facts for Larry’s viewership;
The Office of Sheriff is the oldest non-military law enforcement entity in history, dating back to at least 800 A.D.. The word "sheriff" comes from the English words "reeve" and "shire", which mean "chief or leader" and "hundreds of people banded together", respectively. The "shire-reeve" was responsible for maintaining law and order in the county, which was similar to a shire today.
The first sheriff in America is believed to be Captain William Stone, who was appointed in 1634 for the Shire of Northampton in Virginia. However, the first documented evidence of a sheriff in the United States may be Sheriff James Baldridge of St. Mary's County in 1637.
In the United States, sheriffs are responsible for both criminal law enforcement and civil process. Their duties include traffic enforcement, accident investigation, and serious criminal act investigations. They also collect outstanding taxes, serve court writs, and transport county prisoners to and from court and jail facilities.
In 43 states, sheriffs are elected to four-year terms, but their terms can vary by state. In New Hampshire, they serve two-year terms, in New Jersey they serve three-year terms, and in Massachusetts they serve six-year terms. In Hawaii, Rhode Island, and some other counties, sheriffs are appointed instead of elected.
In many rural areas, especially in the South and West, sheriffs are traditionally considered to be some of the most influential political office-holders in the county. Research also shows that sheriffs have a significant advantage when it comes to incumbency in elections.
