Ueno station was the gateway station to tohoku for 100 years. When tohoku Shinkansen opened they didn’t go to Tokyo station but they all started at Ueno. So I found it a bit weird that you started in Ueno and went to Tokyo and then back through Ueno because a lot of tohoku Shinkansen start in Tokyo then make a stop at Ueno before heading out to Ohmiya, Utsunomiya, Fukushima, Sendai, etc.
Shinkansen is very safe because there is an automatic earthquake detection system(called UrEDAS) and obstacle detection system, which automatically stops before the seismic waves reach. They are fully equipped with the whole Shinkansen system, and it is famous that there have been zero deaths since its opening. have a nice trip😊❤
I've been enjoying the videos in Canada and Argentina lately. But I have to say, seeing a new travel video, like the early days of this channel, just warms my heart. And Japan no less, a country I definitely want to visit.
Yes, you have to try it, bro, the highest fastest train in Southeast Asia... the speed is 350 K kilometers, the newest fast train in Southeast Asia, the first in Indonesia, Jakarta - Bandung, lots of tourist attractions in the city of Bandung which is beautiful and comfortable and cool and cool and beautiful.....
As somebody else commented, Tohoku Shinkansen stops at Ueno Station, so you don't have to spend extra time and money to make a detour and go to Tokyo Station to catch a Tohoku Shinkansen, unless you'd like to enjoy Tokyo Station. There are a lot of shops also in Ueno Station to buy boxed lunch. But, thank you for introducing our Japanese Shinkansen to the world. Tohoku Shinkansen is the fastest, 320km/h. As Hokkaido is so vast, most people living in Hokkaido use cars as in the U.S. to move around. So trains are not usually crowded, and there are few trains to catch in daytime on weekdays except Sapporo and the surrounding areas.
@@samuelandaudrey Hi Audrey and Sam. Please advise if a SIM card is necessary....can we maneuver throughout the country without buying one? Thx! Cheers from Montréal.
@@North-of-the-49th Our plan was to use an eSIM until we got here and realized our phone is too old for that! You can buy SIM cards from vending machines at the airport, but they're also quite pricey. In the end, we downloaded an app called 'Japan WiFi Connect' that we saw advertised on the train ride into Tokyo - it connects you to free WiFi networks all over Japan, so that was helpful but it won't cover you everywhere.

Each one has its own number of tourist attractions, as well as a variety of local dishes, all of which are delicious. It's been a while since I watched a video. I'm glad that both of them are doing well. It was a crazy trip to take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sapporo. Please continue to enjoy Japan.
Every Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen train stops at Ueno Station, it's a bit strange to take the extra ride to Tokyo Station via JR Yamanote Line. Of course, Tokyo Station itself is an attractive shopping mall and you can get train bento from almost everywhere in Japan, the only drawback is restaurants in Tokyo Station didn't start service early. At around 7:30-8p.m., I can only buy foods and drinks from supermarket and bento shops. Although it's slower that local flight from Hanada to Hakodate, the 4.5 hours train ride is much more comfortable. The regional JR Pass helps a lot for travel between Hakodate, Aomori, Akita, Morioka, Sendai and Tokyo in 6 continues days. Of course, for longer trip in Hokkaido, it's more reasonable to buy the local train pass for JR Hokkaido only.
Glad to hear that, Nick! We really enjoy train travel whenever that's an option. It's such a nice way to see the countryside, although admittedly on the bullet train everything is a bit of a blur! 😅
@@samuelandaudrey it sure is! And to see different cities as well! It’s also fun to learn about the history of the railroads and seeing railroad museums like the one you guys did in Germany at the station. One in particular I visited that was my top favorite so far is in Pennsylvania across the street from the Strasburg Railroad. I am hoping at some point to get on one of Amtrak’s cross country routes to see the country. Which trains have been you guys’ top favorites?
The Amtrak would be such a fun way to see the country. We want to do more ViaRail journeys across Canada, especially across the Rockies! As far as favourite train rides, we really enjoyed the Old Patagonian Express out of Esquel (it's a short journey aboard a cool historic narrow gauge train) and also the Tren Patagónico which crosses from the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. Hopefully, there are more train rides on the horizon!

We tried boarding at Ueno, but it turns out our train wasn't stopping there. We took the Hayabusa 7 Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and it only made 4 stops the whole way up to Hakodate.
Good question. With our Hokkaido JR Pass we travelled with both reserved seats and unreserved seats. You can reserve a seat right on the JR ticketing machine - we had to get a staff member to help us do so. You can also reserve seats when you pick up your JR Pass at the ticketing office. There was one leg of the journey where all the reserved seats were fully booked, so we just boarded the unreserved carriages and picked a random seat. It can be a bit confusing to navigate the first few times, so whenever we weren't getting it, we approached the staff at the gates and asked for help.
Beautiful! We were so sad that Covid took out our planned trip to Japan 😭,, This is our first year back traveling! Going to Iceland (9 days) , then over to Scotland (for 3wks). We are leaving in 29 days (not like we are counting 😆) can’t wait to see the rest of your Japan travels 😎
That sounds like an amazing trip! We loved our time in Scotland and Iceland is still on our bucket list. Wishing you guys a wonderful trip. That's less than a month now so the countdown is on!! 😃
Thanks hasta mostrar felices de q estén nuevamente en tokyo y q muestren más videos queremos q bayan al parte Nara please pocos muestran a Japón como realmente es y solo hacen.pocos videos de sus ciudades.thanks.
Yes, you can also pick up your JR Pass for the whole country from the ticket machines. As long as you have a QR code and the station has the right machines with the QR code reader. When I bought my tickets I had a list of cities and stations where I could pick up the tickets, so just make sure you read through all that information and plan accordingly.
Hi Samuel and Audrey, in regard to Klook and booking the Shinkansen. Does the Klook system have allocated tickets from JR East which in affect guarantees seats when they’re released by JR East one month before travel date? Or, is it the convenience of pre booking ahead with them and doing the simple QR code collection at the station as you showed. They mention a possibility that desired departure time can be changed by them due to availability? We’re trying to book a specific departure time but I’m not sure if that’s guaranteed using Klook? I hope you don’t mind my asking this question. We have so appreciated your Japan series and it’s become an invaluable tool for our travel to Japan in June. Cheers👍
So you have two options with Klook: you can either book tickets from point A to point B at your desired time (that's what we did on the ride from Tokyo to Hakodate), or you can get a JR pass (we used the regional one to travel around Hokkaido). When we were using the pass, we found that sometimes there were no reserved seats available, but we managed to get seats in the unreserved carriage. You'll have to weigh your options depending on the time of year you're travelling and also consider how often you'll be catching trains to see if the pass is worth it.
@@samuelandaudrey Hi Guys, I’m impressed that given your number of subscribers, you can find the time to not only answer our question but then do so comprehensively. We’ll go ahead with a Klook A to B booking. Your Japan series continues to answer questions and has been so helpful. I hope one day you visit our country, Australia👍
Welcome to Hokkaido. There's not much to do here, but I hope you enjoy it! As far as I know, we are the first foreign couple to come from Tokyo by Shinkansen!
So you're starting your journey at Ueno station. You'll take a local train to Tokyo station to board the Shinkansen and the first Shinkansen stop is Ueno. All northbound Shinkansen trains on the Tohuku high speed line will make a stop at Ueno. It doesn't make any sense...
We took the Hayabusa 7 Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto which bypassed Ueno and only made stops in Ōmiya, Sendai, Morioka and Shin-Aomori. We did try to board at Ueno until the ticketing agent told us otherwise.
Just looked at the schedule and you are right! There are only four Hayabusa trains a day that won’t make a stop at Ueno. And number 7 is one of them. I took this line quite frequently and I remembered always making a stop at Ueno, but apparently some trains skip the stop at Ueno now.
Can't believe you guys are doing such a similar schedule to the one I'll be doing in a couple of weeks. I'm going to be spending the night at Hakodate as I want to explore the city a bit and head up the mountain to catch the night view. Going to be in Sapporo for 3 days after that so I can't wait to see what you guys do there.
@@samuelandaudrey Ha, I'm doing the opposite, going in April 25, hopefully, I won't be able to do your ferry trip, as Ill be going the opposite way. Thank you so much, your info is incredibly helpful. Definitely want to check out the wasabi farm.
Dear Audrey and Sam, what a fantastic holiday trip!!! I have one important question: Are children (under ten years old) allowed on the Bullet Train? I would like to do "your trip" with my whole family!!!
Most trains do stop at Ueno, but not all of them do. Ours left from Tokyo Station and only made 4 stops the whole way up to Hakodate. We did check with the staff at Ueno before making our way over to Tokyo Station.
Question, doesn’t the Shinkansen stop at JR Ueno after leaving Tokyo Station? Meaning you could get it from Ueno? Or, I’m getting confused? Thanks for any clarification, love your channel👏
Most Shinkansen stop at Ueno, but not all do. We double checked the schedule with staff when we arrived at the station. This particular train only made 4 stops on the whole journey up to Hokkaido.
@@samuelandaudrey Ok, that clearly explains why you left from Tokyo JR Station. I so appreciate your reply and wonder if the Japanese Government would give you a position promoting this fascinating country. It’s because of people like you that were are visiting there in June, thanks again!
@@james7149 Thank you, James! That's very kind of you to say. I'm glad these videos helped inspire your trip to Japan. I'm sure you'll have a great time out there!!
It really varies depending on the time of day you travel, what class, and how direct the train is (some make fewer stops than others). It's best to check the JR website for current pricing.
I didn't know you could book Shinkansen tickets through Klook and just scan a QR code at the station to recieve tickets. I used the ticket machines to reserve our seats and its such a pain when booking with JR Pass. Not hard, just a pain and time consuming... especially when others are waiting to use the machines. I doubt I will ever buy a Japan Rail Pass again especially now that the price has gone up.
Yeah, it was super easy! We just booked everything online back in Canada and then picking up the tickets with the QR code was a breeze. Reserving seats on the machine was tricky just as you said - we had to get staff to help us through the process! 😅 With the latest price increase, one way tickets and regional passes are the way to go.

Ueno is also a Shinkansen station. I wonder if you guys could’ve caught it from Ueno instead.
登録したよ。君らのこれからのツアーを見るのが待ちきれない。
Que se diviertan mucho!!! Saludos desde🇲🇽
Muchas gracias!

Muchas gracias, Lourdes! 😊
If you have luggage, when you get on the city trains, try to use the frontend or backend doors in the carriage instead of the middle doors and wear your backpacks in front of you so when you turn your backpacks don't hit people.
Good to know! We honestly just got on wherever there was space - it wasn't easy navigating during rush hour.
Yes, you have to try it, bro, the highest fastest train in Southeast Asia... the speed is 350 K kilometers, the newest fast train in Southeast Asia, the first in Indonesia, Jakarta - Bandung, lots of tourist attractions in the city of Bandung which is beautiful and comfortable and cool and cool and beautiful....

@ocshaljufrian6109 Japan's new "L.0" series Shinkansen, which is already in use transporting commercial goods, has a top speed of 607 KPH.
From the beginning,if I'm not wrong, you can get shinkansen straight from ueno to shinhakodate.Just FYI
We tried boarding at Ueno, but it turns out our train wasn't stopping there. We took the Hayabusa 7 Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and it only made 4 stops the whole way up to Hakodate.
新幹線には東京まで行かないで、上野から乗った方が混雑しないで楽ですよ?。
Good morning ! Audrey and Samuel . BEAUTIFULL ALL !!!!!. THANKS 🇦🇷😊
Thanks for watching, Viviana!

Question, what about booking seats? Great vlog and plan to save this for reference. Will try app you referred for tickets. Thank you ❤️
Good question.
Saludos!
MUY LINDO !!!!!!
Can we dispense the over all JR pass through the machine too or we need to pick it up at their office?
Yes, you can also pick up your JR Pass for the whole country from the ticket machines. As long as you have a QR code and the station has the right machines with the QR code reader. When I bought my tickets I had a list of cities and stations where I could pick up the tickets, so just make sure you read through all that information and plan accordingly.
Hola chicos mirandole por este canal .
i bought the ticket..going to take the train too..❤
I love Hokkaido best way now to save money fly or take bus to Aomori then ferry
Not first couple loads of couples now coming to Hokkaido getting very popular hope not to busy I love less tourists
I will never go to Japan so it’s great to travel with you again.
We're happy to share a taste of Japan. We hope you enjoy the upcoming videos, Santiago!
You can actually take a Shinkansen train from Ueno Station; all Hokkaido Shinkansen trains make a stop at Ueno.😉
That green train ought to be called el nari gon
😂😂😂
What kind of carry on luggage do you use?
We travelled with checked luggage on this trip. The only thing we carried on were our camera bags - a Lowepro and a Wandrd.
@@samuelandaudrey thanks for the quick reply. What brand?
東京駅から新幹線で5時間ぐらいですか?
秋田県まで行った時は4時間ぐらいでした。
"green" is business class
gran class is first class
correction, klook is not _the_ official JR Pass seller
Nice! I hope the upcoming videos from Hakodate and Sapporo offer some helpful tips. Enjoy your upcoming trip!! 😊
You were at Ueno Station at first.
There is also a Shinkansen platform at Ueno Station.
Why didn't you take the Shinkansen from Ueno Station?
Most trains do stop at Ueno, but not all of them do. Ours left from Tokyo Station and only made 4 stops the whole way up to Hakodate. We did check with the staff at Ueno before making our way over to Tokyo Station.
@@samuelandaudrey
Thank you for reply.
I see. That's what it was.
You really got on the fastest "Hayabusa".
Are the barbers on strike in Japan? 😊
Yea, really! He looks so goofy!
ヌードビツには笑ったね。登別のことだった!
Niceeeee 😮
How much is the train ticket from Tokyo Station to Hokkaido?
日本一速く走る新幹線だけど、逆に新幹線で日本一遅く走る区間の有る新幹線でも有るよね❗🤭その区間とは住宅街を通る時と青函トンネルを走る時ですね‼️
