  • There's a reason why we are calling this episode as "Ground Zeroth" and not the first. We are contemplating to start this humble musical inititative for quite a while and two golden years passed in between without any action due to covid as there were restrictions to assemble especially for jamming and also as the studios were shut down. Covid hasn't completly gone, however we need to start somewhere without dampening our spirits. The whole connotation is captured well in the term "Ground Zero" hence the name of the episode. Beware that this episode was shot when the Covid reatrictions were at the peak during the third wave hence it's shot in home setup than a professional studio setup. We wish to emphasie on the quality of the "core content" than the means surrounding it. You shall see the upcoming episodes shot in studio setup with pro accompaniests team of ours. However said that, this is the epiaode that truly marks the start of Khyaal Khayaal, our dream project.
Editing is done by Yogesh Tadwalkar, a dear buddy based in Singapore who is overseeing this effort through his super artistic lens. He brings his midas touch to everything !
In this episode we decided to tell you a story of a composition by a legendary music director RD Burman. It's about a song from a movie "Amar Prem" in which he used not just two distinct but rather two extreme raagas, so far as their mood / flavour is concerned. These are raag Todi and raag Khamaaj. one is serious and intense (Todi) whereas the other is soft and delicate (Khamaaj). Only a brilliant mind like Pancham da could think, imagine and do this. This also stands as one of the creative most experiments in light music which at core was inspired by hindustani classical foundation.
Since this is a new format of storytelling for the most, we thought of giving the breakup of the episode for everyone to understand better.
Here're the highlights you may focus on :
0.00 to 2.15 : Start with a short bandish in raag Todi : "Ja ja re pathakawa" composed by Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
2.16 to 3.51 : Brief intro of Raag Todi, its mood / flavour and how it affects our senses.
3.52 to 6.30 : Short traditional bandish in Raag Khamaj : "Kaun gali gayo shaam" followed by a brief intro about Raag Khamaj, its mood / flavour and how it affects our senses. Emphasis is on how different these two raagas (Todi & Khamaaj) are and how differently they affect our mood.
6.31 to 8.01 : Reason for dealing with two ragas with such extremely different moods or flavours in one episode : introduction to RD Burman's composition from the movie "Amar Prem" in which he has composed a mukhda in raag Todi and antara in raag Khamaj in single song. He has managed to not sound it odd with a transformational line "Nindiya na aaye" that takes us swiftly from raag Todi to raag Khamaj.
8.02 to 8.10 : Illustrating and decoding "Raina biti jaye" from movie "Amar Prem", explaining the raag Todi to raag Khamaj transfornation. Experiencing the genius of RD Burman's imagination and composing ability.
    8.11 to 13.15 : Concluding the episode.
Happy watching, leave your valuable comments, bless us with your likes and shares.
P.S : Although the diacussion is in Marathi, it being a musical video covering Hindi Bandishes and a Hindi song, shouldn't be that difficult to understand. We are working on including the subtitles soon.

Superb Ganesh learnt something very new and felt that composers have such a tedious task when compose. Till now I thought it was mostly some great tune and then the nine yards but looks like it is very refined process. Thanks a lot, you should make such unraveling episodes too...
