I like to believe this song is about being alone at home and in love with someone inside your head. An obsession that you can't fulfill outside your imagination, a desire strong enough to drive you to the point of seclusion. Something to keep your urges in check but not enough to make you feel less lonely.
The lyrics make perfect sense in this instance.

It's extremely difficult to find anyone worth it in anywhere. Especially when you feel like investing so much effort and time in something can go out the window no matter what you thought and wanted in the beginning.
But still you could be surprised positively, I guess. Just don't get stuck between 4 walls.
