- A few weeks back, I spent a week at one of Mexico’s most famous rights. It’s an incredible wave, but a break that comes with an intense crowd. This video gives you a quick insight into what to expect…

I've surfed this wave a few times before. Don't underestimate the rip. It's so strong. Literally, a lazy river that just sweeps you down the coast in a matter of seconds. If you jump in at the wrong time you are already like 100 yards down the beach. A fun wave to surf for sure but dan is right, you are never not just sitting waiting for a wave. You are paddling the entire time trying to maintain position.
I was there over twenty years ago. Three friends together, endless waves and no crowds. We got invited by the locals to attend a school graduation ceremony and have dinner. The people were so friendly and happy to have us there.
Sadly I went back recently and paradise is truly lost. Guess it’s just the way of the world.
If you go go there, try to learn the language and get to know the wonderful people of the area.
Fueron momentos que quedarán conmigo para siempre y ahora desde Irlanda me llenan de felicidad y un atisbo de tristeza por lo perdido.
Very different now. American influence to.
@@geraldkelleher5514 precisely,, and the points further south have a ever-growing strict pay to play reality. Because of traveling slash paying Western surfers like most people in the comment section
@@NadiKyle All of the points south are overcrowded too. There has also been a drastic increase in the last 4-5 years
@@petep5003 Yes exactly I noticed hordes of surfers with their 100-plus dollars a day surf guides crowding out all the points while the surf guides attempted to kick out anyone who was not paying. The trend is spreading. Barra is safe for now but the crowds have doubled or tripled post COVID
You’re a good surfer!🏄♂️ Looks like fun!🤙
Thanks mate!!
Great episode - and superb surfing - the wave really suits your style! 😎👌🌴
Thank you!!
I love ❤️ this video information and clip
I highly recommend Dan's book especially if you have been watching these types of videos from Dan The Man Thanks for sharing as always my friend Be well and Safe travels 👍🤙🏻
Yo mate!! Thanks Michael... stoked you loved it :))
Nice!
Thanks!
Some real surf journalism would be awesome and perhaps if you pointed the camera at the " surf guides" of Southern Oaxaca. The ones that have privatized access to many waves in that region. None of that money goes into the local community but just into their pockets alone. But there are thousands of wealthy surfers just lining up to pass over their money for exclusive access to sandy right hand points. Surfing has become a elite sport for the wealthy.
ha ha, an elite sport for the wealthy. Sure bud.😅
He’s not an investigative journalist, just a surf UA-camr mate, relax
Plus, out of all places you wanna do that, Mexico is probably not one of them
@@xwhite2020 why don't you go try and surf those points without paying 100 plus dollars a day and then tell me how that goes
@@BeatingStandards another honky afraid of Mexico I see, down there about as chills it gets except for the surf guides. When you're touching upon the social aspects of surfing such as crowds your doing some form of journalism
In addition to all that anytime you point a camera at a limited resource like peeling right hand points you're going to increase the amount of traffic in that area no matter what. That has long lasting effects. I surfed barra 10 years ago and believe me the changes are significant
Can you make a surf guide on Puerto Escondido?
Nice Dan! Have the locals chilled a bit? Or same as always?
Hey mate! I mean, they get their waves for sure, and there'd be trouble if you started burning snaking crew out there! I didn't really look at a wave if there was a local paddling for it!
What month did you go down there? Do you know if the major crowds thin out in like September after summer?
Shredding mate ..Looks a rad spot... are you going to Zicatela ?
Ripping Dan-o !
hey do you think you could make a video like this about bali.thx
Great video mate. I love following your adventures.
Ripping this break! Thank you for such sick videos!
Thanks mate!!
Hey Dan, how’s it going mate? Could you make a surf vídeo about surf in Norway? Aloha 🤙🏻
On the list for sure!! Just need some cold water stuff hahah!!
You were there for Agatha?
Feel like I probably met you and don't even know it...😂
Love your vids bro, epic👌
Because of the crowdedness I once saw a couple of people trying to surf here at night with head torches on. It didn’t go well. I feel this wave isn’t worth the crowd. Bless to all
Mental!! Yeah I mean, it's an amazing wave, but the battle is definitely stressful!!
@@DanHarmon123 shoot boys it was already like that when I was there 15 years ago SMH ... can't even imagine now LOL
Awesome wave, you looked pretty exhausted after some waves. I think another 3 ft on that it would be cooking.
Yeah had some leg burners haha!! For sure, had some better days out there where it was bigger, but I ran out of $$ for filming haha 😂😂
Why are you posting all this online?
yeawwww, oh man, I have to come back soon, que viva barra!!!
ok you actually rip, was not expecting that
🤙🤙🤙
Shred dog
Yes, you surfed it well. Not getting ahead of yourself on the turns. Timing has Improved for sure
Most days I’m in that sharky mindset, but sometimes I’d rather surf closeouts by myself.
Hahha same!!
Rippin Dan!💪
Thanks mate!!
What ? $5,00 to get in the Beach everyday 🤑
Your cutbacks are good. Try a two stage bottom turn and dont over rotate for fast vertical approach. Start doing long floaters.
But yeah, you got those sideways turns dialed. Excellent surfing.
I surf pretty similar to him and to be honest I was secretly trying to analyze and came up with exactly what you said about the bottom turn.. I'll have to work on that too!
Instead of two stage bottom turn another way is to try a deeper bottom turn where you start it facing more direct to the beach and lay it down deeper more like a water ski turn which enables you to come up the face more vertical like going up the transition on a half pipe. Checkout slaters bottom turns
@@headmondronary2127 Yep totally i tried that today in the water in fact... what exactly is a two stage bottom turn? I'm sure I know what it is by looking at it but not sure how its described in words.
Are locals paying this beach entry fee?
Probably not. But whatever, the locals don’t have the cash to jump on a plane and fly half way around the world to visit either. Here in Abu Dhabi they charge $30 to visit the beach for a day and there’s no surf at all. Don’t get me started on Sumba, Indonesia. Sad to say surfing has become a rich man’s sport, like it or love it. Having said that, there’s still plenty of free waves out there, so no need to panic.
@@gallivantstravels I think surf should be a rich man’s sport because of the crowd factor. But if I’m paying for it and locals are entering for free and getting the best waves, well that’s against common sense I guess 😅
I'm not sure on that one actually!!
A rich man's sport... I've been poor all my life and surfed regularly.
They don't, they own the beach and they are the ones charging. The money goes to fund the town's infrastructure and services.
Why Mexican? RUN!
I found in Peru that some would love to snake and drop in on gringos or anyone for that matter but they always seemed to be kooks. I think they were people with more financial status who tend to run with a lot of ego rather than skill. The decent surfer's there had a better attitude
who in their right mind would fly half way round the world spend all that money to surf a crowded mediocre wave in the middle of nowhere and he didnt mention the very real possibility of getting shot through the head like a dog and dumped in a hole, pfftt
