Synopsis: Malaysia's government is unashamedly mixing business with politics. It is a combination which seems a recipe for success. For 37 years massive economic growth has proved a persuasive combination for voters and the ruling Malaysian coalition party UMNO. 'Malaysia Incorporated', as politicians proudly call the country, encourages close business ties with the government, leading to UMNO control in almost all aspects of the Malaysian economy, from the media to construction. The only losers are those outside the ruling party. Everything is geared to benefit ethnic Malays and party members; to get a government contract, or even a university scholarship, having party membership is a must. Strict rules are enforced to keep the order; political rallies are illegal, and speaking out about the government's discrimination against Indian and Chinese minorities can lead to a spell in jail. ABC Australia speaks to ministers, experts, and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, to uncover the scope of influence that UMNO wields.

Wow, how things have changed dramatically 24 years later, in 2018! UMNO was good for Malaysia from its independence until around 2009 when Najib Razak became PM. It was downhill for UMNO from there.

Muhammad Alfatih I’m not sure where you’ve been getting your information from but I’m assuming that either you’re not a Malaysian or a PPBM supporter because to say that Mahathir devoted his life for the people is a deluded statement to be honest.
Mahathir is nothing but the epitome of corruption and greed itself. This man has single-handedly plagued the nation when he was the leader of UMNO for a mind numbing 22 years. Under his regime, he was an authoritarian who silenced and imprisoned his opponents who are ironically working under him now. He terminated a lot of people even Malaysia’s founding father Tunku Abdul Rahman just for him to get into power.
Under his rule, Mahathir promoted plutocracy, racial politics, crony capitalism and tyrannical leadership. Mahathir has endorsed and trained corrupted politicians such as the infamously acclaimed kleptocrat Najib Razak as his own protégé back when he was president of UMNO. Didn’t you know that Najib was his Youth Chief back when Mahathir was the President of UMNO ?
To make matters worse, this senile old man was re-elected as the current PM making him the oldest head of state in the world. As of now, PH has done shit all for this country. Our economy is heading for a recession, unemployment continues to soar, political conflict is on the rise and this is all happening again under Tun Dr Mahathir.
So tell me, how is this doing any good for the rakyat ?
